Welcome

I

WELCOME TO WILDSCREEN FESTIVAL 2012

t gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the Wildscreen Festival, in this our 30th anniversary year. Looking back at our beginnings in 1982, I know our founders, industry greats Sir Peter Scott and Christopher Parsons OBE, would be proud to know Wildscreen is still championing and celebrating wildlife filmmaking, and filmmakers, some 30 years on. This year’s Wildscreen Festival builds on this 30 year heritage, showcasing the very best in the business, the latest technological innovations and new storytelling styles, as well providing a fun and friendly place for networking, negotiating those deals and nurturing that all important new talent. The Festival is also, of course, an important international forum for exploring how wildlife filmmaking can help reconnect people with nature, and promote positive action to

protect our natural world. The Wildscreen Festival wouldn’t be possible without the huge support from our sponsors and partners. A special thank you to BBC Earth and Discovery for their invaluable support as principal sponsors this year and Bristol City Council for their continued support of the Festival over the years. I would like to pay tribute to Sarah Mitchell, a dear friend and colleague, who was at the heart of the Festival for many years. She will be missed but never forgotten here at Wildscreen. So, whatever your background, the most senior of execs, the newest of newcomers, or the most passionate conservation communicator, I very much hope you enjoy all that this year’s Wildscreen Festival has to offer.

ello to all of you here in Bristol. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed putting together what we hope is an incredibly varied and inspirational Festival. A few of the highlights for me include Producing with Asia, (p24), An audience with… Sir Ranulph Fiennes (p37) and Inside Story – a daily delve into some of the award-nominated films. On the business side of things, the movers & shakers of the industry will again be in attendance with opportunities to hear from the main players every morning in the What We Want sessions. If you missed applying for the Speed Pitching sessions, you can still meet decision makers in the Wild Lounge – an exclusive area you can book on the day for those all important meetings (p5). We hope you enjoy this year’s Festival as much as we have enjoyed putting it together. We think it’ll be the best one yet!

DaviD attenborough

Celebrating 60 years in broadcasting in 2012, Sir David Attenborough offers his take on the past, present and future of natural history television...

N

atural history programming has changed fantastically over the last 60 years,” enthuses Sir David Attenborough. “But the world is changing so fast that it would be very self-satisfied or unwise to think that we were in an ideal place.” The industry might be adapting swiftly to the new age of broadcasting, but Attenborough still sees the traditional challenges of “where you’re going to distribute the films that you make, who’s going to pay for them” as significant as they’ve always been. “The division of money into more output, for example. There is no more money but the output becomes bigger, so that the budgets for some programmes becomes less and less. “The other thing is of course that there are other opportunities now. It’s not just the broadcasters. There are all sorts of ways of getting your stuff visible and sent around the world, such as YouTube and other web opportunities. The way in which we disseminate pictures has multiplied enormously in the past ten years.” Another significant development he’s observed in the industry is the growth in the number of freelancers, “not only cameramen, but freelance directors and small independent companies that are being set up by people who desperately want to film something, and who will plug away

until they do so. The way that the big organisations like the BBC have opened up to indies gives them great opportunity.” Is he equally as optimistic about the future for the type of landmark natural history for which he has become synonymous? “Well, on past record, blue chips make money. But you do need confidence. You need a broadcaster who’s saying ‘yes, I think this is keynote stuff and we don’t mind financing it for three years if what comes out at the end is going to be mind-blowing’. But it is increasingly

mean they don’t run away, no matter how many men are working the camera! I’ve just finished three in the Galapagos and we’ve got more in the pipeline, but I’m beginning to run out of subjects that I know will succeed in 3D. It’s quite a problem.” Another perennial problem is how to deliver a conservation message in a way that will resonate with audiences. Attenborough remains very clear on this. “Certainly, you’ve got to warn about climate change and keep people abreast of the latest developments. But you’ve also got to maintain the mainstream business which doesn’t always wag fingers at the viewers, and which says, ‘this is fabulous, this is marvellous, this is wonderful…’ Only then do you say, ‘it’s endangered, what are you going to do about it?’ Unless you do the first bit, they’re not going to care about the second bit, so you’ve got to do both. “But who knows whether we’re doing enough. Viewers can very easily tire of being told that they’re sinful and everything’s going wrong. If you get home in the evening, switch on the television and another bloke turns up telling you how ghastly you’ve been, that you haven’t recycled something or other, then you’re going to say, well no, I’ll watch a quiz or something. So you have to be careful. But that it is our job to do it, there is no doubt.”

The world is changing so fast, it would be very self-satisfied or unwise to think that we were in an ideal place

difficult to find mind-blowing subjects, or mind-blowing editorial attitudes. We’ve got away with it and we’ve found new ways of doing things, but how long you can go on doing that, I don’t know. That’s up to producers and directors. Of course there’s 3D that’s coming along – that has great possibilities, but also great limitations.” Indeed, Attenborough has become the public face of 3D natural history programming in the UK. “I’ve made seven or eight 3D films now, and I was very careful to select the subjects which I thought we could handle with the gear. I was almost laughably cautious in the first one about fossils, I

Equipped with nothing more than a notebook and pair of binoculars, along with her rare degree of patience and characteristic optimism, she won the trust of these initially shy

Wendy darke

The challenge of taking natural history beyond its traditional heartland is something that the head of the BBC Natural History Unit relishes

A

After spending 20 years rising through the ranks at the Natural History Unit, Wendy Darke was confirmed as the head of the Bristol centre in March. She feels very fortunate: “It is the best job in the world. What’s so interesting about the output from the BBC Naturaly Histroy Unit is that we broadcast on all platforms to all audiences.” Building strong relationships with these audiences is something that’s very much on Darke’s radar. “Every now and then we get a new bit of science, and occasionally we get a new piece of technology, but you can’t plan a long-term strategy on those two things alone. You have to be thinking about what is the new creative approach that we’re going to take in terms of our programming skills. I think being more sophisticated about the editorial execution, so that it has the right tonality and style for how the different audiences want to enjoy their natural history, opens up opportunities.” Indeed, Darke sees many of these opportunities coming in the shape of non-core natural history scheduling. “For instance, we had an open day recently where we invited 50 of our overseas commercial clients to come and see what’s in production and the ideas that they might want to invest in. One client who works for the equivalent of ITV in France, said,

in effect, that they didn’t take natural history as it wasn’t really a factual channel – but that they did do animal dramas. So suddenly you’re pitching to slots that aren’t traditional natural history ones. “The reality is that a lot of our investment into our shows would be based on TV sales around the world, of which there’s a finite number of natural history slots. We know the top-end landmarks are lucrative, which is why you’re getting Discovery doing more fully-funded, you’ve got Disney, Parthenon and Sky… there are some

out, we had a strong social media activity. Having that response from the audience enabled us to find out what sequences they most enjoyed, and the subsequent special that went out was shaped by the editorial insights that came from this. The future for me is in that opportunity to engage fully with the audience before, during and after transmission; having a two-way contact and then going back to them with new content that reflects their interests. “I just feel that we’re poised now,” she continues. “I think we’re in a really exciting time because the technology, the facility to strengthen audiences in that 360° world, is genuinely there. For example, with Planet Earth Live we were streaming to 140 territories, we had hubs in seven countries and our audiences were interacting. “If audiences feel inspired through good content to take an interest in the natural world around them, that’s when it comes full circle. That’s what makes a festival like Wildscreen such a catalyst. You’re bringing together 600 people from around the world who have a shared passion, and it’s a concentrated opportunity to share the latest ideas, to look at the new trends and technologies, to make contacts and to think about creative opportunities – and also to do business. To have that event right here on our doorstep is just fantastic.”

The future for me is that opportunity to engage fully with the audience before, during and after transmission

big players in that market with a lot more money than I would say the BBC will ever have. Pressure on premium slots is going to drive costs down and make it more competitive than ever, so you have to go looking for new opportunities to get work out there. I find it very exciting to have to think about how to bring in audiences that wouldn’t necessarily be interested in traditional, factual natural history but who would be prepared to come to it through a different entry level.” One such entry level is social networking, and it’s an area that Darke considers a particular strength of the NHU. “When Frozen Planet went

he rate of change is extraordinary at the moment, and I think we’ll be looking at five years hence to see much the same sort of change that’s happened in the last ten.” If there’s one man who’s able to keep up with the pace of development in natural history broadcasting, it’s Andrew Jackson. The past three years have seen him move from Managing Director at Tigress Productions to Executive Vice President of Production and Development for Landmarks and Specials at Discovery, via a successful spell as Head of the BBC Natural History Unit. Jackson hasn’t always seen it this way, admitting that he felt the industry “went through the doldrums a few years ago”, although he does believe it is in a good place right now. “I think you had 20 years where not a huge amount happened, in the sense that it was technology that was driving most of the change. So, as new filming techniques and new cameras came on stream, the natural history industry would switch to those. But in the last ten years, television has changed inordinately in terms of documentaries, and that’s created a breadth in the way that natural history programmes are produced. If you look at the prizes that have been added to Wildscreen

over the past ten years, you will see that progression happen.” A newcomer to this year’s Panda Awards is the 3D category, although Jackson isn’t convinced that 3D will become a mainstream part of the process. “I think it becomes another way of making natural history, but I don’t think we’re going to shoot everything in 3D in the next five years. I just don’t see that happening.” However, 4K is something he does feel will be adopted widely: “I think that the natural history industry has always picked up new technology earlier than anyone else, mainly

majority of young people, including my daughters, tend not to notice that really. They tend not to have the loyalty to the BBC that some of us older folks do, and they are much much more savvy about going out to find the content that they want to watch. So, if I were to make a show about pandas, I would have to make sure that I have the ‘sneezing panda’ in that show in order for it to even begin to come on to my daughters’ radar. “I think what we’re looking for now, more than ever, are programmes that have moments in them, that are relatable, that can be publicised or in some way find their way out. Take Frozen Planet, you only have to look at ‘criminal penguins’ and you think to yourself, that was a very clever piece of marketing. You have a very simple sequence, you call it criminal penguins, you put it on YouTube and it brings people to it. So I do think that that is now a question when you are looking to commission something; you’re saying to yourself, how can I get this through the chatter, how can I get this through the buzz, how can I make this work given that there is so much material out there? We’ve got to be thinking about how we reach younger audiences, wider audiences, and in what way we can make a subject attractive in the marketplace.”

I think that’s what we are looking for now: programs that now, more than ever, have moments in them that are relatable

because we have assets that you can keep forever. You can show it this year and you can show it in 20 years’ time and people will still want to watch it.” Jackson views the increasingly fragmented way in which content can be consumed as having a huge impact on the type of films that are commissioned. “We’re still very lucky in the UK; people still make an appointment to view”, he says. “The BBC still has a pretty great stranglehold, it’s still number one and two in the EPG and it’s not broken up by adverts.
