Surrounded by some of Western Montana’s most spectacular mountains and only a few minutes from Glacier National Park is the small community of Hungry Horse. During the heyday of the Hungry Horse Dam project, Martin City was a boomtown, home to rowdy residents, dam workers and some of the heartiest residents in the region. Just a few minutes’ drive from Glacier National Park and the nearby Flathead National Forest, the region has plentiful opportunities ideal for a remote, quiet camping experience with numerous trails leading into nearby wilderness areas. Time it right and experience one of Martin City’s best traditions—Cabin Fever Days—held annually in February.

Less than 1 mile from the northwest entrance to Glacier National Park is the community of Polebridge. Made up of a handful of houses, cabins, a hostel and small ranches along the North Fork Road, the hub of this area is the historic mercantile. A one-stop shop for locals and visitors alike, the merc is famous for its freshly baked goods, sandwiches and authentic personality.

Serving as the east entrance to Glacier National Park and the Going-to-the-Sun Road, St. Mary is a prime home base for exploring the east side of the park, as well as the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. While most of its offerings are seasonal, St. Mary has lodging accommodations, a grocery store, gas station, restaurants and campground. During the winter months, visitors can access the Going-to-the-Sun Road for cross-country skiing from the St. Mary entrance.

Serving as the western gateway to Glacier National Park, West Glacier is “guide central” with many adventures in and around the park beginning and ending here. Guide services offer trips that include hiking, whitewater and scenic rafting, flyfishing, overnight excursions, trail rides and helicopter tours. In summer and fall, this bustling community has Montana-minded shops, great local dining and numerous accommodations. Quieter during winter, West Glacier does offer lodging and dining during the park’s slower season.
