The possibilities that this constant evolution has given us is unimaginable. Especially during the worldwide chaos of 2020/2021. People made use of the internet to its highest ability. While the Home Office concept became our new normal, not everyone had printing facilities at home. This resulted in many companies making use of online platforms to share documents, rather than printing and filing. Many have now opted to operate using cloud powered content platforms, accessible to the employee from anywhere with an internet connection.

Welcome to the Paperless Office

The history of technology is the history of invention of tools and techniques. The term came from the Greek word techne which means art and craft. It was first used to describe applied arts but now it is used to describe the advancement and changes around us.

When we hear the word “technology”, we think of smartphones, tablets, or any computer related device. Almost everyone we know owns at least one of these.

Since the invention of the first computer, we have seen a remarkable evolution in what this technology can do. What started in 1984 with a difficult to operate, analog based, computer system, with a download speed of 2.4kbps, identified as “1G” has now with the latest advancement evolved to 5G, with download speeds of 10GB per second!!

The Windhoek Connection is a platform for local businesses to reach local residents by means of a weekly newsletter distributed to a large local audience on various platforms. With the upcoming December holidays, many have started planning their break away to the coastal towns. We have started working on a special issue, titled “Namibia @ The Coast” covering the coastal towns of Hentiesbaai, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay.

Paper-based systems are a costburden. It is estimated that companies spend between 1 to 3% of their revenue on office printing. That doesn’t even account for the cost of filing, shipping and storing documents— let alone the cost of the actual paper. And let’s face it: most of the paper we print is discarded in File 13. The Environmental Protection Agency found that 2.5 million tons of magazines get thrown away every Improvementsyear.

in printers and photocopiers made it much easier to reproduce documents in bulk, causing the worldwide use of office paper to more than double from 1980 to 2000. This was attributed to the increased ease of

Page 3 The Windhoek Connection, 20 September 2022

document production and widespread use of electronic communication, which resulted in users receiving large numbers of documents that were often printed out.

However, since about 2000, the use of office paper has leveled off and is now decreasing, which has been attributed to a generation shift; younger people are believed to be less inclined to print out documents, and more inclined to read them on a full-color interactive display screen.

publishing also comes with some environmental issues, though it is far better than the alternative of destroying the forests. The biggest challenge is the carbon footprint from charging devices and online activity, which currently accounts for approximately 3.7% of global emissions. This challenge is however not a result of, or limited to online publications, as even those who prefer printed books, magazines and newspapers also use the internet and have to charge their electronic devices.

The Windhoek Connection started off with the idea of being a printed publication, available at local businesses for customers to take free of charge; and partially that dream is still there. However, when taking environmentaltheimpact into consideration, it would definitely be wiser to keep it digital. Saved as a PDF file, this can be easily shared far and wide with tools such as WhatsApp, Email and Issuu. The impact and readership far exceeds that of a printed edition.

Surround yourself with people who talk about visions and ideas. Not people.

As a sidenote: Despite stereotypes endorsed by older generations, millennials are one of the hardest working generations. Over a quarter of them work 2 or more jobs. The number of weekly working hours is also astonishing for this generation, with 73% working more than 40 hours per week, and almost 25% working more than 50 hours. Depending on who’s leading them, millennials can range from being excellent

This is also the generation making use of online platforms to catch the latest news, thinking twice before printing, and being aware of the environmental impact of their actions. This is the generation reading what we write. Let’s write it on a platform this generation embraces, while saving paper and lowering the impact on the environment.
