Achoo! Gesundheit.

2 August 2022 Issue 25/2022

You know it’s coming; you feel the tickle, your eyes start to water, your nose wrinkles up, and then it happens… ah-choo!! You sneeze! Whether it’s an allergic reaction, a viral infection, a change in temperature or a sudden bright light, your nose becomes agitated. When this happens, your body does what it needs to do to get rid of the pesky irritant — it causes you to sneeze, also known as sternutation. Sneezing is an important part of the immune process, helping to keep us healthy and sniffle-free. It protects your body by clearing the nose of bacteria and viruses.

When something enters your nose or you encounter a trigger that sets off your "sneeze center" in your brain, located in the lower brain stem, signals are rapidly sent to tightly close your throat, eyes, and mouth. Next, your chest muscles vigorously contract, and then your throat muscles quickly relax. As result, air along with saliva and mucus - is forced out of your mouth and nose. Voila, you've sneezed.

Deaf people don't make the "achoo!" sound when they sneeze, while hearing people seem to do it all the time. Nor is "achoo" universal - it's what Englishspeaking sneezers say. The French sneeze "atchoum". In Japan, it's "hakashun" and in the Philippines, they say "ha-ching". Inserting words into sneezes - and our responses such as "bless you" - are cultural habits we pick up along the way. So it's not surprising that deaf people, particularly users of sign language, don't think to add the English word "achoo" to this most natural of actions. An achoo-free deaf sneeze sounds like: There is a heavy breath as the deep presneeze breath is taken, then a sharper, faster sound of air being released. For deaf people, a sneeze is what it should be: something that just happens.

Sneezing is a mechanism your body uses to clear the nose. When foreign matter such as dirt, pollen, smoke, or dust enters the nostrils, the nose may become irritated or tickled. When this happens, your body does what it needs to do to clear the nose — it causes a sneeze. A sneeze is one of your body’s first defenses against invading bacteria and bugs.

Why are sneezes so powerful? It’s all about pressure. When you sneeze, your body produces pressure in your respiratory system. This includes your sinuses, nasal cavity, and down the throat into your lungs.

In a 2016 study, scientists measured a pressure level of 1 pound-force per square inch (1 psi) in the windpipe of a woman who was sneezing. When a person is exhaling hard during strenuous activity, they have a windpipe pressure that’s much less, only about 0.03 psi.

?

Holding in a sneeze greatly increases pressure inside the respiratory system to a level of about 5 to 24 times that caused by the sneeze itself. Experts say holding this additional pressure inside your body can cause potential injuries, which can be serious. The best way to avoid sneezing is to treat the triggers, i.e. allergies, bright light, smoke.

Most of us realise there are cultural differences in language, dress and greetings across the globe. Did you know not everyone sneezes like you do? The sound you make when you sneeze and how the sneeze is responded to is a cultural matter! Sneezing is generally accepted in some countries, and a social error in others. In France, for example, sneezing is seen as an embarrassing act that no one wants to draw attention to by responding. In other countries, it is considered very polite to respond to a person’s sneeze. And responses may vary depending on the number of times a person sneezes in a row!

A sneeze begins with a sudden inhalation. This is the ‘Aaah’ part of the sneeze. The ‘Choo!’ occurs on the exhale because most of the muscles in your body are reflexively contracting. This clamps your mouth shut until the pressure in your lungs rises too high and the air escapes in a burst. Since your tongue is pressing against the roof of your mouth, the air makes a ‘ch’ sound, and with your lips pursed, it emerges as an ‘oo’. Here’s how to sneeze in 10 different countries, along with their culturally appropriate response: 1. Greece Sneeze: “Apshoo!” Response: “Giasou” (Health) or “Gitses” (May God bless you)

9. United States Sneeze: “Achoo!” Response: “Bless you” 10. Italy Sneeze: “Etchiu!” Response: “Salute” (Health) or “Salve” (Cheers)

2. France Sneeze: “Atchoum“ Response: “À tes souhaits” (At your wishes) 3. Russia Sneeze: “Apchkhi!” Response: “Bud’ zdoróv” (Be healthy) 4. China Sneeze: “Han-chee!” Response: “Bu hăo yì si” (I’m sorry) 5. Japan Sneeze: “Hakushon!” Response: “Homerare” (May you be praised) 6. Argentina Sneeze: “Achis!” Response: “Salud” (Health) 7. Spain Sneeze: “Achis!” Response: “Jesús” (Jesus) 8. Germany Sneeze: “Hatschi!” Response: “Geshundheit” (Good health) Page 6

Liver Bread - for your dogs! Source: Windhoek Dog Club

Liver bread is a great treat for your dog. It is very easy to make and most of the dogs just love it and do a lot to get it. It is also easy to handle and you can choose the size of the piece you use according to the reward you need (just break of the piece you want to use). In fact even cats love it. Ingredients: • 500g chicken liver (puréed for example in a kitchen mixer) • 1-2 eggs • 1 kg flour (optional: you can replace about 250g flour with Tapioka flour (sweetpotato flour), then you will get a more rubbery texture and you can cut the pieces much smaller and they will not scramble in your pocket – very helpful especially for small dogs) • 1-2 tablespoons baking powder (depending if you prefer the liver bread softer or harder) • about 500 ml water Directions: Mix all the ingredients together. Add water to get it soft enough to spread it easily on a baking tin covered with baking paper. Bake it at 180°C for about 20-30 minutes. It is useful to cut the warm liverbread into cubes of about 3x3cm (optional 0,5 x 0,5cm with tapioca flour), put them in a plastic bag and freeze it. When needed just take out as many pieces as you like, they will defrost very fast. You can cut or break the larger pieces into the required size. ur
