At the last committee meeting there was a consensus of those present that a 'card reader' would be a good investment for the Village Hall as it worked well at the Music on the Green event. It will be purchased as soon as possible. The Music on the Green was a very successful afternoon from all sorts of views-lots of people came, it was very social, the music was varied and well performed and a profit was made for the Village Hall. Thank you to everybody who contributed in any way. It was felt that this could be repeated next year and should be an outdoor event.

Future events

Garage Sales around the village on Saturday 1st October. At least 24 sites around the locality. Bacon rolls, tea, coffee and maps in the village hall. (Thanks to Romaine and Jeanne)

Saturday 8th October Country Dance with caller. A 7pm start with a pot luck supperbring something along which can be shared as a finger buffet please-thus only £3 per person entry; £1 per child. The bar will be open

Saturday 22nd October bar night-no food-board games, puzzles and challenges. And socializing!

Saturday 26th November our annual challenge from Nigel for the Village Quiz. Team, or individual, entries to him before the date please. Start at 7:30pm with a cold collation provided for a meal at the halfway stage. £7.50 per person.

30th December Plum Pudding Walk 27th January Burns' Night Supper

And a Potential Future event: Italian Night 18th February

There are ongoing maintenance works planned for the front porch, guttering and woodwork around the building.

During Lockdown our monthly electricity charges were £30 per month-they had been £80 previous to that. They are now £155 per calendar month which is a steep rise-as we have all noticed with our home bills. Unfortunately, this means that, from January 2023, the cost of hiring the hall will rise to £10 per hour for those outside the village and £7.50 per hour for villagers.

The next meeting will be on 10th October at 8pm in the Village Hall. Jenny Elphick will chair.

Lunch Club

Our September Lunch Club cooks did a great job. Graham Hayne cooked pulled pork with the most amazing Hasselback potatoes and cauliflower cheese. Thanks to Kevin Knights for kindly donating the potatoes. Margaret Jones Evans prepared us a truly colourful summer pudding with cream. After a cup of tea or coffee and the usual raffle prize draw everyone went home happy and replete.

Thanks to all those who made this occasion a success. Next club is on 12th October at 12.00. The cost is £4.

If you wish to book a place, please contact Jenny Elphick by Friday 9th September by phone 01449 766885 or mobile 07745416091 or email at jenny.elphick@sim.org

Hilltop Women’s Group

Our September meeting, hosted by Liz and Peter Davidson, was very successful. Their presentation, on the theme of “Who do you think you are?” took us through the processes involved in finding out information about family history.

An excellent introduction, using their own family examples to show how to be your own personal detective, gleaning so much information from one certificate to lead you onward, utilising all manner of records and documents to take you back in time. Thank you both so much.

Our October meeting on Tuesday 11th at 7.45 in the village hall, will be a souper! evening!

Sampling the Bounty Of Autumn, with seasonal tastes and their corresponding recipes Inspiration too from creative sources.

Come along for a taste of the season, a mix of ideas, and a warm, social, local event. First timers welcome!

Visitors £3.00. Details from Margaret Knights, Sue Merriam or any other committee member.

Orlando Whistlecraft was a remarkable local character who lived in Thwaite in the 19th century. He wrote regular articles for local papers with his weather predictions & published many books & almanacs on meteorology throughout his long life.

Kevin Pulford at Suffolk Archives has been researching his life & will be giving a talk entitled “Orlando Whistlecraft – A Victorian Suffolk Weather Prophet" as well as bringing a number of items for us to see. We are hoping that people from Thwaite & Stoke Ash will be joining us.

All are welcome so do join us in the Village Hall at 7.45pm on Wed 19 Oct. Entry Fee £3, including tea/coffee and biscuits.

Adrian will tell us some of the story of how the garden ‘grew on him’ and why he believes that the devil is in the detail.

The meeting will be held at Wickham Skeith village hall and start at 7.30pm. As usual all are welcome - non-member fee is £3 for the evening. Tea/coffee included.

Rector’s Ramblings

The past month has been rather emotional. Our nation lost its beautiful Queen. They say, ‘you don’t know what you’ve lost ‘til it’s gone.’ This is so true! It seems that a huge void has been left. Our Queen had a presence about her that even those who had never met her have experienced a huge sense of loss. I have never seen such an outpouring of corporate grief. She was an inspiration to so many and was able to bring people together to work for the cause of justice and peace. She gave a stability to our lives through good times and through bad. But what amazed me most about her was her faith. She truly trusted in the love and grace of God.

She once told her Chaplain, ‘how I wish the Lord would come back in my life time.’ Her chaplain asked her why. She replied, ‘I should so love to lay my crown at His feet.’ Queen Elizabeth’s life and death reminds us that one day we will all be called to lay our own crowns at the feet of Jesus the King – no matter our background or status – and we will be one family under God. With that in mind, our thoughts turn to King Charles III as he steps up to the role that God is calling him to. He will now become the focus of our nation’s identity, work and spiritual life. For that he needs our constant prayers, that he may lead us in the ways of Christ – of peace, justice and love. God save the King!
