~VILLAGE HALL COMMITTEE NEWS ~

The Music Quiz came and went...the small number of attendees appeared to enjoy themselves despite no classical questions! A profit for the Village Hall was realised but more importantly parts of the community came together. I'm blaming Strictly for low numbers! October 19th sees a fully booked Harvest Horkey in the Village Hall. A great deal of work has gone into this event which has always been a village highlight. Our sincere thanks to Sam Mulgrew for the passion and drive to get this organised this year. On Saturday 26th October is the Halloween Party for children. 4-6pm £4 per child which includes buffet tea, games, disco loads of sweets. Also pumpkin carved competition and fancy dress competition. Please book your ticket before the 19th of October-the children bring their finished carved pumpkin along to the Hall for judging. The November Fair, run in conjunction with Margaret Horne, on Saturday 16th November from 12 noon to 4pm. A wide range of gifts and items for sale with refreshments and light lunches throughout. On Saturday 7th December is the Annual Quiz run by Nigel-contact him to enter a team, or individually -766222. Prizes, food and probably a few contentious moments! Come along and join the fun. bar open too! Saturday 14th December is the Children's Christmas Party which will cost £5 and must be booked in advance. Return form in November Newsletter. And to round off the year on December 28th is the Plum Pudding Walk. The Committee are currently thinking about next year's cycle of activities and events. We have put together a long list of things we have done before but wondered if there are any new ideas in the village? Please pop a note into the Village Hall letter box or contact a committee member (numbers in Village Hall). There are some maintenance jobs to be done so if anybody has a spare hour or two please contact Nigel to volunteer your services. Thank you Village Afternoon Tea and Chat An informal gathering for tea and biscuits. Open to all, young and old; dogs welcome too. Afternoon tea at the village hall happens every Wednesday from 2-4pm except Lunch Club days. As much tea/coffee as you can drink for only £1.

~NEWS FROM THE CLUBS~ Hilltop Women’s Group Our opening number in September, after the summer break, was a demonstration, tasting and workshop by Jilly and Sylvia inspired by all the bounty around us at this time of year. Foraging in other words. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening and left, inspired, with sheets of recipes and guidance and a lovely bottle of herbed oil which we made ourselves. A great start! In October, Tuesday 8th at 7:45pm, we have a speaker from one of the U.K.'s favourite television comedy series. We know it will be a popular evening, so please put it on the calendar and bring a friend to welcome David Webb, one of the twins from Hi de Hi! Visitors £3 on the night. Why not join the group for a £10 sub and come to any meeting you fancy for only a £1 fee. Refreshments always included and there's a raffle too. Any queries to Margaret Knights 767708 or Sue Merriam 766222 or any other committee member.

Wickham Skeith GardeninG club All Meetings Held In Wickham Skeith Village Hall Unless Indicated Otherwise TUESDAY 22 OCTOBER 2019 7:30PM If you’ve ever wondered exactly what that is chomping away happily on your prized flowers then this is the meeting for you. Dr Ian Bedford will be telling us all about Garden Bugs. Members £1/Non-members £3. TUESDAY 26 NOVEMBER 2019 7:30PM I hardly dare mention this as we are still enjoying summer! Denise Johnston will demonstrate Natural Christmas Decorations. Members £1/Non-members £3.

Children's Halloween Party is taking place in the Village Hall on Saturday 26th October from 4-6 pm at a cost of £4 a child. There will be Fancy Dress and carved pumpkin competitions, games and buffet tea. It is very important to book tickets through Denise on 01449 767838 or from 9 Grange Road at least one week in advance-i.e. by 19th October. Always a good party!

~NEWS FROM THE CLUBS~ Lunch Club Once again our September cooks produced a particularly delicious lunch. We had a Suffolk pork casserole from Thelma with fresh vegetables and Gill magicked berries into a cream and meringue dessert - perfect! Do give the Lunch Club a try if you'd like a good lunch for £3.50. Phone me to book 01449 767121 and then come and meet people from the village, who you probably know already, for a chat. Do come - we'd love to see you! With best wishes from Margaret 01449 767121

History & Film Group Whilst forgotten by many, the Tithe wars of the 1930s are still vividly remembered in some Suffolk farming communities – Wortham in particular. Farmers, regardless of religious persuasion, had to pay a tithe to the C of E & many were unwilling or unable to pay. Robert Halliday’s talk “The Tithe Wars in 1930's East Anglia” will bring this conflict to life including the part played by Oswald Mosley’s blackshirts. All are welcome so do join us in the Village Hall at 7.45pm on Wed 16 Oct. Entry Fee £2, including tea/coffee and biscuits. Contact: Pete Davidson 766622 or pjdavidson42@gmail.com

Crafternoon Crafternoon is back. Come along if you, or would like to, paint, draw, collage, felt, print, sculpt, make stained glass work, knit, sew, embroider, patchwork & quilt - in fact whatever your art or craft bring what you're working on at present. Share skills, ideas, techniques and tips. Inspire and be inspired in the company of other creative people. If you have a 'crafty' friend then bring them along too! Art/craft items and books you'd like to sell? Bring them for the bring- and-buy table. Entry £1.50 per person. Next date: Saturday October 12th.

The main project is complete. Thanks to all of you we have installed water and a cess pit at church. We have a toilet, servery and a totally rebuilt gallery. You have all been so generous that I hate to say that we now need a new heating system. The electricians during the project found that the church electrics were not as safe as they should be so we are looking at a new heating system. A very generous donor has provided the funds for a new sound system. Our old system broke down finally just as the work on the church was beginning. It had done stirling service since Ron White installed it but we now need to use our hearing loop properly and provide a 2019 sound system that every member of the congregation will benefit from. So if you still have a Pennies for the Loo box we are still collecting Pennies for a good heating system in the church and we have fundraising events planned - watch this space. With thanks to everyone who has contributed to the Church Project Margaret Jones-Evans, Churchwarden

Book Sale/Coffee Morning On Saturday 26th October, from 10am to 11.30am, at 1, Broadway there will be a Book Sale with jigsaws, bring and buy , coffee, tea and cake in aid of St Andrew's Church heating system.
