reading the magazine. Because that’s the mission of Shutterwall Magazine: „Informing, entertaining, surprising” Only this way, we can keep getting your attention. And only like this, we can confirm the numbers our first issue reached.!

Editorial! ! ! Last month I placed a bet. A bet on the rock scene, a bet on the metal scene. I’ve placed a bet with our future. The result was nothing like I expected. People say the music scene is a hard one. One that has a fanbase that’s hard to convince. Be that as it may, I saw something amazing happen.!

!

Over the last month, I kept watching the stats on our first issue. SWM #1 has reached a total number of almost 1600 unique reads. Nothing less then at least half a miracle. When I started building Shutterwall Magazine in my head, somewhere last year, I imagined that readers would like the magazine. Maybe, I would even get a few hundred readers with a first issue. Those few hundred imagined readers, are 1600 real readers all over the world. In the first week, we had at least one reader on every continent. And that number kept growing. Every time when I checked the stats, I could check of a new country. Every time, there were more readers, worldwide.!

!

Now you are reading the second issue. This will be the confirmation. At least, thats what we hope.! We, because the team is growing. Suzan Mclee is taking pictures, and Double D is writing reviews. They were both part of the first issue as well, but behind the scenes, they both do more then that. Be it the support they give, the brainstorm sessions or the technical advice. Both have their value in SWM. And we are looking for other people to join the troops. People who have a creative mind, a set of skills that come in handy when publishing a magazine, or just the right mindset. All to give our readers a great experience. Every time you turn a page, you have to discover something. You have to want keep

planes had just landed, and the band welcomes them with a nice song. The smoke from the engines will still hang over the band as they sing. And the cabin crew walk between the planes to their next flight. And all this, will be set in one of the worlds most famous metropolitan areas. The video will release soon, and of course we will bring that up later.! For now, feel free to visit the webpage of the band and the museum. I’m sure you’ll like them.! Wim Op de beeck for SWM!

Today, both Susan and I, have been shooting a videoclip. Belgian popband Atomika chose the Stampe and Vertonge airplane museum at Antwerp airport as their set. Shooting amidst century old planes, makes for some precise work. Those planes are actually made of wood and canvas, so one wrong move with a guitar, one slip of the singer or one uncoordinated gesture with a camera, and we would have ruined a part of aviation history. ! Setting up all the gear, both for the band and for us, took around two hours. Every videoshoot demands precise preparations, but this time, we went a bit further. Because of the location, we wanted both the band and the planes to shine. It would be a shame to pas on the possibility to use such a beautiful scenery. Using both overview shots and close ups, we will bring the planes back to life. You will feel like the

Band: Mittgard! Album: Terra Apocalyptica! Release: 13/12/2014! Genre: Melodic Death Metal/Black Metal! Label: /!

! This Belgian band was formed in 2013. After a few line-up changes, they’ve recorded their first album: “Terra Apocalyptica”. In March they played at the “Wacken Metal Battle” and they already recorded some music videos of the songs: “Dark and obscure desires” and “The Appearing”. ! The Album has 8 songs on it. Beside the hard melodic death metal, this album also got a ballad song on it, “When Night Falls”.! The Horror intro on “The Living dead” gives an extra vibe to the song. After the intro a heavy guitar riff will kick you right in the nuts.! “From Hell” has some nice sing along potential , the phrase “Your Death is my life” is also printed on the back of their band shirts.! The album art is nice. On the front you see the globe with two snake-like creatures. The same style of artwork will goe on in the booklet as well. It gives you the impression that it is all drawn by hand, which is nice for this day of age. The booklet also got some lyrics and a thank you note on the back. ! Nice job for a first album. !

Band: Obituary! Album: Inked In Blood! Release: 28/10/2014! Genre: Death metal! Label: Relapse Records!

! Between all the Speed Metal in the 80’s, a brutal Death Metal band was born, “Executioner”. Later on this band changed their name to “Obituary”. Debuting with their album “Slowly We Rot”, they now came out with their new album: “Inked In Blood”. ! This new album was paid only by Crowd Funding. ! The Album has 12 songs on it. And if you are expecting a new sound, you could be surprised. The band sticks by their roots. So the fans know what to expect when the album is first played. Same sound and style, with even better quality than the early days. ! First song on the album is “Centuries Of Lies”, a powerful and nice beginning of listening pleasure. The next song gives you the trusty slow tempo’s that we know the Californians for. Only after a few seconds you can tell that this is“Obituary”. Still slowly rotting on top of the Death Metal scene. ! The surprising part is the album art. Which is very brutal. This gives you a nice atmosphere while you’re listening.! In my opinion, this album is perfect for people who like old school Death Metal as well as those who are just discovering the genre. They should start a new Crowd Funding for ‘part 2’ next year. !

Don Tardy - Obituary! ! Starting an interview with someone you really love to interview, is always a bit harder. You want to show them you’re a great journalist. Having your recording equipment fail in the first minute of the interview isn’t the way to do so. No problem for the guy on the other end of the table today… His name is Don Tardy, drummer and founding member of Obituary. And he waited patiently until the problem was solved. You gotta love him.!

!

Don, we started talking about the CD, and how you guys chose crowd funding instead of the support of a major label.! Yeah.! How different was it to go in the studio knowing you had 900 people backing you up?! That was a cool feeling. But we had been writing this album for so long. It actually was finished before we started the crowd funding. Some details may have changed since then, but the album was more or less done before we started looking for funding. So we didn’t feel additional pressure because of those people paying us. On the other

hand, working with the crowd funding, really put a spark under the band. It made us want to go to the studio even more than before. I guess we have been a band for to long to let something like that put pressure on us. A studio creates pressure and nervousness anyway. and thats the last thing you want as a band. When your relaxed, you play well. Your creative process will go much faster then when you feel to much pressure. So we made sure we were in a relaxed mind frame. We just had a good time. When I was recording with Kenny (Andrews), I made sure he could be as relaxed as possible too. Knowing it was his first !

! There’s always tomorrow! !

recording with us, that was very important. The atmosphere in the studio was more like: „Who cares. If we get nothing accomplished today… who cares. Theres always tomorrow”. That mood made him play some great solo’s, because he realized we were having fun.! Who produced the album?! For the previous two albums, we did the recording ourselves, but for the production, we went somewhere else. „Inked In Blood” is completely made by the band. So also the mixing and engineering after the recording is done by us.

When we’d finished the mix, we sent it to some engineers. Just as a test actually. And every time, we decided that our version actually was quite good. We liked the sound of the album we’d finished. We didn’t want to overthink it, or bring to much technologie into it. We wanted to keep it traditional. That’s why we produce this CD our selves.! Is there a strategy behind the fact that Obituary stil tries to sound like you sounded in the 80’s?! there’s no strategy. We’re comfortable with being Obituary. We feel good about our style. We know what we do well. And we know what we don’t do well. With Obituary, there will be na 1000 mile an hour base drums, there will be no blast beats. And that’s ok with us. We’ll leave that to the rest of the world. So there were no conscious decisions to make sure „Inked in Blood” would sound old school. We wrote the songs the way we like them. Because when we like them, we think the fans will like them. That was the mindset that we kept. ! We’ve been talking about crowd funding. How about the crowds? Are they different in America and Europe?! Metalheads around the world are about the same. They love their music, and they are very

passionate about it. Thats what keeps Obituary alive. The good thing is that we’re seeing younger fans these days. Fathers are bringing their young sons to our concerts. Who would have ever thought that would happen. But it is. Fifteen year olds are telling us they just discovered Obituary, and they love us. Very cool.! Your songs are all about blood and creepy stuff. That doesn’t show on stage. We were at your soundcheck, and we could see the stage is really basic. Drums, back line and the rest in front of that. Isn’t that a big contrast with your lyrics?! It may be a contrast. But I think it shows what kind of human beings we are. We’re from Florida. So there’s no leather jackets on stage with us. Those things are way to hot. We play in shorts and T-shirts. That’s who we are. Easy going and really basic guys. On stage, we want the music to talk for us. Maybe we’ll use a big beautiful backdrop. But that’s about it. No explosions or flames or blood and guts on our stage.! Straigth death metal…! Straigth death metal. When it comes to an album cover, you always want something „killer”. Something the fans would love. I think we hit the bonus with this album cover. It’s so brutal. Andreas Marshall did a really great job designing !

it. Its one of the most powerful paintings i’ve ever stared at.! Yeah, it really speaks.! It’s a big contrast with the peaceful, easy going guys you are. Where do you find your inspiration?! I think thats a question that John would have to answer. But I know we don’t think too much about it. John realizes it’s not about what he’s singing. It’s about his voice. His voice fits our music. The music is really heavy. Of course you can’t sing about Nascar and other sports. (Laugther)! Have you ever tried that?! Thank god no. But of course, thats why it always turns into the fictional stuff about guts and gore in our music.! Is there a message Obituary wants to get out there?! Lyrically? No man. We let the music do the talking. John’s voice is there to fit the mood. The music is heavy, but we’re happy guys. We’re always in a good mood and we have fun on stage. I think people see that when they see our shows. ! Tomorrow you guys play in London, in the legendary Electric Ballroom. That’s the end of this leg of the tour. What has the tour been like?! It was awesome. It was a short tour. Only sixteen shows. Quick, in and out. I think it was a really good package. Mpire of Evil, for me, was cool because… Just to see mantas was great. And I invited Dust Bolt, because their new album (Awake the Riot) is one of the best albums out there right now. I think it’s a good package for the fans. They get a little bit of everything. Not just the death metal package. And I think that’s important. Both for Obituary and for the fans. This way, our tour is a mix of death metal, black metal and some trash metal. A package like this works refreshing I think.! When putting a tour together, Do you look for contrast between the bands?! Sometimes we really don’t have a say in the matter. It all depends on who’s available, what record label want’s to work with us and stuff like that. On this tour, Dust Bolt is really my choice. I made it a point because their album is so great. I respect the band and the musicians. I like the way they play. And they are friends of mine. Probably it’s one of the first times where I asked for a band, and it happened. ! For 2015, Hellfest and WOA have been confirmed. What does this year bring for Obituary?!

It’s going to be a really busy year for us. We waited more then four years to bring this album out. So we will push it as much as we can. We want fans to own the CD, to listen it at home, and most challenging for us: we want everybody to be able to witnes this life. It takes a huge planning to visit every corner of the world. That’s what we’re doing right now. We’re confirming shows and festivals as we speak. We just confirmed our South American dates for the summer. For the festivals we will come back to Europe. And I guess in the fall, we’ll be back in America. Hopefully we will end the year with a full UK run. ! On a personal note: I’ve noticed your goatee. Having one myself, I wonder how long yours is growing already.! (laughing) At least ten years by now I guess. ! Is there anything you would like to get out there?! It’s not about the venues, it’s not about the labels, it’s not about the festivals. It’s all about the fans. Without them, we wouldn’t be doing this. We’re very lucky, and very fortunate to do what we do for a living. So thank you very much to all our fans. ! And thank you Don Tardy.!

Something Else - Chris Barickman! ! !

As in our first issue, we will bring you something else in every magazine. This month, we found Chris Barickman. Never heard of him? Thats the point. We at SWM hadn’t either. Born in New York, lived in Ireland, moved to the Czech Republic… He has been around for a while. The same goes for him as a musician. Playing percussion on waste materials? Not something they teach you at a mainstream music school I guess. Well, it actually sounds great. With a new album releasing in march, Chris and his fellow-musician Fred

Gillen Jr, have made a new masterpiece. „Wayward Moon” is a great album, no matter how you look at it. The cover photo is not renewing in any way. It kind of feels like I’ve seen it before. However, it has an atmosphere that suits the music well. The picture feels a bit raw and unpolished. A feeling I get with the music as well. „War of the worlds” sounds like it has been recorded inside a metal drum. Much due to the percussion being done on waste materials I guess. The strings in this track go well with that. The fingerpicking highlights here, and supports there. Same goes for the singing. Chris brings his message in a well built duet with the guitar. He never pushes his voice to an extreme performance, but he uses it well. The way he sings makes sure he always sounds comfortable. When listening to this track, I feel like the singer has been influenced by country music in a way. The tormented way of singing you see a lot in country music, can be found in some of Chris’s songs. For me it was nice getting to know him. Now I can only hope there will be a European tour of some sort, so I can go see him live.!

For SWM Wim Op de beeck

Metal Scraps Speed Legend by D.O.H is e real man’s song. The sound of revving chopper engines, mixed into the track makes it a nice one to have on your iPod while cruising trough the countryside. The nice tempo and the energetic guitarplay, make it a song that will stand the test of time. The singing makes me think of AC/DC in a way. Which always wins me over. I gave it a 4.0 rating on Reverbnation. When love’s in your heart by Salem is slightly underrated on reverbnation, as far as I’m concerned. Sounding like an 80’s hardrock track, this song belongs on many playlists. And a song about love should always be rated higher then a 2.8. Especially when it’s made this well. British formation Corporation of Corpse Stealers have got a nice track with I Navnet till Odin. The death metal band keeps you listening with a wide range of melodic lines in this track. The drums support the song, and the use of electronics definitely gives this song some extra punch. A must hear, especially when you like more cerebral styles of metal. Coney Island Girl by Dan McCormick is a rock ballad. Easy listening because of the crisp and clear singing on this track. The piano really supports the voice. I would like to hear a little bit more punch in his voice though. Maybe that’s something to look forward to in his future work. Another rock ballad is Eternal Sleeper by Born From Ruins. They call themselves an aggressive hard rock band. I guess this track must be the exception. Although the song is carried by a nice and prominent drumline, it still is a ballad to me. The somewhat etherical singing only ads to my believe. Only by the end of the song, I can find myself in their own description of aggressive hard rock. Ancient Ring by Glass is a nice example of symphonic metal. I gave them a 4.0 at Reverbnation. The song suits the voice of singer Katy Aus Dem Spring very well. She often shows her talent in this song, by sounding very solid and highly confident in this track.Run! by Wolves is scoring high on many sites. Really, I have no idea what to run from. It’s definitely not their music I’ll be running from. Some old school rock and metal sounds always cheer me up. Keep em coming guys.!

Germans playing the bagpipes and instruments from the middle ages. Sounds scary? Then listen to Vargtimmen by Reysswolf. The track is a near perfect mix of folk and metal. The raw sounds kept me listening the same track a few times in a row. At a certain time, I swear the mythological creatures were stampeding trough my living room. Covering a legendary song like „Für Elise” is always tricky. Manhack have tried it anyway. When you cover a song everybody knows, or at least, should know, you should make sure it’s perfect. Or, and that’s what they did, stay as far from the original as possible, but still make sure the listener recognizes the original. I like what they did with it. maybe it’s not going to be a hit, but it’s a good example of what creative musicians can do. A promising track for me is I Don’t Know by Heaven or Hell. On Reverbnation, there is a demo of the track, and I can see where they’re going with it. The track already is very melodical, and the band knows how to play it well. Now I would like to feel a bit more body in the music. I’m sure these Mexicans will indulge me. Allready complete, is Blue Devils by Slaves Of Destiny from Turkey. The track is very powerfull, well written, very well played and highly energetic. Therefor I was slightly surprised to see it score only a 3 star rating on Reverbnation. I gave the song 4 stars. Satans Blood by The Sanity Days may not be the track that will change metal forever. But it’s a solid song. These Brits definitely know how to play decent metal. No wonder if you know who they are. From time to time the track reminded me of the sound of Iron Maiden. Nothing wrong in that I guess. They certainly are influenced by the New Wave of British Metal. I like that very much. So bring on that new album guys. Failure by Donkey Punch may just be that. It’s a real wall of sound coming at you from your speakers. And I feel like these Americans have lost themselves in bringing as much sound as possible. The song is not all bad, but I’m sure I wont remember it next week. Definitely in for something great are Norwegian band Svovel with Lullaby to a broken heart. The band must have listened to Nightwish and Epica. Their sound is surprisingly close to these bands. Actually, at first, I thought I was listening to Nightwish.

Wim’s Corner! Shooting concerts. People have the wildest ideas about it. They think it’s all glitter and glamour being that close to the bands. Well… It’s not all glitter and glamour. ! The first obstacle you will encounter, is getting access. There’s two ways. You could just start spamming the mail box of big bands, and hope you’ll get a photo pass. Or you can start out visiting small venues. The bands playing there might even never been taken pictures of before, so you’ll have something special. And who knows, they might even become famous in the future.! But whatever way you choose, it takes preparation. You need to know your gear. You need to know how the band performs. Do they have signature moves. Special items or special effects they use on stage? Can u use that in your pictures? What you don’t want, is a four meter high flame, just in front of your lens. You might damage your camera or lens, but most important, you might become blind. In the end, you are looking trough a series of magnifying glasses.!

!

As soon as the bands start noticing your work, it might be a little easier to get into the photo pit. You may even get asked to take their pictures. Obviously, this seems really great. And it is. But it also is the moment in time where you have to start making choices. Do you stay with the small bands, do you keep working for free? Yes, and no. In that order. The small bands are still very important. They are the largest number of bands out there. But no, You don’t work for free anymore. I could give you a number of reasons why not, but the two most important are:! * Your work evolves with your experience, so your pictures are getting better over time. Quality has a price.! * And very close related to the first reason, you invested most likely a lot of money in your new equipment.!

When I made the change from my Canon EOS 400, to my EOS 650, and then to my EOS 5D MARK III, that proces cost me some 15.000 €. Lenses taken in account. The pictures I make today are just of a much higher quality then those I took with the EOS 400. For example, today, my images are about 4 times the size they used to be eight years ago. That’s a lot. And that’s almost all extra quality, or extra possibilities for printing. I can’t deliver such a high quality without investing. Just like bands can’t advance without investing in new gear. We all try to deliver the best product. Wether it’s a picture or a song, that just doesn’t matter. !

!

When bands insist they need the pictures for free, it’s always up to the photographer to decide. He owns the pictures. They are the product of his work. And just like bands like to get pays after a while, your photographer will like the same. !

!

On the other hand, I usually take more pictures then I need. So if a starting band needs pictures, I will often just give them. They might be in a lower quality (but who sees the difference on Facebook) or they might have to wait until I published them first. But in the end, we all love what we do, and we all need each other. Wether you do it as a hobby, or like me, professionally. !

Going back to the start of this column, there is also a different way. Sometimes, when bands or labels grant me acces to their shows, I make sure they get some extra nice pictures. As soon as possible. They already paid me by not having to pay my entrance fee. Or they gave me a CD to review, or a t-shirt from the tour. Nice gestures, that will grease the wheels a bit when I consider iff a band gets the pictures for free, or they have to pay the price. !

!

While I re-read the text above, I noticed it seemed a bit negative. I considered changing it, because in most cases, there is no discussion at all. most bands and photographers know what they do for each other, and what the agreement includes. ! But I’ve left the text as it was. Because it still reflects quite accurately, what both bands and photographers have to worry about. It’s not a big issue, or not as big as it might seem, but it’s an issue that takes a lot of time, gives a lot of stress, and might even break otherwise good relationships between bands and photographers!

in a great way. Often, the only difference, is the point where the picture is taken.! Today, where everyone is taking photo’s, uploading them to Facebook or any another social network, they may think they are a photographer. But a real photographer looks at this world in a different way. An eye for detail, a feeling for timing and a lot of experience make a photographers work to what it is. You can only achieve this by falling and standing up again. I’m not gonna say that I’m already a professional photographer as I need to learn a lot myself. But I know I’m getting there. And working for a magazine like SWM, gives me the chance to fall down, and crawl back up again. Together with my studies, its a great way to prepare for my job as a photographer. I don’t know where I’ll be in five or ten years. I might still be with SWM. I might have found a different job. But I know for sure that it’ll be something in the world of photography.!

For SWM - Suzan Mclee.

Suzan Mclee’s Corner! The camera always intrigued me. It always had that special aura around it. Whenever I had a chance, I would pick it up and make snapshots of everything what came in my sight. My father, as a former amateur photographer, always supported me in taking photo’s. After several years, I started my studies of photography in Brussels at the Saint-Lukas school of Art. This was in September 2014. Of course this was a big step for me as I always was a country-side kind of girl. In this school we learn every detail about photography, starting with digital photography. In january we started analyzing analogue photography by learning the basics of the kind of photography people did 100 years ago. This way, we learn to understand the art better in its own, unique way.! Parallel with the study, in September 2014, I stared to work free lance for Shutterwall Magazine. At first, I shot some concerts in the area I live in. As times passed, Wim took me to some other and bigger concerts all over Belgium, and I grow everyday.! I do not use a very expensive high-quality camera, as I can’t afford that yet. I always believed that if you have a great eye and feeling for images, you can photograph with any kind of device there is. Be it a mobile phone camera, a Leica or a 25 megapixel camera with a zoom lens. It just doesn’t matter. Knowing that Wim has the same philosophy about photography, our work matches

Space Chaser

Alpha Tiger - Attic Evil Invaders Space Chaser

!

Sometimes, a man’s got to do, what a man’s got to do. Even when that means you have to drive 400 km in one night, just to see a couple of bands. Especially when you can see them at another time, close to home. But then again, you love your job, or you don’t. And when I love my job, I go all the way.! This time, my crazy night involved Alpha Tiger, Attic, Evil Invaders and Space Chaser. And they all played at the famous Turock venue in Essen, Germany. Great location, great bands… I started my car.!

!

Knowing Evil Invaders for a while now, made the decision to go rather easy. They rock every stage. Alpha Tiger was on my wish list for quite a while, and For me, they were the bonus on the trip.!

The last support was Attic. Not my piece of cake, but people who know more about music then me, told me they were pretty good. Well, I’ll take your word for it. Again, skulls and candles on stage aren’t really my thing. Especially when I don’t feel the link with the rest of the act. There are bands who can pull it of. Behemoth springs to mind. But if you want to bring a rather satanic act, you have ! !

!

Opening the night today, were Space Chaser. Let me put it this way. They were a great band, to tell the crowd something was going to happen. But the next day, for the love of god, I couldn’t remember them. Maybe that’s a good quality for an opener, although I seriously doubt that. Guys, make your performance stick. Please.!

!

As I said before, I know the guys from Evil Invaders personally. And then there’s always a chance your vision gets a little clouded when such a band performs. With Evil Invaders, that’s always the case. Guys, I’m sure a smoke machine has a „the crowd can still breathe” position, instead of your „Hide those ugly faces” position. We’ve talked about the smoke often, and disagreed as many times. I still don’t think your performance needs it. The set you guys bring is strong, and the band plays on a high level. So why hide yourselves. On the other hand, and that says something about their set: during their set, unlike with Space Chaser, the lounge rooms were empty, and the dance floor was full. And that’s what a support act is for I believe. Mission accomplished… Once more.!

to bring the act. Not just take some parts of it, and shove them down the crowds trote. Really, I don’t think you guys played a bad set, but the upside down cross was to much for me. It may be taste, it may be a lack of show around it, I don’t really know. But for me, it just wasn’t convincing enough.!

!

On to the headliner. These guys were the main reason I drove to Germany. Heard a lot about them, but never have seen them. What a shame. From their support acts, Evil Invaders suits them best. The 80’s trash metal Alpha Tiger brings, really kicks in. As soon as they come on stage, the crowd starts moving. And they didn’t stop until the last notes. Great performance, great atmosphere, great band. !

Lordi - Palace - Sinheresy! Live at Hellraiser Leipzig!

!

Does one need a reason to go see Lordi? Not really. Especially when you are a photographer. The band is visually so great, they’re every photographers dream. They bring a huge show, and almost beg to be taken pictures off. And at the same time, I could shoot two other good bands. Yep, already on my way.
