Crafternoon 2-4pm Village Halloween Party 5-8pm

~VILLAGE HALL COMMITTEE NEWS ~ It was terrific to be back in the hall with people for our 'Village Social'. A shame the weather wasn't better for a few more games outside but the hardy few did enjoy a game of rounders on the green. The bar and BBQ were enjoyed by all and villagers were able to decide on whether they wished to be indoors, outdoors or a mixture of both. A profit was made for the funds but more importantly villagers got together, new residents attended and 'old hands' turned up in-well not quite droves-but a good number. Thank you all it was a pleasure to return to bar duty! On Sunday September 12th there will be a Village Treasure Hunt starting at 2.30pm from the Hall. £5 per family or couple. Prizes for the winners-not necessarily first past the post! Finish at Village Hall with sausage rolls, tea or coffee and the bar. Come along for some fun on Sunday and maybe learn some things about the village and its environs. Saturday October 30th is pencilled into the calendar for a Village Halloween Party. 58pm. More details to be published in the next newsletter. Our annual village contest in the form of the Quiz is on Saturday November 20th, starting at 7.30. Booking will be necessary. In the build up to the festive season on Saturday December 18th we are holding a Village Christmas Party. Again, not just for children - 5pm to 8pm To complete the year's activities on Tuesday December 28th is the Plum Pudding Walk with a start time of 11.00 from the Hall. As is usual this will be followed by soup and French bread in the Hall-preceded by mulled wine of course! Pete Davidson, Will Elphick and Harriet Bowes are the new group organising the 59 Club. More details in due course. The first prize in the weekly Saturday draw will be £30 Most clubs and groups hope to be restarting in September although History Group is not yet confirmed. Tea and Chat will sound out people at the Lunch Club which is having its first lunch on September 8th. Hoping to see you at the Hall soon-for something!

49/59 Club Recent winning numbers are 48, 58, 58, 51

Lunch Club We are really pleased to confirm that Lunch Club will be restarting on Wed 8th Sep. We would like to invite all those who live in the village and who have reached the age 60 or over to join us. Of course, those who have recently moved into the village and those who have never been to a Lunch Club before are especially warmly welcomed. We offer a very good 2 course meal with coffee for the fabulous value of only £3.50. All this and the opportunity to meet villagers and enjoy some great conversation. We meet up at 12 o’clock in time for a 12.30 meal and we hold a small raffle each month just for a bit of fun and to raise some funds. Please contact me for any further information if you are interested in joining us. It is planned that this September meeting will celebrate the Golden Wedding anniversary of Pete and Liz Davidson (albeit 13 months late!). Hoping that you will join us as this should be a great way to start our Lunch Club again after such a long and difficult time away! Thanks to those of you who have already booked your place at this event. In order for us to cater for the correct numbers can I please ask that anyone wishing to attend on the 8th September, either current members or new members, should book a place by the 3rd September by phone or email, contact details below. ~HISTORY NOTES~

Wickham Skeith and the Hennikers of Thornham Magna – Part 2 My thanks to Nigel Merriam & Romaine Elsden who have provided much of the information in this month’s History Notes. Last month I discussed the development of the Thornham Estate by the Henniker family, starting in the 18th century up to the sale after WWI of 21,000 acres. Another significant sale took place on 27 July 1948 of 4500 acres & it is this sale which was of particular significance to Wickham Skeith. By this time, the Hennikers owned Hall Farm, Green Farm, Place Farm, Starhouse Farm (partly in Thornham Magna) & Upper Eastlands Farm (partly in Finningham). There were also 12 cottages in the village belonging to the estate for sale: nos. 121, 122, 124-6, 131-6 + two others. Many of these old estate numbers are still used today. It seems that most of the farms & cottages in the 1948 sale were purchased by the Metropolitan Railway Company. This was one of the main London Underground companies but in 1933 it, along with the other underground operators, was taken over by the London Passenger Transport Board. I can only presume that the main business of the company by 1948 was to support its pension scheme. The MRC than sold many of the properties to the tenants or others, no doubt at a profit. I think I need a visit to the London Transport Archives in the future to find out more. In the meantime, if anyone has any more information on this aspect, please let me know. Green Farm was purchased by the Mullengers & remained in the family until after the death of Jack Mullenger’s wife Doris in 2013. Hall Farm was purchased direct from the Hennikers by William Ernest Elsden (Romaine’s grandfather) & is still in the Elsden family. Starhouse Farm had two owners after 1948, the Kerridges and the Taskers, until 1959 when Nigel’s father, Hugh Merriam, bought it. Place Farm, where Hugh Merriam was tenant, was not put up for sale in 1948 & Nigel has a theory on why this was. “Place Farm was never offered for sale, I am told, because the north facing land that runs down to the Low Meadows, beside the Thornham Road, was a particularly good yielding partridge drive! So, instead of buying the farm for £4.50 acre, it cost £1800 per acre in 1984!” Pete Davidson pjdavidson42@gmail.com

Geoff Homan Joy would like to thank you all for the love and support shown to her and the family following Geoff’s death. It was wonderful and heart-warming to see how the village came together to decorate the church with beautiful flowers for the funeral, and for the generous catering for the reception afterwards. We will always be grateful. Thank you.

Nature Notes Autumn approaches and the swifts have left. Videos show 18,000 of them streaming across the Alps in mid-August. Cuckoos have already arrived in their wintering grounds in Africa. The last of the swallows and house martins are seen over the stubbles and the village green and there are still chiffchaffs fattening up on insects before they too fly south. In early September look out for dragonflies hawking along Swan Lane and round the Green – Emperor and Southern Hawker dragonflies have both been seen as well as Common Darter. There are Cinnabar Moth caterpillars on the ragwort and I met a hairy caterpillar of the White Ermine Moth in Swan Lane. Has anyone seen a hedgehog in Wickham Skeith?

Oil Syndicate - another record-breaking year Our oil scheme has been running for 12 years now and is used by around two thirds of the households in the village. It grows every year and this past 12 months we ordered more oil than ever before - 113,000 litres. And, thanks to the brilliant support, we were once again able to strike excellent deals with the oil companies and collectively save ourselves thousands of pounds. If you’re not already a member and want to join, just drop me an email with your contact details or give me a call if you don’t have email. There’ll be five opportunities to place orders over the next 12 months. On or before: - 30 September - 30 November - 31 January - 31 March - 30 June I’ll place a reminder in the village newsletter and also send you an email reminder around two weeks before each of these dates. Then let me know by email (or phone) that you’d like to be included in the next order. I’ll need to know: - address and telephone number(s) - unless you’ve ordered before - quantity required (min 500 litres) - any special instructions - e.g. concerning delivery Within a couple of days of the above dates, a bulk order will be placed with the oil company which offers the best deal, which is usually several pence per litre lower than the price available to customers who order individually. I'll let you know the same day: - the name of the company - price - expected delivery date - the company's contact details in case you need to speak to them directly I'll pass your address and phone numbers to the company which will contact you (but normally only if you don't already have an account with them) and they’ll bill you directly. If you've any questions please ring Jerry on 765908 or email jerrybassett@icloud.com

Cash for Charities – FOSA has received £122.64, not a huge sum but nevertheless very welcome after an expensive project followed by an enforced lack of fundraising. Thank you to everyone who contributed tokens. Weekly Email and News – if you’d like to sign up to receive our weekly news email, please contact a Warden or the Rector.

Rector’s Ramblings September is the month for celebrating Harvest Festival. Even though the actual harvest has been and gone, we celebrate and give thanks before God for all we receive, for food, health and wealth and for all the blessings of life. It is important to give thanks for all we have and for all that we are given, praying especially for those who work the land. ‘Giving Thanks’ is something we are told to do, as Christians, in all circumstances. That might seem a bit odd, particularly in situations where harvests have failed or where there is drought, where families in our own community struggle to make ends meet. A response to their suffering and plight that flows from us when we give thanks might lead to giving to the local foodbank, collecting money for a charity, lending a helping hand to a neighbour or giving away what we have to the benefit of others. We often take so much and harvest is a gentle reminder to give back. We give thanks in all circumstances, even when it is difficult to do so, because the promise is ‘the One who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.’ So, what can you give thanks for this harvest? Friends, family, food? Why not come and give thanks with us? Revd Carl
