Wanda, a young mother from Namibia, fights rare tumor in her head

In 2019 Wanda was diagnosed with low-grade chondrosarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer, located in her sinus. Together we can support this young mother and her little family to eliminate her fear of not seeing her child growing up. Unfortunately, health cannot be bought, but with your help, we have a real chance of helping Wanda and giving her back her quality of life.

Why we need YOUR help...

Dearest friends, family, and valuable community,

I sincerely plead for your support. I have a tumor in my paranasal sinus, to be precise, a low-grade chondrosarcoma*. Although several operations were done, the last in Cape Town in July 2022, the tumor grew back and now presses on my optic nerve. This is not only a life-threatening tumor disease due to brainstem compression by further tumor growth, but its location between the optic nerve and the internal carotid artery also makes

MRI of 26.10.2022: Tumor between the right optic nerve and internal carotid artery. Wanda, a young mother from Namibia, fights rare tumor in her head
*Chondrosarcoma is a rare type of cancer that usually begins in the bones, but can sometimes occur in the soft tissue near bones. Chondrosarcoma, the most malignant cartilaginous tumor, constitutes only 4% of non-epithelial tumors of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx, making it one of the rarest malignancies.

another operation extremely risky.

Therefore, I need urgent radiation treatment, but due to its difficult position, normal radiation therapy would have negative side effects, harming healthy tissue and could damage both my eye nerves - causing blindness in the worst case.

As I have a little son, and nobody wants to be blind by choice nor take the risk of other negative side effects, I agreed to a proton radiation treatment at the West German Proton Therapy Centre in Essen, Germany, although the price for the proton therapy is significantly higher than the photon radiation which could have been done in South Africa as well. The therapy will last up to 8 weeks, and although we are in talks with our medical insurance, they might not or only partially cover the estimated costs of EUR 70,000.00, which I cannot afford on my own.

For the last 4 years, this illness has placed me and my husband under enormous strain – emotionally, and financially and struggling to cope with the severity of the tumor and the effect on my mental and physical health. My son is only 22 months old and my biggest wish is to see him grow up. I ask for your help from the bottom of my heart. With you, I can draw the line under this topic and get rid of the tumor once and for all. And doing this without risking more than the necessary side effects from the radiation treatment, gaining back normality and quality of life for me and my family again. Thank you!

“The Breath of the World. Johann Wolfgang Goethe and the Experience of Nature”, Wednesday, 1 Feb · 7 – 9 PM

Goethe Institut and Namibia Scientific Society invite to a public talk by Stefan Bollmann:

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is still known today primarily for his literary work—less attention is paid to his involvement with natural research. In “The Breath of the World. Johann Wolfgang Goethe and the Experience of Nature”, Stefan Bollmann takes us on a journey through Italy, Switzerland and as far as the Harz Mountains, alongside the naturalist Goethe. Based on his observations of nature and anatomical examinations, Stefan Bollmann shows us what lessons and inspiration we can still draw today from Goethe’s sensually vivid perception of nature. Stefan Bollmann is a German lecturer and author.

Art Exhibition: Side By Side: Namafu Amutse And Candice Mouton, Friday, 3 Feb · 7:30 – 10 Pm

This exhibition is the first in the 2023 Side by Side exhibition series curated by StArt Art Gallery. The premise of the Side by Side exhibition series is juxtaposition. By placing just two artists’ works in proximity, we are presented with a dialogue that creates space for unique interpretations. This exhibition will present artworks by Namafu Amutse and Candice Mouton who met while at school. They are both young, self taught artists in the early stages of their creative careers. While Amutse works predominantly in the digital realm, creating photographs and videos, Mouton is a painter and illustrator. Despite using very different mediums, the two artists share a similar impetus for their works on display in this show. In this exhibition, Amutse’s photographs and Mouton’s paintings portray intimate moments relating to childhood through portraiture. All are welcome to attend the exhibition opening and art talk. Entrance is free.
