Welcome to the University for Children

Why is the sky blue?

Why do streets get potholes?

How come ants don’t hurt themselves when falling from heights?

How do blind people read and write?

Children have many questions.

This was basis the digital Kinder University of the Goethe Institute was built on - to help children find answers to the phenomena of the world and encouraging them to think creatively.

The Windhoek Connection

The Goethe Institute was founded by the Federal Republic of Germany, to promote the German culture and language worldwide. It offers language classes, promotes the german culture and encourages international cultural exchange.

The German Digital Kinder University, which is a FREE educational online platform for children aged 8-12 years, has been developed with children’s requirements and interests in mind. The project stimulates young students’ curiosity, and is designed to make the learning process enjoyable, is it takes the form of a game, with content children find entertaining. After spending 6-10 minutes attending an interactive class, the child gains access to various tasks.

These tasks are not just based on the material in the lesson, but prompt the child to make their own causal connections, draw analogies and think creatively.

It is a supplement to, not a replacement for, lessons in school. One of the goals of the Digital University is to demonstrate that everything that happens in our dayto-day lives, no matter how ordinary, has a fascinating scientific explanation to it. The project helps young students develop their views of the world. It helps them to see it through a new lens and supports the understanding of how theoretical knowledge can be used in practice.

Using modern technology, which most children aged 8-12 are already familiar with (primarily for gaming), this facility develops media literacy in a more sophisticated way, providing them with skills that will be useful to them in the future.

Childhood is the best time to learn a foreign language. Knowing more than one language is a benefit in today’s world and for the purpose of scientific communication, German is the second most important language, after english.

The dean of the KinderUni is the brilliant, but sometimes scatterbrained, Professor Einstein. His research associate is Sophie Schlau. They are assisted by Professor Einstein’s beloved invention, JoWo (or JoWoGo), named after Johan Wolfgang von Goethe. The field investigator, Christoph, who originated from the german childhood favorite show “Die Sendung mit der Maus” is also a presenter at the KinderUni.

Through this program, students level up through the ranks, starting as a student and can graduate as a professor. Three faculties are available: “Humankind”, “Nature”, and “Technology”. Each faculty has 25 lectures.

The faculty “Humankind” covers subjects such as medicine, foreign cultures, food, art and sport. The faculty “Nature” deals with plants and animals. The “Technology” faculty focuses on the study of how different devices work.

Getting started is easy: visit kinderuni.goethe.de and create a new account. You can sign up as a student, parent or teacher. While the topic may be the same, teachers and parents have

Home made Cream Cheese

This homemade Cream Cheese recipe could not be easier to make, because everything you need to make rich, creamy, and tangy cream cheese is most likely already in your fridge.

Ingredients

• 1000ml whole milk (not low fat)

• 2-3 tablespoons lemon juice (lime juice or white vinegar)

• 1/4 teaspoon salt (add more if desired)

Method

• In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, heat the milk on med-high. Stirring constantly until it starts to a rolling simmer.

• Reduce the heat to medium. Add the lemon juice 1 tablespoon at a time, in 1-minute intervals. Continue stirring constantly.

• Continue cooking until the mixture curdles. Stir constantly till the mixture has separated completely, this should take just a few minutes. There will be a green liquid on the bottom and thick curdles on top. Remove from the heat. This should happen within a few minutes.

• Lay a sieve with cheesecloth over a large bowl. Pour the curd mixture into the sieve. Let it strain and cool for about 15 minutes.

• Transfer curds to a food processor and process until curds have come together and are totally smooth and creamy. It will take around 3-4 minutes. Keep going if your cream cheese is grainy.

• Add salt and taste. Add more if you want more flavor. Now is also a good time to add herbs, garlic or any other flavors you like.

• This cream cheese must be stored in the fridge. I always use it within 7 days but can last as long as up to 2 weeks.

Octoberitis: Any medical term ending in “itis” refers to an inflammation in certain places. In this instance, it refers to the inflammation of the last quarter of the year. Its symptoms include irritability, fatigue, a heightened sweet tooth, spontaneous appearance of Christmas decoration and carols. It is usually associated with the term “I’m SO over this year!”.

There is no instant cure for it, and the pressure to get things done is moving towards its peak. All we long for is to go on that well-deserved year-end holiday. But there are certain things we can do to alleviate some of the symptoms. Drink plenty of water, get enough rest and take the occasional walk to rid the biggest frustrations. Chocolate helps, too.

The most important thing, however, is your outlook in life. Remember to look on the bright side.

The below is part of a drive called “Action for Happiness” and I hope it bring you the much needed woema to make it through the last part of this year.

Tuesday, 4 October Wednesday, 5 October Thursday, 6 October

Start your day with the most important thing on your to-do list.

Be a realistic optimist. See life as it is, but focus on what is good.

Remind yourself that things can change for the better.

Friday, 7 October Saturday, 8 October Sunday, 9 October

Look for the good in people around you today.

Make some progress on a project or task you have been avoiding.

Octoberitis Octoberitis

Share an important goal with someone you trust.

Monday, 10 October

Take time to reflect on what you have accomplished recently.
