decision to source & buy locally produced products first. Not only does local consumption of local products help boost our economy, it also encourages local producers to develop their products to meet the growing expectations of discerning customers for even better quality products.

We believe that this paradigm shift is already taking place. When Namibians think @NamibiaFirst, we collectively turn the current financial recession around much quicker.

As part of their ethos, The Made in Namibia Collection looks to partner with local manufacturers, artists, seamstresses and artisans that endeavour to support other local businesses through their packaging, branding, printing and other means.

Happy, Thank you, more please!

While Thanksgiving is not celebrated in Namibia, the idea of spending the day with loved ones, sharing what we are most thankful for has always intreagued me.

This all began way back when, in 1827, when the noted magazine editor and prolific writer Sarah Josepha Hale —author, among countless other things, of the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb”—launched a campaign to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday.

Thanksgiving was observed by many, yet, it was never proclaimed an official holiday.

For 36 years, she published numerous editorials and sent scores of letters to governors, senators, presidents and other politicians, earning her the nickname the “Mother of Thanksgiving.”

Abraham Lincoln finally heeded her request in 1863, at the height of the Civil War, in a proclamation entreating all Americans to ask God to “commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife” and to “heal the wounds of the nation.”

Page 4 The Windhoek Connection, 22 November 2022

He scheduled Thanksgiving for the final Thursday in November, and it was celebrated on that day every year until 1939, when Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the holiday up a week in an attempt to spur retail sales during the Great Depression. Roosevelt’s plan, known derisively as Franksgiving, was met with passionate opposition, and in 1941 the president reluctantly signed a bill making Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November.

• chakra balancing - using primordial mantras & yoga poses (optional);

• Deep relaxation with various instruments;

• ‘Finding Truth' guided meditation.

N$300 - N$350, or as you can.

RSVP: Jani +27 79 066 4577 (WhatsApp).

By allowing yourself to fall into a state of relaxation through sound bathing, your body enters a repair mode, similar to sleep, that allows the endocrine system to restore hormonal and chemical balance — with which stress can interfere with.

Thanksgiving, being celebrated on a Thursday, is immediately followed up with Black Friday and Cyber Monday after that. These holidays signal the official start of the Christmas season, reminding everyone of the upcoming Christmas shopping that still has to be done.

For the past few years, Black Friday and Cyber Monday have also become a thing in Namibia. (Remember, when a shop in Grove Mall was run over by the amount of people waiting to get their hands on these deals?) Some Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals are just too good to pass on.

Keep in mind, while bigger, multi-national chains might be able to afford to offer lower prices than a locally-owned shop might, the locally-owned shop owner and staff will definitely appreciate your patronage more. Sometimes it is more about quality than quantity.

The past 3 years were intensely tumultuous, with so much uncertainty, reduced salaries, lost jobs and closure of businesses With the past 3 years being what they were, this year, specifically, I believe we have much to be grateful for.

Page 7 The Windhoek Connection, 22 November 2022

Smaller, locally-owned businesses are more included to deliver on their promises and go the extra mile by personalising an item, gift wrapping it or adding a greeting card to your purchase.

One thing that has picked up over time is correspondence with potential customers by WhatsApp. By setting up a WhatsApp Business account, the retailer is able to pre-load offers / stock items for you to see in advance.

When you chose to take part in the Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals, keep the locally-owned businesses in mind. Many are still not back on their feet and rely on your support to make it thought this season.

Take a look at their WhatsApp account, social pages and website to see any preloaded special offers and take advantage of these - if you can afford them!

The question is how to design appropriate gates and how one closes these properly – a massive challenge! Creativity is asked, and creativity - especially from Namibian farmers – seems to be boundless. The variety of solutions is absolutely stunning. • ¼ c. balsamic vinegar

• 1 clove garlic, minced

• 1 tbsp. vegetable oil

• Salt

• Ground black pepper

• ¼ cup olive oil

• Juice of 1 large lemon

• 6 c. baby arugula

• Make dressing: In a small bowl whisk together olive oil and lemon juice and season with salt and pepper.

• Arrange salad: In a large serving bowl, add arugula, peaches, blue cheese or feta, and steak. Drizzle with dressing and gently toss.
