A BETTER

TOGETHER AT JOHN HA NDL E Y H I G H S CH O O L

Note to donors The compelling vision of integrating traditional academics with traditional career classes to form a real world learning experience for kids has captured our imagination and we are excited to support this project and see it through to completion.

Fred & Karen Schaufeld

We have opportunities to support many good and worthy causes through our foundation, however, this project is at the top of our list as we believe it is a gamechanger. Not only will the students and the community of Winchester benefit, but this project promises to be a blueprint for other communities seeking to re-imagine education and prepare a workforce for the 21st century. Grace & Emil Shihadeh

This project promises to be a blueprint for other communities seeking to re-imagine education.

We ask that you consider giving to this project. In the fall of 2017, our family committed $1 million to develop the new innovation center in honor of Emil Shihadeh, Karen’s father. We believe in this project and look forward to seeing it through to completion. Please join us in re-imagining the future of education.

Fred & Karen Schaufeld

We are a DIFFERENT kind of education co n c e i v e d in the belief that learning should connect and transfer across disciplines, the innovation center seeks to capitalize on the new world of work in the 21st century. Students will learn through in-depth, multi-week projects that require individual mastery of content and group application. The experience will mirror the world of work as students negotiate the constraints of time while managing projects, personal learning and group dynamics.

NO BELLS. NO CLASSROOMS. STUDENTS AT THE CENTER. TEACHERS BY THEIR SIDE.

"The E&G Shihadeh Innovation Center will empower students with 21st century readiness through an integrated, project based learning approach that will connect with local industry to develop life ready graduates that are highly skilled, self-directed and community minded."

INTEGRATED LEARNING t h r o u g h a robust digital learning infrastructure, students will be able

to connect two or more traditional courses together in order to learn seamlessly. One student may integrate art, math and welding, while another student integrates chemistry, health sciences and history. Projects will be the glue that hold the integration together as students learn content from two or more courses at one time. Teachers will ensure mastery of the standards through personalized learning and coaching. Students will be self-directed to navigate each course requirement and collaborate with their peers in order to develop the critical soft skills necessary to succeed in the world of work.

Students will be learning core academic subjects THROUGH Career and Technical Education. For example, students will earn a high school math credit in conjunction with welding or a student will earn a chemistry credit at the same time as a health science credit.

STUDENT OWNERSHIP OF LEARNING

Three ACADEMIES The Emil and Grace Shihadeh Innovation Center will be organized into three career-based academies. The academy model provides the structure for integrated curriculum, including industry certifications, and a cohort dynamic that brings pride and a sense of belonging to the experience for students.

Health Sciences Employment in healthcare occupations is projected to grow 19 percent from 2014 to 2024, adding about 2.3 million new jobs. Healthcare occupations will add more jobs than any other group of occupations.

Professional Skills

Advanced Technologies

For example, in five years, 25% of skilled welders will be retiring. Today a welder can earn more than a Fortune 500 company mid-level executive.

More than 290,000 cybersecurity jobs in the U.S. are unfilled, and postings are up 75% over the past 5 years. With a huge shortage of qualified cybersecurity talent, companies & government agencies are aggressively trying to fill their openings.

CORE ACADEMICS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP INTEGRATED INTO ALL THREE ACADEMIES.

PROJECTED PLANS

Real World Simulation The Innovation Center is designed with the real world in mind. Each academy will look and feel like the real world of work and students will navigate their time as if in the real world - meeting deadlines, navigating time constraints, scheduling meetings with experts and their team, and completing projects.
