Carols on the Village Green

STAR HUNT – place a decorated or lit star in your window or garden to join the village trail in December

This photo of the south side of the Grimmer shows the steps which Nigel refers to overleaf. The thatched cottage is long gone, but the house on the right is the late John Hempstead’s .

~HISTORY NOTES~ More water, water everywhere …… My thanks to Nigel Merriam who has written this detailed reply to last month’s article about the water supply: “I remember the water main being put in which was just as I started prep school, so around 1957. Until then, everybody used the pump unless you had your own well and pump installed. We had one at Place Farm, which also supplied the village hall, the school house and Hall Farm. There were two very large galvanized holding tanks on raised framework which gave sufficient head for everywhere. They were situated in what was probably a bedroom in the house which we referred to as the tank room! Freddie Rose, at Brookside in the Street, had a well and had fitted a pump previously. When the main water supply came to the village he declined to be connected, saving him the cost of the water rates. However, in the drought of 1976 the well dried up! The one on the Church Lane junction was the most popular. The one on the Green was the most recent installed, but they did not like it. Apparently, there was far too much iron in it, I do not know if it had rusty pipes or there was iron in the aquifer, so the women still had to walk down to the Kitchen! In 1990 I uncapped the one on the Green, put down a submersible pump and used the well to fill up the Grimmer after we had cleaned it out. I vaguely remember the one in the Street. I think it was almost opposite my house, beside the road, somewhere in front of the garage at Pantiles. Of course the pumps were not the only supply of water. The majority of houses had access to a good pond, which they kept clear of trees so as not to pollute them with leaves. The Grimmer had some oak steps going down into the water and I can well remember people getting buckets out of there. There was a large pond in what is now the back garden of Head’s Nook, this provided water for six or seven houses that backed onto it, I can remember the steps. I believe that drinking water always came from the pumps, but they would use pond water for washing up and even clothes washing! The farms all had large ponds with stoned, graded, solid access for the horses to drink and the water carts to get to. The tumbrels were regularly reversed into the ponds to swell the wooden wheels to keep them tight.” Thank you Nigel for that. Some further information from Jenny Harvey is that there was also a pump outside the Council Houses in Grange Road. Does anyone have a photo of that pump or of the one on the Green? The lady in the photo of the Kitchen Close pump in November’s newsletter was Cissie Draper. If you have any information to add or any suggestions for future History Notes, do get in touch. ~VILLAGE HALL COMMITTEE ~ At the end of this very strange year the Committee wishes everybody the very best Christmas and New Year they can possibly have and we hope to be able to return to some of our usual activities in the coming months. Thanks to Dave for keeping the outside of the Hall looking tidy and to Jeanne Mason for continuing with the lottery bonus number competition which has continued to generate funds available for the Village Hall. During this holiday season we would normally have the plum pudding walk but as with so many traditions this one is in abeyance although it would be great to see as many people out and about walking the footpaths around the village. There are some brilliant ones-why not try one you haven't done before with your family? Check out the map here http://wickhamskeith.suffolk.cloud/footpaths/ I note with interest that there is a proposal to have a FOUR DAY BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND in 2022 to mark the accession of our Queen. Perhaps we should get our heads together to see what we can do for such an auspicious anniversary? I'm sure Melinda would welcome ideas to publish in the Newsletter!! Enjoy the Festive Season!

Stolen Gate from Jessie’s Wood On the night of Saturday 7th November one of the gates to Jessie’s Wood was stolen. This was very upsetting as the wood is very special to us. Thankfully Nigel Merriam and Ben Perks were able to put up a temporary gate to block the entrance to what now looked like an open invitation to fly tippers. A few days later Simon erected a new wooden gate which has a number of additional safeguards to make it more difficult to remove, and easily identifiable, to hopefully discourage this happening again. Andrew Stringer was as ever, a source of support and advice. Thank you for the messages of outrage that many of you shared with us. Joy and Geoff

Rector’s Ramblings Several people have asked if Christmas 2020 is cancelled this year. Let me make one thing very clear – Christmas IS NOT cancelled. The pandemic means that we will have to find new ways to celebrate - and celebrate we will! The first Christmas was incredibly difficult and painful. Imagine Mary thrust into a new way of living, thinking and being, probably at a young age. Think of the stress on her relationship with Joseph – that couldn’t have been easy. Think of the journey to Bethlehem, the massacre of all those baby boys and Mary and Joseph fleeing as refugees to Egypt. The only people who wanted to know about Jesus’ birth were shepherds and foreign wise men. Herod wanted him dead. The first Christmas didn’t come easy – it came at great cost to those involved. Yet, here we 2,000 years later still celebrating. We celebrate even amidst our own difficulties and amidst pandemic. Remember what John wrote about Jesus? ‘The light shines in the darkness and darkness has not overcome it.’ No matter what the world throws our way, the light cannot be out! That is worth celebrating with all our energy!

are the the put

‘Mary, did you know that your baby boy would one day walk on water? Mary, did you know that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters? Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new? This child that you've delivered, will soon deliver you.’ The Rector, Wardens and PCC of St Andrew’s wish you all a VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND PEACEFUL NEW YEAR. Revd Carl

St Andrew’s Flower & Cleaning Rota Last call for volunteers for the new flower & cleaning rota as it needs to be prepared before Christmas. If you would like to volunteer to join, or if you need to be removed from the list, please let Liz Davidson know by December 10th (766622, eadavidson42@gmail.com). We don’t have quite as many volunteers as a few years ago so new people will be welcome. At the moment one or two pairs find themselves doing 3 sessions in a year but ideally its 2 sessions of 2 weeks when you provide fresh flowers for the altar vases in season and do as much cleaning as time and energy allows. While the current arrangement has to continue with services alternating between Wickham Skeith and Cotton you will only need to clean on one of the allocated weeks. It’s not an arduous task, you don’t need to be a regular churchgoer to ‘qualify’ and it helps to keep our lovely building in good order. All help is greatly appreciated. Thank you to all our willing volunteers who do an excellent and reliable job of keeping our church clean and welcoming. ~VILLAGE NEWS ~

John Hempstead 1937 – 2020 John was brought up in Stowmarket and after leaving school did his apprenticeship with, and eventually worked for R G Carter, the largest building company in Norfolk, initially as a carpenter and then as a site foreman. He married Sheila Mayes in 1957 and they moved into the house on The Green, next to her parents, Hilda and Day Mayes. Their son Ian was born the next year and their daughter Diane in 1961. Following on, they had five grandchildren, Gavin, Mark, Scott, Lewis and Natalie, who have given them seven great-grandchildren! The Mayes family were very much a Wickham family, heavily involved in the village, so John had very little option but to join in too. He was always there at the village events, especially working hard with Sheila and Laura at the fete, where they always made more money than any other stall. After he lost Sheila he soldiered on, with help, but his Parkinson’s made it tough for him and the current restrictions meant that he missed having visitors. As a great-grandfather, it gave him enormous pleasure to have some of his family living nearby: it must be very rare in these modern days to have four generations, of one family, all living in the same parish. Our sympathies extend to all the family. Nigel Merriam

Brian Bloor 5/5/38 - 9/11/20 Brian moved to Wickham Skeith, with his lovely wife Margaret, in 2007, following a successful career working for IBM UK Laboratories in Winchester. He very quickly found his niche in village life, first as a valued member of the congregation at St. Andrew’s, then serving as a Parish Councillor. He and Margaret were enthusiastic members of the Lunch Club, often working together to prepare vegetables or wash up. As keen gardeners they were founder members of the Gardening Club and regulars at History Club too. Brian was quiet and thoughtful, a true gentleman - a gentle man - with a wonderful sense of humour. Discussions at Monday Morning Group were always enlivened by his participation, and who can forget his portrayal of the vicar in Sheila’s Meadowford murder mystery stories, or his talks at the Summer Soirees? He will be very greatly missed and we all send our love, thoughts and prayers to Margaret, Deborah, Greg and all Brian’s wider family. Mary and Peter Paine
