Wickham Skeith Newsletter May 2020

Thanks to Pete Davidson for this brilliant photo – looks even better in colour – and in real life. Monday, 11th May 2020 at 8.00pm: Parish Council Meeting by Conference Call. The public are welcome to join by dialling in. Dial-in details will be posted on the Parish Council website, or available from the Clerk at wickhamskeithpc@hotmail.com

~NEWS FROM THE CLUBS~ Hilltop Women’s Group Our May mystery trip is no longer a mystery! Enjoy more time at home instead. We can hopefully look forward to any missed events next year instead. Score June and July dates off your calendar too, but just put brackets round September-you never know! Hope you are all safe and managing to fill your days. Margaret Knights

Crafternoon Keep crafty at home but of course no more Crafternoons for the foreseeable future. There is a new craft shop in Eye called Pop Craft. Concentrating on knitting, crochet, felting and cross stitching. They had only recently opened and, of course, now shut due to Covid isolating restrictions. However they are taking orders and will deliver to local villages. The website address is popcraft.co.uk.

Lunch Club Sadly I have to report that Lunch Club will be cancelled in May. We will continue to reassess the situation. I know that many of us are missing our monthly get-together over a delicious meal however we must stay home and continue to protect our NHS. Can I also express our huge thanks to all you Key Workers who are working on the front line in these difficult times. You are all our heroes! One of the benefits of living in Wickham Skeith is that we live among such a friendly and caring community. It has been very encouraging that we are all looking out for one another in the village and I know this is greatly appreciated. Any queries regarding Lunch Club contact Jenny Elphick 01449 766885

~NEWS FROM THE CLUBS~ History & Film Group: History Notes I’m often asked two questions by visitors & new residents. Firstly – what is the origin of the name Wickham Skeith, and secondly – was there a pub in the village? I will leave the thorny question of the name for another time but yes, there was a pub. It was called the Swan and was on the Street where it is now a private house.

This photograph dates from before World War I and is almost certainly from 1912 when there was a major flood on the Street. Note the elaborate sign and the young girls’ dresses. The Swan was at the centre of village life (for the men at least) until it closed in the early 1960s. The Village Hall was built in 1909, financed by Miss Jones in memory of her brother the former Vicar. It was her intention that it should be a Reading Room for the men of the village to keep them away from the pub. By all accounts the men carried on going to the Swan in the evenings after a hard day’s work in the fields. All of the men had nicknames and the singing of traditional songs was a popular way to pass the time. Many of us can still remember Charlie Stringer, Day Mayes and Tina Pearson singing at Village Hall events. A world that has now passed. Pete Davidson

Gardening Club Update Our cancelled meeting in March was to have been a talk by Anne Tweedle, from the Suffolk Group of National Plant Heritage, on their collection of narcissus. The collection is classified as an historic collection and its scope covers all Narcissus bred and introduced by Rev. George Herbert Engleheart. It is held in 8 locations across Suffolk and in September 2017 the group was granted National Collection status. They have collected 34 cultivars. Conservation is a big part of the aims of this collection and they will be propagating them and hope to have them for sale from time to time. Initially they will be for sale at Suffolk Plant Heritage group events and Plant Fairs. Obviously events are cancelled at the moment but their web site will keep you up to date if you are interested. Rev Engleheart devoted much of his life to Narcissus, breeding over 700 named forms by the time of his death in 1936. In 1898 he exhibited his new hybrid ‘Will Scarlett’ and sold three bulbs for £100. Today that would be the equivalent of £9500! Although quite rare, if you fancy some, the bulbs can still be obtained at the knockdown price of £5 each! A large percentage of the collection is Narcissus poeticus (the poets’ daffodil) these are usually the very last daffodils to flower although this year ours have come out earlier than expected. You, like me, will probably know them better as Pheasant’s eyes. Pure white petals with that startling red-ringed centre and a gorgeous scent. They are thought to be one of the first daffodils to be cultivated and are frequently identified as the narcissus of ancient times. We are hoping that this talk is just postponed and that Anne will be available for next year’s programme. Rosie Bassett

Oil Syndicate news Since we set up the oil syndicate 11 years ago there have been four order deadlines each year - at the end of September, November, January and June. A Spring order has been suggested in the past but, for many, oil ordered through the winter has been sufficient to last through to June. However, given the exceptional circumstances during April, and the anticipated rise in consumption, the syndicate ran an additional lock down order. There was plenty of demand and we were able to place an order for over 22,000 litres - and strike a brilliant deal at 23p per litre. It’s now clear there’s sufficient demand at this time of year to add a fifth order date to the schedule in future years. This will be 31 March. The next order deadline is 30 June. If you’d like to join the more-than two thirds of the village who already belong, all you need do is let me have your details so everything’s in place for the next order. You can email me at jerrybassett@icloud.com or call me on 765908. I’ll need your name, address, telephone no(s) and email address if you have email. Then, in June, just let me know if you need oil. There’ll be a reminder in the June newsletter and I’ll also send those on email a reminder around the middle of the month. A full explanation of the scheme can be found in last September’s newsletter if you still have it to hand, otherwise I can send you all the details.

Heating Installation Grants In Suffolk there are still a large number of houses that do not have a central heating system with a boiler and radiators. Could you qualify for a grant towards first time central heating, either oil or gas, depending on availability. The funding comes from National Grid and Community Interest Company: Affordable Warmth Solution’s Warm Homes Fund and is available across Suffolk until 2021 or until funding runs out. Additional Council funding is available to cover up to 100% of the costs so residents could get a free system although landlords are required to contribute. Residents must own their property or be privately renting (i.e. not a council house or housing association property) and must not have an existing central heating system (a boiler and radiators). Eligibility criteria apply - For more information see www.greensuffolk.org/whf Anyone who would like to know more about the scheme please contact the organisers by: 

Calling the Suffolk Warm Homes Healthy People service on 03456 037 686 (local rate)

 Completing the online enquiry form at www.greensuffolk.org/seaenquiry or  Emailing whhp@eastsuffolk.gov.uk quoting the ‘Warm Homes Fund’.

~ S T. A N D R E W ’ S C H U R C H ~ Rector Revd Carl Melville 01449 781650 carlmelville@hotmail.com Readers: Helen Matter 780379, Elaine Miller 770337, Sheila Wright 768644 Elders: Peter Paine 767897, Janice Shea 781263, Jean Willoughby 766621

The church continues to be kept locked with no services for the foreseeable future but the church is active and the PCC, the churchwardens and Ministry team are meeting with Revd Carl regularly online via Zoom. Revd Carl is providing an online service each Sunday at 10.30am plus a Songs of Praise to lift spirits on a Thursday at 11am. You don’t need to join Facebook, just go to their website, search for Bacton Benefice and ‘like’ then open the video – when the message to join Facebook appears click ‘not now’. There are also plans to create an online youth group via Zoom so if there are young people in the family who might be interested please contact Helen Matter. Of course no services mean no collection plate and thus no income for St Andrew’s. If you would normally put cash in the collection could you consider setting that money aside until it is possible to give again or even setting up a standing order or making a BACS payment online if you are able. The PCC would be very grateful to know of the support.

Thoughts from Revd Carl Melville I don’t think we ever thought we would be living in times of lockdown. It all happened so fast, some say not quickly enough. But our comforts, our routines, our normal ways of life have been suspended or stopped. For many of us, the weeks ahead will be difficult. Businesses and jobs will need to rebuild and relaunch, but many may find themselves out of employment. As children are at home, families may struggle to pay for the food they need to feed their family. Those isolated or vulnerable may need to isolate for many more weeks. BUT, despite all of that, our villages have pulled together to look out for one another, care for those in need, feed families, shop for others and clap for the NHS. WELL DONE EVERYONE! You may be struggling at this time – do contact us if you need a food parcel. You’ll find details of the BOB (Baskets for Our Benefice) Food Bank on page 10. If you need someone to talk things through with, reassess your faith or ask some of life’s big questions, please do get in touch with me or someone from the church. Our churches may be locked but the church continues to be active and alive in our villages. Jesus cared deeply for those around him and he was clear about helping our neighbours – those around us. By helping others, your neighbours and friends, you have been Christ-like in your village and to those people. For that I thank you. Rector, The Bacton Benefice Facebook: @bactonbenefice

~ S T. A N D R E W ’ S C H U R C H – F U N D-R A I S I N G ~

Our Church Finances Wickham Skeith is always very generous when the church is fundraising for a project and a lot has been achieved in the last few years. With all churches sadly closed at the moment our regular giving at services has gone. Many of you will be surprised to read that churches receive no funding for their up-keep and running costs. In fact the opposite is true – all churches have to pay to keep the cathedral, its staff and our local minister funded. This huge cost is shared between the churches of the Diocese and St Andrew’s Wickham Skeith must pay £700+ per month to the diocese. Please would you consider a one-off, or a regular monthly, donation, maybe a standing order with your bank, but something to help our old church to come through this strange time without being dented too badly financially. If you were inspired by Pete Davidson’s photo on the front page and have visited the churchyard we hope you will have enjoyed the peaceful space and the spring wildlife. The big challenge with looking after church land is that it is often seen to be most cost effective to mow and prune everything and concrete over everything else! We are lucky that the churchyard at St Andrews has been managed carefully by volunteers according to a plan to safeguard areas of wild flowers. There are barn owls and pipistrelle and serotine bats that use the churchyard and recent work in the church took this into account. We now have to employ contractors to undertake the maintenance of the churchyard. We would be grateful for any donation, large or small, towards the upkeep of this special area. We have a small ‘churchyard conservation fund’ which contributes to the cost of grass cutting. Thank you to those who have already contributed. A cheque payable to St Andrew’s Church Wickham Skeith or cash (you will receive a receipt) to Liz Davidson at Stow House, Daisy Green Lane, pennies boxes are still very welcome for the heating, for a standing order or gift aid form please contact Liz on 01449 767121 or email eadavidson42@gmail.com Thank you for all your help and do please take care of yourselves. ~MARCH LENT LUNCHES ~

Lent Lunches in the Village Hall THANKYOU – to all who braved the impending Coronavirus to support this enterprise. The Lockdown meant there were only two Thursday lunch sessions not four as planned. Nevertheless they were sociable occasions which resulted in donations being sent to two charities – the National Flood Forum, who help householders facing devastating flood damage, and Embrace the Middle East for their work helping Syrian child refugees. Special thanks go to Jean Willoughby, Mel Rowe, Dave Challinor (who revealed to us the workings of the new cooker), Anita Kemp and Daphne Rose. Also to friends from surrounding villages and churches as well as local parishioners. It was great seeing you all. Maybe we will try again next year, Pandemics permitting. Below are extracts from the letters expressing appreciation of the two charities. Sheila Wright & team, 768644 “We were surprised and delighted to receive your donation in the sum of £60.00. The donation is greatly appreciated and thank you for supporting (us) here at the National Flood Forum in the work that we do. The money will go towards supporting victims of flooding on a one-to-one basis free of charge. Please do thank all involved; we are really touched by your generosity.” “Children shouldn’t have to see the effects of war but sadly for so many children like Ghina, that is their reality. Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, our partners can step in and help these youngsters regain their childhood. Thank you to Suffolk Friends for your thoughtful response to our appeal to provide safe spaces for children in Syria….Thank you for giving children like Ghina a place to thrive, laugh and have fun. Your gift means so much…”

Food Bank - Thank you so much for the generous contributions to the Foodbank. Please keep them coming, if you are able. See posters on page 10 as we are now part of the Bacton Benefice scheme. Remember, if you are struggling in any way, contact one of the numbers listed on the poster. Help is available.

Annual Parish Meeting: 11th May 2020: CANCELLED The Local Authorities and Police and Crime Panels (Coronavirus) (Flexibility of Local Authority and Police and Crime Panel Meetings) (England and Wales) Regulations 2020 (“the 2020 Regulations”) came in to force on 4 th April. Broadly speaking, the 2020 Regulations enable local councils to hold remote meetings (including by video and telephone conferencing) for a specified period until May 2021. They also remove the requirement to hold an annual parish meeting and do not allow for the annual parish meeting to be held remotely. Therefore, to comply with the legislation and in the interests of public safety in the current emergency, the annual parish meeting scheduled for 11 th May, 2020 is cancelled. The regular meetings of the Council (as opposed to the annual parish meeting), including the Council meeting scheduled for 11 th May 2020, will, however, continue. The Council is looking into methods of holding these meetings remotely, and will notify the public with more details as soon as possible via the Council website. Any questions the public may have should be directed to the Parish Clerk. Signed Huw Roberts Clerk & Proper Officer

Garden Waste & Bonfires The Brown Bin collection has been suspended until further notice. “The District Council give the following guidance for householders: “We ask that you please compost your garden waste at home, or if that's not possible, please store it in your garden until we can get this service back up and running again. Please do not place this waste in your general rubbish bin. We will not be invoicing for garden waste during this stoppage period, and subscriptions will be amended to compensate. Although occasional bonfires aren’t against the law, we would always encourage residents to be considerate of others and find alternatives ways to dispose of their waste, such as composting, in addition to looking at ways to reduce waste or storing recyclables and non-toxic waste temporarily. Particularly at this time, as COVID-19 can cause respiratory issues”. It is tempting to get rid of waste by burning but please consider your neighbours and also the fire hazard after what has been a very dry few weeks. We have had one fire in the village already.
