~VILLAGE HALL COMMITTEE NEWS ~

Thursday 21st April showed what a fine community we have here in Wickham Skeith. The Village Hall, food, tea and coffee and support for a family funeral. Thank you to everybody who contributed. At the moment nobody is prepared to take on the role of chair of the Village Hall Committee permanently. It is now decided that each member of the committee will take turns for 2 months at a time. They will prepare & circulate the agenda and chair the committee meeting. The agenda will be decided at the end of each committee meeting. Please come along to a meeting if you feel you can contribute. A report from the 59 Club showed that there were a few numbers still available. It will be good to have a 'full house'.

Future events September 3rd Music on the Green (If wet in V Hall) A group called Harbour Lights has been booked at a cost of £150. They will perform 2 sets of 45 minute. Hopefully other people will take part and if you would like to perform, please let the committee know. Saturday 18th June Traditional Village Fete. More details to follow. October-a small scale 'country barn dance' in the Village Hall with music from CD's and local callers for the dances. It could be a great deal of fun!! There are some maintenance works to be carried out; guttering cleared, tiles replaced etc which is of course an ongoing series of actions by the committee. The new, small, oven is installed and working. The cost was £329 + £60 for installation and removal of the old oven. This was made possible by a payment from our District Councillor. The Village Hall Committee are pleased to be able to support St. Andrew's with their Flower Festival. The next meeting will be Monday 16th May in the Village Hall at 8pm. Please come along to observe or join in if you are free that evening. All meetings are public.

Hilltop Women’s Group Our April meeting was a mini-AGM plus a social with delicious nibbles and a visit from Sophie, a representative from The Brainy Dog charity which is a branch of Headway. We presented her with the collection box and a cheque, as it has been our charity throughout the last two interrupted years. She was accompanied by Bee, a very clever, beautifully trained dog . Sophie told us about the work they do and her training skills were evident when Bee was put through her paces. Thank you to everyone who came. Our next meeting on Tuesday 10 th May is a mystery trip, Leaving the village hall car park at 1.30pm prompt. Please contact Jos for details. 07936580082.

Gardening Club As we move towards summer, we start our trips out. For our first visit of this year, we have been lucky enough to persuade Adrian Bloom to give us a personal tour of his garden at Foggy Bottom in Bressingham. However, as he will be busy with Chelsea Flower Show our usual May trip has been moved to Thursday 9th June . We will meet at Bressingham around 6.15pm to start our tour at 6.30. There will be another reminder in next month’s newsletter. We do hope that you will be able to accommodate this change of time and day as we are sure that it will be a great experience.

‘Crafternoon’ on Saturday 14th May 2-4pm Whatever your art or craft bring along your current project. Share skills, ideas, tips and techniques. Inspire and be inspired in the company of other creative people. If you have an ‘arty’ or ‘crafty’ friend then bring them too. Surplus art/craft items & books to sell? Bring them for the bring and buy table. Entry: £2.00 per person (inc. tea/coffee/biscuits).

~NEWS FROM THE CLUBS & OTHER EVENTS~

Flower Festival 2022 “Think of a Number” This is our return to the two-year festival cycle, having missed the last one due to covid. It will be our tenth festival in its present format and the first in our beautifully updated church, which we helped to fund, in a very small way, through donations at previous festivals. Our band of band of willing and enthusiastic volunteers have come up with some clever interpretations of their chosen numbers. We have prepared a quiz, as is now expected, and there will be a tea tent with refreshments. So do come and visit. We are open on: Saturday 30th April. 10-4 Sunday 1st May. 11-4 Monday 2nd May 10-4 Everyone welcome. Any enquiries to Margaret Knights 01449 767708. rosecottageflowers@hotmail.co.uk Liz Davidson 01449 766622

Village Fete Jerry, Carol and myself will be looking after the plant stall again this year so we need as many plants as we can get. Can you all be on the lookout for unwanted seedlings and pot them up ready, or perhaps you are dividing perennials or potting on your veg or annuals and have some spare. Please keep them all and leave them with us on the morning of the fete. All contributions are much appreciated. Thank you, Rosie Bassett

April 23rd Table Tennis Competition, was held over a successful couple of evenings. Well done to all the players-especially Leigh, who won the main event, albeit after a scare from Steve, and to Mark who won the first-round losers’ cup. There was not a huge crowd but the bar closed at 10:30 and a profit was made for the Village Halland more importantly those who came had an enjoyable evening. A great deal of chat went on!

Buy a Bear and Feed a Child In Afghanistan countless children are facing a winter of cold and starvation. But together we can help. UNICEF can feed one of those hungry children for a whole week for just five pounds. Incredible!! So please buy a bear and feed a child. Made by Wendy Thomas, 8 St Andrews Close, Tel 01449 768048

Book, jigsaw and marmalade sale and Coffee morning in aid of the church building Yes - we are re-starting at last On Saturday 14th May from 10am to 11.30 am at Margaret's Highbanks, 1, Broadway, Wickham Skeith. Do come. 01449 767121 Delicious cakes, Jean's cheese scones, sausage rolls and coffee/tea Marmalade and a few jams and chutneys for sale too.

Rector’s Ramblings There is so much to look forward to! In an Easter celebratory mood, I often look forward to the events of Summer and the festivals of the church, including Ascension and Pentecost. This year we also have the Platinum Jubilee to look forward to. Our Queen has shown dedication and love to the people she serves – and she sees herself very much as a servant rather than a leader. She is quite open about her faith and her love for God and she stands as an example of all that leadership should look like – servant hearted. Jesus said that he came to us not to be served, but to serve. Often, we think about having to run around after Jesus and serving him in our different ways. Actually we should stop and allow him to attend to our needs and serve us. That’s probably the flip of what we expect from our King! That might be why our world is so tired. If we only see God as one who sits on the clouds of heaven and desires to be worshipped, obeyed and served, then we might get a shock when he asks to be actively involved in our lives and in the world as a gentle servant. Jesus gives us the ultimate example of what it means to serve. Our servant Queen follows his example and we must too, in order that our lives, country and world see God for who he really is – our servant King. Revd Carl
