Opening Convocation

10:15 a.m. Wednesday, September 7 John Gano Memorial Chapel William Jewell College officially marks the beginning of the new academic year with a formal convocation. The convocation also recognizes community leaders receiving the College’s Yates Medallion for Distinguished Service. The convocation is free and open to the public. The speaker for this year’s convocation is Kansas City, Mo., Mayor Sly James.

Cardinal Term

Beginning January 8, 2012 Cardinal Term revives the tradition of William Jewell’s informal “Winterim,” a series of courses that were taught in January between fall and spring semesters prior to 1995. The noncredit courses, which begin the week of January 8, feature a wide variety of topics. Seminar length

and format will vary by topic and instructor; both day and evening sessions are scheduled. A full schedule of Cardinal Term courses, dates and times will be announced this fall. All sessions are open to the public.

David Nelson Duke Undergraduate Colloquium Friday, April 20

“Celebrating the Life of the Mind: A Day of Undergraduate Scholarship and Creativity�involves students presenting their scholarly works to faculty, staff and the community at large through oral presentations, performing and visual arts, public speaking and readings of creative writing. The day-long colloquium allows students from all academic disciplines to receive recognition for their unique ideas and studies. Classes are suspended so that all members of the community can participate.The public is invited to attend the free events held at venues campus-wide.


Commencement Saturday, May 12

The Celebration of Commencement honors the achievements of Jewell students as they complete their Jewell Journeys and begin a new chapter in their lives. Baccalaureate service is at 9 a.m. in John Gano Memorial Chapel; commencement is at 1 p.m. in the Mabee Center for Physical Education.

An engaging schedule of thought-provoking performances make up the William Jewell College theatre season. All performances are in Peters Theater in Brown Hall on the William Jewell campus. Athletics A Winning Tradition!

William Jewell College joins the ranks of the NCAA Division II and the Great Lakes Valley Conference as a provisional member during the 2011-12 season. For the first time since 1991, men’s and women’s swimming will be a part of the athletic lineup at Jewell. The Cardinals enjoy a championship athletic tradition that stretches back more than a century. The College fields 20 varsity teams including football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, women’s softball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, women’s and men’s indoor and outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s and men’s tennis, women’s and men’s golf and women’s and men’s swimming. Lectures Perspectives on the Common Good Lecture Series

William Jewell College’s “Perspectives on the Common Good” lecture series focuses on themes of selfhood and responsibility, challenging listeners to explore the complexities of values in a pluralistic world. The “Perspectives” theme for 2011-12 is “Global Awareness: Who Is My Neighbor?”Through the generosity of several benefactors, William Jewell has created a distinctive lecture series that facilitates both internal and external community conversation about defining contemporary issues. The Smith Lectures in Contemporary Jewish Life and Thought

The Smith Lectures in Contemporary Jewish Life and Thought will be offered as an extension of the academic offerings at William Jewell College for the 2011-2012 academic year.Funding for the lectures has been provided by the family of Edward and Beth Smith through the Jewish Community Foundation of Kansas City.Leading the Smith Lectures throughout the 20112012 academic year will be Rabbi Neal Schuster,Senior Jewish Educator at the Hillel chapter and faculty member at the University of Kansas.Lectures are at 6 p.m.Sunday evenings in the Gill Family Meeting Room of Yates-Gill College Union. Sunday, September 25, 2011: Becoming the Responsible Self—a Jewish perspective on three foundational questions:What is real? What can we know? How should we live? This session will lay the foundation for understanding the Jewish ethos and worldviews. It references the College’s core curriculum, which is organized around an examination of what constitutes the “Responsible Self.” Sunday, October 30, 2011: Between Universal and Particular—Are the Jews an insular people, or a cosmopolitan one? An exceptional people, or an ordinary one? Are they even a people at all? If so, how, who belongs, and what is their purpose? Sunday, February 19, 2012: Questions Heaped Upon Questions—How Jews think and why. An exploration of the basic modes of Talmudic discourse and Jewish thought and how it has shaped the essence of the Jewish ethos. Sunday, March 25, 2012: What Shall I Do With This People—The place of Jews and Judaism in the world. How Judaisim has transformed the world. Is there still a “Jewish Problem”to be solved? If so, what is it, is there a solution, and what happens when Israel is added to the equation?
