With over 1,000 miles of blue-ribbon trout rivers such as the Gallatin, Madison and Yellowstone—as well as numerous tributaries and smaller streams—producing Brook, Brown, Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout in great abundance, Yellowstone Country is a fishing haven for young and old alike. that this corner of Montana has become a fly fishing mandatory. But it’s not all fly vests and wicker creoles, either; plenty of folks hit the rivers with spinning rods. The best fly fishing runs from late June through October, though conditions are often good in March and April before spring runoff. With up to 3,000 fish per mile in the many Yellowstone Country streams, regulations generally allow liberal catch limits. Obtain permission before you enter or cross private land. Consult local fly shops for specific tackle recommendations. For streamflow, license, boating and fishing regulations visit fwp.mt.gov.
