Haida Gwaii Kunghit Exploration

Multi-day sea kayaking

Green Coast Kayaking The waters surrounding Kunghit Island are rife with historical significance and stunning wildlife. On this trip we will start and finish at the infamously wondrous Rose Harbour, an earthy homestead formerly used as a whaling station in the late 1800s, where a possible dinner and bed-night can be arranged if the group chooses. Our journey will take us towards S’Gang Gwaay Llanagaay – the World Heritage Site – and throughout the surrounding bays and inlets. This area provides excellent opportunities for viewing whales, harbour seals, sea lions, bears and a plethora of bird life. Some open water paddling is required to reach SGang Gwaay, which can sometimes mean larger ocean swells and extended periods of paddling, however, the trip is appropriate for beginner paddlers so long as they feel comfortable on the water. We can teach you good technique! At the southern tip of Gwaii Haanas we feel completely immersed in nature as we set up camp on pebbled beaches and cook over an open flame.

Southern Route

Multi-day sea kayaking

Green Coast Kayaking Our southern journey includes an exploration of the intertidal life at Burnaby (Dolomite) Narrows (or the equally impressive east coast of Burnaby Island) as well as a visit to the greatest number of standing mortuary poles at the UN World Heritage Site of SGang Gwaay Llnagaay (Ninstints). On this route you will get a chance to experience the energy and wildlife (e.g., Stellar sea lions, tufted puffins, common murres, rhinoceros auklets) of the Pacific Ocean and the opportunity to explore the remnants of the old whaling station at Rose Harbour. Campsites within this region provide sweeping views of the Copper Islands where Humpback whales are often spotted feeding close to shore. As with most of our trips – beginner paddlers are welcome so long as they feel comfortable on the water. Plenty of instruction is available if needed. 8 days July-August, 2016 $2,000 CAD info@gckayaking.com

Haida Gwaii Central Route Green Coast Kayaking

Multi-day sea kayaking

Our Central Route explores the natural beauty of Burnaby Island and Skincuttle Inlet where old growth forest and salmon-bearing creeks abound. This trip is intentionally designed without a definitive end point allowing us the freedom to spend as little or as much time as the group wishes in areas of particular interest. We will seek to explore the incredibly diverse intertidal zone of Burnaby Narrows when the tides are low, allowing for an up-close experience with many bottom dwelling creatures, like starfish and sea anemones, that are often hidden from view. We will also take advantage of the Copper Islands and nearby bays, which often provide sheltered campsites with sweeping views of the Hecate Strait and passing marine life. This trip is appropriate for all levels of paddlers. 8 days July-August, 2016 $2,100 CAD info@gckayaking.com

Northern Route Green Coast Kayaking

Multi-day sea kayaking

Our northern journey takes us to the moss covered village site of Tanu (T’aanuu Llnagaay, where the Haida Watchmen share the history of this once bustling community; and to the old-growth trees of Windy Bay (Hlk’yah Llnagaay), home of the legacy pole that was erected in honour of cogovernance between the Haida Nation and the Canadian government . We also hope to visit the rich intertidal life of Burnaby (Dolomite) Narrows, and test the pools at the natural hotsprings on Hotspring Island (Gandll K’in Gwaay. yaay), which are rumoured to have been partially restored after an earthquake disrupted the flow in 2013. The waters on this route are alive with nesting and fledgling sea birds (e.g., pigeon guillemots, ancient and marbled murrelets, black oystercatchers), and the spawning herring in Juan Perez Sound attract the great humpback whales.

Multi-day sea kayaking

Experience a true wilderness sea kayaking expedition on British Columbia’s rugged and beautiful Pacific Coast. More remote than sea kayaking the Broken Group Islands on southern Vancouver Island, we access the majestic reaches of the Nuchatlitz Marine Park by water taxi from the isolated west coast town of Tahsis. Once we’ve made it through the open sea to the confines of the Nuchatlitz park, we’re ready for a voyage of discovery along remote beaches and coves, beside towering rock formations and sea caves, and sea kayaking through waters inhabited by a variety of sea creatures, from whales to sea otters, and everything in between. An additional highlight of these west coast tours are the magnificent sunsets.

Trip Planning Resources

Coast&Kayak Magazine is proud to introduce our second book in a colourful and comprehensive guide for the south coast of Vancouver Island. Volume 2 covers some of the world’s best coastal exploration, from wild and untamed West Coast Trail, rarely examined from the marine perspective, down through Juan de Fuca Strait, Greater Victoria, the Saanich Islands, the entire Gulf Islands in unrivalled detail, the Ballenas-Winchelsea Archipelago, Denman and Hornby Islands and finally Comox Harbour – all documented in the detail you need to plan a trip. Including all the latest BC Marine Trail information, it adds to that with dozens of new never-before documented camping locations as well as features to see and practical information on how to best transit this varied coastline. It is required reading for anyone visiting the BC coastline – or just dreaming of it.

Wild Coast Magazine’s six fold-out maps is designed to give the best scale and overview of each region for use in the living room to plan the trip and on the water to get your bearings. While printed on hardy stock, they are not waterproof so be sure to keep in a protected chart case when on the water. Each map is 22x36 inches and folds to 4x11 for handy storage. All are designed with kayakers in mind and include handy references not included with charts such as campsites, launch locations and scenic features. About the Broughton/Johnstone region: The north entrance to Johnstone Strait at Telegraph Cove is one of the most popular kayaking destinations in British Columbia. The main draw is the annual migration of killer whales. Hundreds arrive annually during the summer months to feed in the nearby waters, creating an industry of whale watching boats and kayaking tours. Convenient campsites are located along both sides of the Strait in places like Boat Harbour, Kikash Creek and Hanson Island. For those venturing toward Broughton Archipelago Provincial Park, a huge draw is Meem Quam Leese on Village Island, where you can tour an old First Nation village and see the remnants of house posts and a long house. Intricate paddling is possible in the Carey Group and Indian Group just northeast of Hanson Island, making this a reasonably simple area to reach for some wonderful island meandering. Campsite are numerous, with a few likely to be unpopulated. For those who can get farther afield the rewards become greater. Excellent paddling is possible in the more northerly island clusters like the Fox Group and the Burdwood Group. Both have excellent campsites as well.

Trip Planning Resources

Desolation Sound is one of British Columbia’s top cruising and kayaking destinations, but there’s so much more than just Desolation Sound. The surrounding islands and waterways offer one of British Columbia’s most varied travel destinations, with remote wilderness stretches, frequent community centers for services, mountainous fjords, a number of provincial parks and off-beat camping locations. In addition, there is much to know before you go -- especially when it comes to the tides and currents here, which include some of the strongest on the British Columbia coastline. This mapsheet details it all, in oversize 22x32” format that folds to a handy 4x11” size for easy transport and storage. Made on synthetic paper is is waterproof and virtually indestructible. You won’t want to travel here without it.

Mothership sea kayaking

In the heart of remote & rugged Patagonia, this tour allows you to experience Spirit of the West Adventures quality while exploring the beautiful outer islands of southern Chile. We will experience the best of what Chile has to offer in a mothership style sea kayaking tour: local gourmet food, wine, whales, wildlife and wilderness paired with paddling in one of the most stunning places on earth, all from the comfort and convenience of our personal expedition ship. Everything is included in the tour cost from the time you arrive in Santiago until the last day of the tour. Arrive in Santiago on day 1 and get settled into your hotel. On day 2 we’ll explore a nearby wine region before flying south to Patagonia and meeting the mothership on day 3. We travel the Pumalin coast, the Chonos Archipelago and Laguna San Rafael. 12/19 days January to February. Check out all amazing tour highlights on our website. Call us to plan this unique adventure!
