~VILLAGE HALL COMMITTEE NEWS ~ Village Hall Committee All I can say is the people of Wickham Skeith must be very special to get such a beautiful day for the fete after the weather we have experienced lately! What an absolutely brilliant day. The Green looked a picture -thanks James for cutting it-the array of marquees seems to grow each year and each of those was full of enticing activities, games and things to buy. Well done to all the erectors, stall holders and dismantlers and organisers too! An especial thank you to everybody who came and brought their families and friends along for their annual visit to Wickham. How great to see so many current, and previous, village residents. Thanks to everybody who turned up on Monday to donate, get information about or volunteer for the fete! On Saturday 20th July-starting at 5pm-we have a games afternoon on the Green. There will be a BBQ and Bar. Bring chairs and blankets to sit on and be prepared to try out some 'competitive' events too! Tug of War has been mentioned! Saturday 24th August is the Annual Produce and Craft Show in the Village Hall kindly organised by the Gardening Club. There are entry forms available in the Newsletter. There will be Pimms and Prosecco-as well as tea or coffee but no BBQ this year. Saturday 21st September is a Music Quiz in the Village Hall. Start to think about your team members! More information later. Saturday 19th October is the Harvest Horkey. There are 8 tables available, with six people per table. ÂŁ10 for an adult, ÂŁ6 for a child. The bar is open and the meal will be soup to start, followed by roast pork and vegetables followed by desserts, all rounded off with chocolates and coffee. Book quickly to avoid disappointment. The pork is from Knoll Farm and prepared by Sam. Saturday 16th November is the November Fair from 12 noon to 4pm. More details closer to the date but usually a good place to buy something special for a pressie. And December is 'Nigel's Quiz!' Please note: if you wish to borrow/hire any equipment from the Village Hall you must contact Denise before doing so.

49/59 Club The winning numbers for the 59 Club were 25th May: 24, 1st June: 42, 8th June: 43, 15th June: 29 and 22 June: 11.

~NEWS FROM THE CLUBS~ Hilltop Women’s Group In spite of the inclement weather we had a wander round Carol and Cliff Galsworthy's beautiful garden for our June meeting. Then to the Village Hall for a delicious shared supper and a chance to catch up with friends and neighbours. Jos Bryant has revitalised the competition and polished up the Peggy Saunders Cup which was presented to Brenda Stannard for this year. Don't forget to bring a postcard from foreign climes to the next meeting in September. Our July event is the outing by coach to Holt and Wiveton on Tuesday 9 th July, leaving the chalet bungalows at 9:30 am. Return by 6 pm at the latest. There are a couple of seats left so give Sue Merriam a ring to book on 766222.

Village Afternoon Tea and Chat An informal gathering for tea and biscuits. Open to all, young and old; dogs welcome too. Afternoon tea at the village hall happens every Wednesday from 2-4pm except Lunch Club days. As much tea/coffee as you can drink for only £1. ~NEWS FROM THE CLUBS~ Lunch Club Jean Willoughby was the cook for June’s main course and delicious gammon with parsley sauce was the result, followed by Karen’s meringues with soft summer fruit and cream – a totally delicious summer lunch. Now we are looking forward to the 10 th July lunch – as usual 12md for 12.30pm in the village hall. If you would like to book or change your booking please phone me on 01449 767121 Thank you everyone – Margaret Jones-Evans

History & Film Group On Sun 14 July we are organising a trip to Bawdsey Manor Radar Station. Between the wars Bawdsey Manor, at the mouth of the Deben, was the centre of research into the detection of aircraft using radio waves. By the outbreak of war in 1939 the first radar stations were in operation & radar was to have a crucial effect on the eventual outcome. We will meet at Bawdsey at 2 pm for an introductory talk followed by free time to view the exhibition in the transmitter block. It is hoped that as many as possible will return later in the afternoon for Jenny Harvey’s tea, which will be raising funds for the defibrillator. The cost will be £6.50 or £6 (65+) & numbers will be restricted to 10 – 25. Please let me know if you are interested ASAP & by Wed 3 July. On Sat 10 Aug at 17.00 we are arranging a guided walk of Bury St Edmunds at a cost of £6. The theme of the walk is “Ladies of the Town”. If there is sufficient interest we will also organise an optional tour of the Cathedral Tower in the afternoon. All are welcome but numbers are limited. Contact me ASAP & by Wed 1 Aug if you would like to come. Two years ago we had a talk about the WWI aerodrome at Great Ashfield. The project researching this, by Elmswell History Group, is concluding with an exhibition in Great Ashfield Village Hall with guided tours of the aerodrome. This will take place on 20th & 21st July 2019 - 10am-4pm. Entry is free. Contact me if you need further details. Contact: Pete Davidson 766622 or pjdavidson42@gmail.com

Mobile Library Service Don’t forget the Suffolk Library Mobile service starts its new scheduled stop by the Chalet Bungalows from July. The timetable is: Thursday 4 th July at Layby Chalet Bungalows from 9.45-10am and outside Haymead House, The Street from 10.05 to 10.20. And every four weeks thereafter.

Recipes for a Lunch Club Recipe book It is ten years since the Lunch Club produced its first recipe book so the committee would like to offer you a new one. This time we should like to include simple recipes that you have found to be tasty and popular. We would also like to include old Suffolk recipes so have a think back to the recipes that grandparents cooked and you enjoyed. Let me have your recipes straight away and we’ll make them into a recipe book in time for you to give as Christmas presents. Thank you to everyone – looking forward to seeing your recipes – from Margaret J-E, Pete Davidson, Romaine Elsden and Jenny Harvey – the Lunch Club Committee 01449 767121.

Cakes at the Fete Romaine, Jenny and Jeanne would like to thank all the kind people who donated cakes and pastries etc. for the cake stall. We had another very successful day.

Oil Syndicate Last chance to get your summer order in. The next deadline for syndicate orders is 30 June. If you’d like oil please email jerrybassett@icloud.com or call 765908 if you’ve no access to email.

Dog Mess Please can dog walkers pick up after their dog(s) or, if that is too difficult, please kick off the paths. There has been an increase in dog mess on several of our paths and clearing up after your dog would both reduce the unsightliness of it and also save other walkers from that horrible slipping feeling as your foot slides on a recent offering.

~ F U N D R A I S I N G for S T. A N D R E W ’ S C H U R C H ~

Once again we need to thank lots of people in the village. This time it’s for opening their gardens to the public. So much weeding, planting, baking and hoping for the right weather went on and we were blessed with a good day, although the forecast was not hopeful. Liz Davidson’s one-person publicity machine produced the information in local papers and on the radio but not as many people came, perhaps because of the iffy forecast. However, thanks to all the gardeners and Margaret Horne’s lunches and teas £389.50 was raised very pleasantly that afternoon. The work in church is almost complete. The architect and I walked in the gallery last Friday – it’s safe, has four pews and a beautiful new floor. National Power Networks finally came to move the heater switches and mains down to the ground floor last week so now the electrician, decorators and plumber can get on with their work. The finish will be about two weeks delayed so 12th July is our final date. We have saved some of the very old timbers for dendrochronology – when we find out the cost – to see how old they really are. One of the carpenters pointed out that the tatty old door to the cleaning cupboard had a wooden lock. If anyone would like to see it I have it safely in my log store for now. It’s beautifully made but couldn’t be seen in the gloom of the cleaning cupboard. Thank you to all of you for your help with the fundraising. We are planning a celebration service for the re-dedication as I said last month. Everyone will be welcome – more information next month but Bishop Mike will be here. Margaret Jones-Evans

The Churchyard After many years when volunteers maintained our churchyards so beautifully they have had to withdraw and we are very sorry to lose them. A contractor has been employed and has begun to mow and strim the churchyards fortnightly. Of course this has a cost to it, but we feel that the churchyards are important. If any villagers would like to contribute towards this cost the PCC would be very grateful –offers to Liz Davidson 01449 766622 please. If there are any villagers who would be prepared to mow and strim the churchyard in 2020 fortnightly I’d be very glad to hear from them. Thank you – Margaret - 767121
