South Africa’s President Urges G-7 to Boost Covid-19 Global Program
South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa wants the Group of Seven countries to help finance the World Health Organization’s program to boost COVID-19 testing, diagnostics and vaccines, the presidency said on Sunday, June 13. Ramaphosa, who joined the summit of the club of rich democracies in England and addressed them on Saturday, said the G-7 countries, which together account for more than half of global output, should support the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator to plug the $16.8 billion funding gap for this year. “We need to address the substantial financing gap for tests, treatments, critical supplies like oxygen and the health systems that enable testing, treatment and vaccination,” Ramaphosa said in the presidency statement. The World Health Organization’s ACT Accelerator program for global COVID-19 treatments aims to fast-track production and ensure equitable access to tests, treatments, and vaccines in the fight against COVID-19. “If all G-7 countries met their fair share target, this initiative would be two-thirds funded – and it would be 90 percent funded if all G-20 countries made their fair share contributions,” Ramaphosa said. Ramaphosa also urged G-7 members to support the TRIPS waiver on patents for COVID-19 vaccines and engage in negotiations that could help boost vaccine production. Around 90 percent of African countries will miss a September target to vaccinate at least 10 percent of their populations against the virus as a third wave of the pandemic looms on the continent, the WHO has said. Africa has now registered five million COVID-19 cases, with the southern Africa region the worst affected, a Reuters tally has shown. “If the world is to emerge from this grave crisis, it is essential that we work together to mobilize and direct resources to those countries in the greatest need – and that we do so now,” said Ramaphosa. The G-7 groups the United States, Japan, Germany, Britain, France, Italy and Canada. WI
caribbean now Education Ministry Unveils Summer School Plans
The Hon. Fayval Williams, Jamaica’s Minister of Education, Youth and Information, wants students to participate in the ministry’s upcoming summer school offering to make up for learning opportunities lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Education takes time; learning takes time and in order for us to have our students catch up to where they were before the pandemic and to move them further, we have to spend more time,” she said. Mrs. Williams was addressing a virtual Town Hall on Vaccine Sensitization for the Education System on Friday, June 11. She noted that while students’ involvement will be voluntary, it is important that they can “recover smarter” from learning loss stemming from not being able to be in the face-to-face environment, unreliable internet connection or not having connectivity to log onto
online classes. “We are encouraging our students (to participate). Yes, we know you’ve been living through the pandemic and we know the hardship and so on, but we have to make all the preparations and we have to ensure that your education is still accessible, regardless of whether it’s summer, regardless of whether it’s night or day, and we have the technology, we can scale it up across the system and we have a responsibility to do so,” she said.
