“Movement

~ Moshe Feldenkrais

The modern life is a stationary one; crunching numbers on a spreadsheets in an office, with very little exercise (partly due to other commitments, partly due to time constraints, partly due to “just because”). And so, on a Monday evening I found myself taking part in an online Feldenkrais class, called “Awareness Through Movement (“ATM”).

When Martina phoned to discuss my attendance, I was not sure what to expect; never having heard of the “Feldenkrais Method” or “Awareness Through Movement” before. In my ignorance, I expected a yoga-type experience.

Awareness Through MovementFeldenkrais Method

After an hour long session with Martina, fully focussed on learning to move slowly and deliberate, I understood what it meant when someone says they feel light and free. Having, temporarily at least, released the tension in my back and shoulders, my spine felt straight for the first time, ever.

Similar to Tai Chi or gentle yoga, Awareness Through Movement classes use slow, mindful movements to achieve powerful effects in terms of strength, flexibility, and holistic integration of body and mind.

The Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education can help deepen the connection between mind and body. With better movement, you feel centered, grounded and present, even in emotionally demanding situations. With better sensation, you have better access to your body's intuition and wisdom; develop a mindfulness practice that is completely integrated with your life. Learning through movement is the essence of the Feldenkrais Method.

Martina taught dancing for over 30 years. Being a teacher of movement, fitness was and remains a high priority for her. Even then, Martina was aware of her body, aware of her movement and thought she was in tune with her body - a typical ideal for a dance teacher. On the outside, she appeared to be a self-conscious, modern woman, yet, after 30 years, she became weary and felt no longer in tune with herself.

Especially in the modern life, being with yourself in silence may seem daunting for many. This was also the case with Martina. Throughout her training, she got to know herself even better and has found an immense calmness and internal peace. Method is practiced mainly wile lying down. It makes use of brain plasticity to improve your ability to move. The goal is not so much to change the strength of your muscles, but to change how your muscles are controlled by your brain. In this way, becoming aware of your movement and your body can improve posture and balance, assist in mindfulness, movement practices, movement difficulties, healthy aging, and has shown positive results on babies, children, athletes and Usingperformers.thismethod,

Group classes are referred to as “Awareness through movement” (ATM) classes, and work on verbal cues. One-on-one sessions are called “Functional Integration” (FI). FI is the study of how brain regions work together to process Windhoek 2022

A Feldenkrais Practitioner will gently facilitate many variations of a movement with the aim of clarifying your brain’s body maps, improving motor control and increasing flexibility. In doing so, your practitioner will assist you to find easier, better ways of doing things like walking, rolling over, standing, and breathing. The gentle movements and precise touch used in the Feldenkrais Method will give you a unique sense of safety and support. An easy experience of movement will help you to relax and find a way to enjoy your body again.

Though functional integration frequently relies on anatomic knowledge of the connections between brain areas, the emphasis is on how large clusters of neurons fire together under various stimuli. The stimulation is brought on by the hands of the Feldenkrais practitioner in one-on-one sessions. They aid in the detection of subconsciously tense ares and bring awareness to these.

Page 10 Elephant stew If you are looking to feed a crowd, then this is the perfect recipe for you! This Elephant Stew couldn’t be easier! The best part is, it easily feeds 2,480 people! And, if for some weird reason you should need to feed more than 2,480 people, it even has an option how to make it stretch farther! Aren’t you glad we’ve got your back like that?! Ingredients • 1 medium elephant • 100kg tomatoes • 1 wheelbarrow (heaped) onions • 50kg carrots • 6 tons potatoes • 100kg salt • 30kg black pepper • 20ltr Chutney • Water • 2 rabbits - optionalDisclaimer : harmedwereelephantsNo recipe!thisofmakingthein up!Eatup!Eat The Windhoek Connection, 6 September 2022 1. Slice the elephant into bite size pieces. This takes a about 4-6 weeks, so it is best to ask friends and family to help. 2. Peel onions (better use a gas mask when you do this), carrots and potatoes. 3. Shovel onions, carrots, potatoes and tomatoes into a large pot. (A 4020 John Deere with front scoop works really well and is much quicker than doing by hand.) 4. Cover meat with vegetables, Chutney and water. 5. Add salt and pepper. 6. Cook over kerosene fire for 4 weeks at 240°C. Stir regularly and add water as needed. 7. Turn down the heat and allow to simmer for the final 24 hours. 8. This will serve 2,480 people. If you expect more for the meal, add the 2 rabbits. Do this only if necessary as most people do not like to find hare in their stew, Method
