Wildy Fringe

2020 saw the birth of the Wildy Fringe - a two-night spectacular of Wilderness creative delights! This new event in the Wilderness Creative Industries calendar offered audiences a showcase of dramatic and musical performances, screenings of films, animations, photography and exhibitions of artwork. On stage, Year 7 Drama students performed a series of self-devised shows that toiled with notions of fate, inspired by their studies of Ancient Greek Theatre. The Year 9 Drama ‘Theatre for Change’ pieces challenged the audience to think deeply, while the Year 10 students explored the realms of Absurdist Theatre with their aptly named piece ‘Absurdia: Three Absurd Plays by Helen Yang and Aldo Longobardi’. The Year 11 Stand Up Theatre Company performed ‘Control Freaks’ providing the viewers with a humorous, yet poignant exploration of humanity’s obsession with control. In Hender Hall, the Gwen Robinson Pianoforte Competition treated the audience to an amazing display of the girls’ incredible musical talent. The adjudicator for the evening, Monika Laczofy OAM was so impressed with all of the performances she announced Year 5 student Sarah Mah as the overall winner and also recognised Year 8 student Victoria Phan with a ‘special judge’s award’. In between shows the entertainment didn’t stop with the Jazz Ensemble and the Rock Band providing lively tunes, giving the whole event a ‘festival vibe’. Audiences were also invited to the exhibition of Stage 1 photographic explorations as well as animations, nature photographs and visual representations of ‘Self’, created by Year 9 Multimedia.

Along with the wonderful festival of films created by Multimedia students from Year 7 to 11, the Stage 2 films ‘You’re It’ and ‘Carrot and Dip’, art displayed by the Middle and Senior girls ‘wowed’ audiences. It included exhibits ranging from lolly mandalas and Frida Kahlo inspired pieces to the tasty exhibition of a Pop Art Feast of truly mouth-watering pottery food! The Wildy Fringe really offered so many creative delights for everyone! It was a wonderful event that provided numerous girls with the opportunity to display their creative talents to each other and the community. I wish to thank all those who supported the event and helped make it happen. We look forward to it continuing to grow and evolve in years to come. Hal Bruce Head of Creative Industries
