~VILLAGE HALL COMMITTEE NEWS ~

We will try to provide more precise information on our committee members-where they are mentioned-so that you know who to contact for events. There is a committee list and details in the Village Hall on the notice board and also details of people to ask for help with the folding doors. They really are big and heavy and need careful handlingplease do not move them yourselves. On booking please indicate whether you need them open or closed. Thank you. The Unplugged Evening was a success with some talent being uncovered from surprising quarters. The Hall had a good feel to it and the families who came in for a quick drink-or just chat and a warm up - were most welcome and added to the community feeling. Thank you all for making this a worthwhile evening. The financial situation looks better this month but the bills keep coming in-just as they do for everybody so we are most grateful for the support which the Village Hall gets in so many ways. I am sure that there are items elsewhere about the fete and also table tennis which Leigh Wayman-opposite Hall- is organising. So that takes us to July 20th when there will be sports on the Green with a BBQ and bar. The start time is 5pm and there will be activities for all-cheering and loud applause in support are considered an event! Please bring a garden chair-or lounger-and blanket so we can make it a real picnic afternoon and evening. On 24th August the Garden Club are organising our Flower, Produce and Craft Show and I am certain that there will be great support for this with hopefully no weather related excuses available from a perfect growing season this year. A Music Quiz on Saturday 21st September kicks off the Autumn Season so please start to organise a team-and put the date in your diary! We really do hope to have a celebration of the end of the farming harvest year in October with a 'Horkey' of some sort. No date yet but certainly the start of the month-either 5th or 12th are most likely. The November Fair, provisionally on 16th, will run from 12 noon to 4:30pm with light lunches-in the form of soup and rolls-will happen again. The annual excitement of Nigel's Village Quiz on Saturday 7th December will be greatly anticipated by many. Monday 17th June 7:30 for Fete Stallholder's meeting, dropping of full bottles and cans (alcohol) for the wheelbarrow of delights, tombola and raffle prizes and perhaps plants if you can't make it on Saturday. With free glass of drink for all contributors! The committee meeting follows at 8 pm

~NEWS FROM THE CLUBS~ Hilltop Women’s Group Our traditional May Mystery Outing this year was a trip to the Dock viewing area at Felixstowe docks; folk enjoyed the café and sheltered outdoor seating. If you haven't been before, it's a great place to sit and watch the enormous ships coming into port, or the little ferry tracking between Harwich, Shotley and Felixstowe. We drove along the seafront before returning home. Thanks to all the drivers. It was a lovely evening. The Garden Party is the June event on Tuesday 11 th by kind invitation of Carol and Cliff Galsworthy. The hall will be open from 6:30 to leave your contribution for our sharing (knife and fork) supper and then to Carol's for a drink and to wander around the surprisingly spacious garden. If you are new to the village, or haven't been to Hilltops for a while, this is a good opportunity to meet up with neighbours and share a social evening. A table arrangement will be the competition entry and Jos will announce the cup winners for 2018/2019! Summer Outing bookings are now being taken. We are off to Holt and Wiveton on Tuesday 9th July, leaving Wickham Skeith -Chalet bungalows at 9:30am and returning by 6pm. Please contact Sue Merriam for further details and to book your place. 01449 766222

Village Afternoon Tea and Chat An informal gathering for tea and biscuits. Open to all, young and old; dogs welcome too. Afternoon tea at the village hall happens every Wednesday from 2-4pm except Lunch Club days. As much tea/coffee as you can drink for only £1. Don’t forget you can now drop in for Table Tennis practice too.

Lunch Club The delicious cottage pie for the May lunch was prepared by Rosie Bassett and cooked by Jenny and Will Elphick who also prepared and cooked the veg. Ann West prepared a delicate lemon tart with ice cream for dessert. Sadly many diners were attending three funerals that day. The next lunch will be on 12 th June – 12 for 12.30pm as usual. Do phone me to book or to change a booking or if you had to cancel in May and didn’t book for June. Margaret J-E 01449 767121

~NEWS FROM THE CLUBS~ History & Film Group On Sun 14 July we are organising a trip to Bawdsey Manor Radar Station. Last October, Miriam Stead gave a talk on “The Bawdsey Story”. Between the wars Bawdsey Manor, at the mouth of the Deben, was the centre of research into the detection of aircraft using radio waves. By the outbreak of war in 1939 the first radar stations were in operation & radar was to have a crucial effect on the eventual outcome. We will meet at Bawdsey at 2 pm for an introductory talk followed by free time to view the exhibition in the transmitter block. The cost will be £6.50 or £6 (65+) & numbers will be restricted to 10 – 25. Please let me know if you are interested ASAP & by Wed 3 July. Two years ago we had a talk about the WWI aerodrome at Great Ashfield. The project researching this by Elmswell History Group is concluding with an exhibition in Great Ashfield Village Hall with guided tours of the aerodrome. This will take place on 20th & 21st July 2019 - 10am-4pm. Entry is free. Contact me if you need further details. Contact: Pete Davidson 766622 or pjdavidson42@gmail.com

Fly tipping in Jessie’s Wood - again! Round about Friday 17th May a load of rubbish was dumped in Jessie’s Wood. It consisted of 3 mattresses, 3 large armchairs, a divan base, some MDF and glass. This is the second time this has happened in the last six months. Many of you will know what a special place Jessie’s Wood is - especially to us, her family. It is therefore quite upsetting to see it abused like that. We would like to thank all of you who offered to help clear it away and especially to Andrew Stringer for finally getting it disposed of. Sadly we are having to think about getting gates erected at both entrances to the wood to prevent it happening again. We will of course always leave enough room for walkers and riders to get through and to continue to enjoy it’s beauty Joy and Geoff Homan.

Richard Dance Avril, Louise, Emma, Martin and Tim would like to thank people for all the kind messages and beautiful flowers. Richard was a kind and loving man who will be deeply missed by friends and family and will be forever in our hearts.

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS CAT? Tabby and white 2 year old male, last seen Monday 13th May. Very much loved family pet. If you have any information please contact 07843314755

Services for June 2019 Every Sunday morning at 9.30am unless otherwise stated, 2nd & 9th in the village hall, 16th onwards in church 2nd – Sunday after Ascension, Holy Communion – Rev Canon Barbara Bilston 9th – Pentecost, Morning Worship - ‘The Home Team’ 15th, Saturday 3pm, Wedding 16th, 10am - Trinity Sunday, Benefice Family Communion at Wickham Skeith – Rev Canon Barbara Bilston 23rd – Trinity 1, All-Age Family service - ‘The Home Team’ 30th – Trinity 2, Extended Communion – Sheila Wright We will continue to avoid using the church for the first 2 weeks of June to allow uninterrupted work by the builders while the dustiest tasks are completed, so the services on 2nd & 9th will be held in the village hall. The builders have promised us that the church will be made ready for the wedding on 15 th and we can then use the church on Sundays though there will still be plumbing, carpentry, decorating and other final jobs to be finished in the gallery area. The next PCC meeting will be on Monday 10th June, immediately after the FOSA AGM. If anyone has anything they want the PCC to discuss, please notify the Secretary, Mary Paine (767897) so it can be included on the agenda. The Monday Morning Group continues its usual pattern this month meeting at the Village Hall on Mondays June 3rd & 17th. Do consider joining us, you will be welcome. Gift Aid - if you are a tax payer any money you give to the church, whether it is regular or occasional, a small or large amount, can benefit the church even more if you sign a simple form to enable the tax to be claimed back. This doesn’t cost you, the giver, anything extra. Our envelope system can be used for regular Sunday collections or more occasional gifts. You can sign each envelope as you use it or, for more anonymity, sign one of our gift aid forms and then put the number on the form on each envelope you use without any need for a name. This enables our Treasurer, Philip Cutting, to maintain a traceable record for the tax man but only you and he know the amounts involved. It is particularly helpful for maintaining cashflow if you are able to set up a standing order from your bank account so that there is known amount of income into the church account, whether or not you are able to attend the service each week, to help in planning budgets. It costs at least £200 - £300 a week just to keep the church going in order that we can hold regular services and be available to everyone in the village who wants a baptism, wedding or funeral service. Gift Aid forms are available from Liz D who will be happy to explain the system in more detail and receive completed forms to pass to Philip. Mary and Peter Paine treated us to an amazing selection of photographs from their Uganda trip this year. Because the country is so poor we kept the refreshments simple but monkey nuts and fresh pineapple went down very well. The open bar helped – thank you Leigh and thanks to Dave, too, for operating the dishwasher. Mary and Peter have been asked to repeat their talk in Bacton – that’s how good it was.

Open Gardens Sunday 16th June 1 to 6pm Maps will be on sale at the Village Hall for you to find the many gardens that are kindly opening. Margaret Horne, at Twynings, will have lunches and teas for sale, there will be music in the garden at Kisumu, plants for sale in some gardens and there will be lots to inspire budding gardeners too. Do give the afternoon a try. The fundraising group of four will take a break over the summer but get yourselves ready for a rejuvenated group in the autumn. Our project is progressing well, looks as if it will be completed on time at the end of June and then we’ll have a grand opening by Bishop Mike to which everyone will be invited. A totally re-built gallery, accessible toilet, servery, water laid on and a cess pit too – wonderful! While this work has been going on we’ve decided on our next couple of projects – be prepared! With thanks to everyone for all your help and support for many years Margaret Jones-Evans

Open Gardens 16th June 1 - 6pm Refreshments for this year's Open Gardens will be available at The Twynings, The Green. If anyone is able to provide either a cake or scones for this would you kindly let me know. I am also holding a Garden Themed Tombola so would appreciate any new garden themed prizes, eg tools, seeds, plants, gloves, etc. Thank you for any support you are able to give.
