Governor’s Civics Awards for Schools

Duke of Ed has been a highlight throughout my schooling and will continue to be as I begin my Gold Award this year. Wildy provides so much support in all aspects of the award including physical recreation, service and the incredible adventurous journeys. Since Year 9, when I began my Bronze Award, I have been encouraged to give service both within the School and in the wider community with worthwhile organisations and charities. This has opened my eyes to areas in our community that need our support as well witnessing the hundreds of volunteers who run these organisations. I have also developed lasting relationships with my peers, especially on our recent kayaking expedition at Ral Ral Creek. This challenging yet rewarding journey is something that I will look back on for years. Every girl at Wilderness is encouraged to take all opportunities presented and Duke of Ed is a fulfilling way to keep track of the amazing things we take part in during our valuable years at school.

GOVERNOR’S CIVICS AWARDS FOR SCHOOLS OVERALL STATE WINNERS
The Governor’s Civics Awards is a competition for students in Years 5 to 10, sponsored by our Governor, His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le, to enable students to explore, learn about and present on a topic based on South Australian Civics and Citizenship. This year, the question posed to our students was: Why is it important for young people to know about the establishment and early years of the South Australian colony? With the guidance and support of their teachers, students in our Year 5 and 6 cohort considered creative ways to explore and answer this question, choosing a significant person to investigate through this lens. Each student prepared a presentation in a range of varied media styles and was assessed using the following criteria: • the use of relevant data and information from a range of sources • the presentation using appropriate terms and conventions • originality • engagement with audience • identification and reflection on viewpoints to develop a conclusion to the question. It is with delight that we are able to share the outstanding results of a number of our students in the competition, including Year 5 student, Annika Ganesh and Year 6 student, Lily Harper, who both received Merit Awards.
Year 5 student Alexandra Pringle and Year 6 student, Sandra Pushpangadan both received exceptional results, and were awarded the overall first place for the State in their year levels. Alexandra was recognised for her comparative piece on the different perspectives of key stakeholders during colonisation, ‘Broken Promises’ and Sandra for her presentation on the life and significant contributions of Dame Roma Mitchell. Both Alexandra and Sandra were presented with their medallions by His Excellency the Governor Hieu Van Le at a special Proclamation Day event held on Monday 28 December, 2020.
