Now and then it’s good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy. Guillaume Apollinaire

What began by chance nearly two decades ago has became Buchholz High School dynasty. The BHS Math Team has won 11 consecutive state championships and nine straight national championships. That level of success by a traditional sports program would land it on SportsCenter or even earn the squad a trip to The White House. Too bad society doesn’t celebrate brains as much as brawn. The BHS “athletes” don’t mind. They’re rewards come in the form of full scholarships to Ivy League schools and other top universities. Before Will Frazer came across a flyer for a math competition “kinda by accident” in 1998, that wasn’t the case for most Buchholz students. “Almost everyone went to (the University of Florida),” said Will Frazer, who coaches the team along with Ziwei Lu. “Not that there is anything wrong with that. I went to UF. But now these kids are putting together such awesome resumes of accomplishments that they are getting to go to these schools and their lives are changing because of it.” Seniors on the past year’s team are proof. They are Jason Ai (Berkeley), Josh Chipman (Brown), Spencer Douglas (Alabama), Nicholas Klugman (MIT), Lisa Lu (Harvard) and Michael Wong (Georgetown). There is no secret formula behind the team’s success or something in the City of Gainesville’s water that produces the best young math minds in the country. It all boils down to good ‘ol fashioned cerebrum grease. “Not a lot of other teams are willing to sacrifice their summer doing math for four hours a day, but we do,” said Lisa Lu, who successfully tried out for the team in eighth grade. Peace begins with a smile. Mother Teresa

“We went extremely fast and hard,” Frazer said. “We changed the curriculum to match more of the competitive type questions … We weren’t going to be successful if we didn’t match the difficulty of the kind of questions we were going to run into (in competitions).” The team simulates competitions during practice by tackling questions from previous competitions. Frazer said the only advantage BHS has is its summer program where team members practice four hours a day, five days a week. “We try to outwork people,” Frazer said. “Most people don’t have a summer program. Then you go to nationals in late July and you’re kids aren’t ready. “It’s no different than a sport. You can’t just put it down for six weeks and then show up and compete. We’re here everyday.”

“We have people who work really hard,” said Jason Ai, who also made the team in middle school. “A lot of people think that the math team just takes a bunch of geniuses, but it’s the program that’s made it so successful. That’s why we do well and we owe a lot to Mr. Frazer and Mr. Lu for doing this – I don’t even know how many hours they spend.” Ai said he was “pretty average” in math before joining the team. “Just being on the math team made me push myself more, because I’m super lazy,” Ai said. “I wasn’t very motivated at all but being around so many people who are really motivated, it rubs off on you … it’s made me do better in a lot of fields that I probably wouldn’t have been as good in.” 8

Flourish Magazine | September/2015

After a successful career on Wall Street, Frazer began teaching at BHS in 1997. The following school year was when he came across a math competition flyer and put together a team for the contest. “We got killed,” Frazer said. “The kids were asking me on the bus home how to solve some of the problems, and I couldn’t do it. Then they said, ‘Can we do another competition to see if we can do better?’ And the next thing you know I said, ‘If we are going to do this, we’re going to do it right,” and that’s kinda how we got started.” However, the team didn’t “get serious about trying to win” until Frazer changed the program in 2002. He created a “competition program” by combining the best kids from each class into one.

The cost of going to as many as 50 competitions per year can be a burden. This year’s budget was $80,000, with more than half of that being used for the 47 kids who went to nationals in Salt Lake City. While some parents can afford it, Frazer said “kids on the lower end of the economic spectrum” receive help from folks in the community like Mike Warren, owner of AMJ Inc. who set up the Buchholz Math Club Trust Fund last year for donations. “I think there is a thirst for this (in Gainesville),” Frazer said. “A lot of people in this community love education and they don’t know where to go to try to help, but here they see success and people want to glob onto success and support it. “We’ve been very fortunate and are very appreciative.”

New Era Begins The Jim McElwain Era of Florida football will begin under the lights with the Gators’ first three games scheduled for primetime kickoffs. The Sept. 5 season opener against New Mexico State at home will start at 7:30 p.m., followed by East Carolina at home at 7 p.m. on Sept. 12 and a road trip to Kentucky for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on Sept. 19. Both 7:30 games will air on the SEC Network while the 7 p.m. game will be on ESPN2.

Coach Jim McElwain Heads Into First Season at Florida

The prognosis is much of the same as it has been in recent years: The defense is strong with several key returning starters while the offense is a question mark, especially at quarterback and along the offensive line.

QUARTERBACK Despite starting the final six games in As far as expectations, they’re not 2014, sophomore Treon Harris was too flattering. Vegas oddsmakers are pushed all offseason by redshirt putting Florida’s over/under at 7.5 as freshman Will Grier for the starting far as number of wins, which would job. The Davidson, N.C., native passed be an improvement after coming off a for 4,989 yards and a national-best 77 4-8 finish — UF’s first losing season touchdowns to earn four national since 1979. high school player of the year honors 10 Flourish Magazine | September/2015

as a senior. As a junior, Grier set a national record for single-game passing yardage with 837 yards and 10 touchdowns in a playoff game. Though not as mobile as Harris, Grier appears to be a more accurate passer, especially on short, quick routes that have fueled McElwain’s offenses. Still, coaches said the duo “were splitting reps” with the first team midway through fall camp.

who started twice while playing in all 12 games last season. He averaged an impressive 4.9 yards per carry (565 yards on 116 attempts) and had a career-best 197 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries against Georgia. McElwain prefers to rotate “2-3 backs” and go with the hot hand late. That means true freshmen Jordan Scarlett and Jordan Cronkrite could be in the rotation as well as Mark Herndon, a senior from Ocala.

RECEIVER Demarcus Robinson (6-2, 197) started 11 of 12 games and finished with 53 receptions for 810 yards and seven touchdowns, which was the best season for a UF receiver in six years. To prevent defenses from keying on Robinson, the Gators will need one or more receivers from the pool of Latroy Pittman, Ahmad Fulwood and Brandon Powell, among others, to step up. Fulwood (6-4, 208) has shown big-play ability as his 16.6 yards per reception serving as the team’s best among the returning players. Freshman Antonio Callaway has impressed early in fall camp. TIGHT END Playing a position that has traditionally thrived under McElwain, senior Jake McGee has the ability to take the pressure off of Robinson in the passing game. Before transferring to UF in 2014, he caught a team-high 43 receptions for 395 yards as a junior at Virginia, with 26 of those catches for a first down or a touchdown. A pair of second-year players in Deandre Goolsby and C’yontai Lewis add depth. OFFENSIVE LINE McElwain did just about everything in his power to try to bolster a thin

offensive front by signing six prospects and receiving transfers from Mason Halter and TJ McCoy. According to stats guru Phil Steele, the Gators have the third-fewest career starts of any offensive line in college football with all 10 belonging to Trip Thurman, who missed spring with an injury. Halter is a 6-8, 300-pound left tackle who graduated from Fordham, where he was a two-time FCS AllAmerican. Halter, Thurman, Cam Dillard, Antonio Riles and David Sharpe were first-teamers midway through fall practices, according to GatorZone.com’s Scott Carter.

DEFENSIVE LINE Defensive end Jonathan Bullard skipped the NFL Draft to return for his senior season. He’s joined by Alex McCalister, Bryan Cox Jr., Caleb Brantley, Jordan Sherit and Joey Ivie, who all return with valuable experience. McCalister, a 6-6, 238-pound redshirt junior, played in all 12 games a year ago. Cox, Brantley and Ivie usually line up along the interior while Sherit can back up McCalister at rush end. Taven Bryan, Khairi Clark and Justus Reed are vying for time. Other players to watch are true freshmen Luke Ancrum and CeCe Jefferson.

Anthony Harrell and freshman Rayshard Jackson also could factor into the mix.

SECONDARY All-everything Vernon Hargreaves III likely will play his last season in a Gators uniform as many project the junior as a high first-round pick in next spring’s NFL Draft. Jalen Tabor returns at the other conerback spot after starting five games as a true freshman in 2014. Sophomore Quincy Wilson also logged two starts at cornerback. Keanu Neal and Marcus Maye started a combined 17 games at the safety spots where Duke Dawson started one game. SPECIAL TEAMS Hargreaves is explosive in the return game. Austin Hardin has a strong leg — handling kickoff duties and taking over field-goal duties late in the season, but has struggled with accuracy. He hit a career long of 52 yards against Florida State. Johnny Townsend punted in the final six games of 2013, averaging 42 yards on 29 punts, including six inside the 20.

LINEBACKER Senior Antonio Morrison, who led the Gators with 101 tackles in 2014, has recovered quicker than expected from a pair of offseason surgeries on the same knee and leads a solid group of upperclassmen that Many are predicting a breakout includes Alex Anzalone, season from linebacker Alex Anzalone, who was a high school All-American. Jarrad Davis, Daniel McMillian, Jeremi Powell and Matt Rolin. Insiders believe Anzalone is primed for a breakout season. Georgia Tech transfer

Mild traumatic brain injury has jumped to the forefront of contact sport debates everywhere from junior highs to professional leagues in recent years. With players retiring as young as 24 for fear of long term neurological side effects, many parents question whether helmet sports are worth the risk. The Baird Theater Building

The Old Baird Theater, still standing at 19 SE First Avenue, has seen its fair share of uses through the years.

the years, it was the second-story theater that received the bulk of Baird’s early entrepreneurial efforts.

Constructed in 1887 by J. Simonson, it was originally known as Simonson’s Opera House until Eberle Baird purchased it in 1905. Baird was already a well-to-do figure in Alachua, where he’d relocated from Iowa as an adult to start a lumber mill.

He quickly set about a thorough remodel. A third story and a balcony were added that increased seating to 1,000 per audience. The interior was redesigned in a color scheme of gold and white, with red seats lining the aisles and wicker chairs in every opera box.

He purchased the theater along with the block of buildings on the south side of the Courthouse Square. The lower storefronts included Dorsey’s Bakery, DeLores Beauty Supply and McCollum’s Drug Store. While the other buildings continued to change and shift through

Baird’s drew audiences from all around Alachua County. Guests crowded into the ornate building to watch vaudeville acts, minstrel shows, local talent and traveling opera companies.

With the rise of film, Baird adapted his theater to feature silent films accompanied by music, sometimes even live orchestras. After a fire in 1938, Cox’s furniture store combined the three other storefronts into a single retail space. The theater was converted into a restaurant in 1994, and has since become home to Lillian’s Music Store and Harry’s Seafood Bar and Grill. The east side of the building still boasts the original 1887 cornice line, giving the historic downtown square an added touch of aged elegance. Money Talks That Will Save Your Marriage By Kirsten Nielsen

20 Flourish Magazine | September/2015

There is peace even in the storm. Vincent van Gogh

Finances: a scary word, and one that couples often go to great lengths to avoid. Maybe you feel overwhelmed by the information you don’t know about budgeting and investing. Maybe you have a negative gut reaction to all financial matters based on bad choices you or your family made in the past. Whatever the case, talking about money can often be unpleasant and uncomfortable, especially when you are working with someone you love. However, this is one talk you simply can’t skip: money issues are the number one reason for divorce. The good news is that every single couple is capable of taking control on their finances and making money work for them. No matter what state your finances are currently in, or how little you have talked about them, it is possible to become a team that seamlessly works with the money you have. Whether you are contemplating marriage, or have been married for decades, follow these guidelines to ease money troubles and have a happier, wealthier relationship!

Talk About Your Habits People’s approaches can vary wildly in how they think about money; one person might love to spend every penny, while others stress about spending a single dime. Talk with your partner about your personal money habits, and get their thoughts as well. You want an open line of communication between where each of you stand in terms of views about money. Questions to Ask: • Do you have a budget? • Do you have a “rainy day” fund? • W hat do you think is the optimal percentage of savings? • What do you like spending your extra money on? Be Transparent About Income and Debts Nothing sours a marriage quicker than one spouse finding out the other has hidden credit card debt of over $30,000. Don’t hide or be embarrassed about debt; student loans are so ubiquitous, that it is almost uncommon to have no debt at all. Be honest about your current situation, and trust your partner not to judge you.

Questions to Ask: • W hat is your current income? • W here do you expect your income to be in five years? Ten years? • Do you currently have any debt? • W hat are you plans for paying down that debt? Talk About Marriage Expectations Whether you’ve talked about it or not, you both have some vision of your joint finances in the future. One of you might assume that everything will be combined – paychecks, bills, expenses, and accounts – while the other person might assume that you will keep completely separate books. Ask you partner what they think will happen when you get married in terms of your financial accounts and expenses. Questions to Ask: • Do you think we’ll have one joint account, two separate accounts, or some combination of the two? • W ho do you think will be responsible for paying bills on time? • Will we have one budget or two? • How will we split expenses? Directly in half? Percentage based on income?

sure to ensue. Talk about your financial goals and what you want your money to accomplish. Both of you need to be on board with goals such as house ownership, paying for your children’s education and retirement.

Questions to Ask: • W hat are the large financial expenses you are expecting in your life? • How much do you want to save per paycheck? • W hen do you want to retire? • W hat does your retirement look like in your mind? Talking about money can be an emotional and difficult experience, but it is one that will make you a happier and stronger couple. If you work through these questions, you’ll figure out how to create mutual goals for your money, your family and your future.

Talk About Future Goals This is the one that often trips up couples and causes tension. If one partner has the goal to spend every dime they make by time they die and the other partner wants to save half of every paycheck, constant fights are

A Haven for Pets By Elizabeth Putfark Photos by Andrew Stanfill

If you were to drive by 501 SE 2nd Street in Gainesville on a Tuesday morning, you might wonder what all the ruckus is about. That’s because every Tuesday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Gainesville locals with demonstrable need line up outside the St. Francis Pet Care volunteer clinic to receive free veterinary care for their four-legged friends. 24 Flourish Magazine | September/2015

A Hope for Community

St. Francis Pet Care gives back to local pets, families in need

“I usually pull up at 8 AM and there are people all up and down the sidewalk,” says Chris Machen, one of St. Francis’s founding members. “We start putting out numbers at 8:15, and it’s firstcome-first-serve from there.”

Despite a sometimes lengthy wait, homeless, low income, disabled and veteran pet owners are more than willing to put in the time. While an average trip to a vet clinic starts out around $100, at St. Francis, animals are

gifts from individuals and institutions. The clinic’s staff and volunteer veterinarians use those monetary gifts and supplies to treat over 1,000 pets a year – pets who would otherwise receive no treatment at all.

Yet for volunteers who commit to giving weekly of their time, it’s the dedication of the pet owners that keeps everyone’s spirits high.

The clinic started in 2007 as the result of an often repeated conversation between two friends who rode horses together – Machen and veterinarian Dale Kaplan-Stein. When they first rode out, Kaplan-Stein “When I first started volunteering, my philosophy mentioned a homeless man she regularly saw on an exit off I-75 who was that if you can’t take kept a dog with him. Knowing that care of yourself, why would you have a pet?” admits Alexis such a pet couldn’t possibly be receiving adequate health care, the Rothman, who began helping out at St. Francis last August. “But two began to speculate about ways they could combine efforts and since I’ve been here, I’ve learned garner support in in order to care for that the pet is often the only the pets of local people in need. companion people have, and they’re incredible devoted to them. So my “I’ve always felt that a little of this or a thought process totally changed.” little of that would really improve the life of these animals on the other side, and that would then improve the life of their owners,” says founding vet Kaplan-Stein. “I think as we teach the owners about pet health, it’s also teaching them how to be healthier individually. This is not an enabling program – this is about support and education. Machen agrees, and describes being regularly amazed by the lengths people will go to in order to take care of their animals. “Just last week a man came in with a 50 pound dog that he’d put on a little mattress in a grocery cart. He pushed that dog five miles to get him here,” she exclaims. “I just can’t get over it!”

“I honestly believe that as pets bring us together and break down barriers, it makes us a better community – a healthier community.”

Kaplan-Stein suggests that those who want to help consider making a financial contribution to the clinic, where it’s guaranteed to be put to use in service of local pets and their owners. Thanks to the clinic’s volunteer work force and multiple grants, one $200 donation could cover the care and treatment of a single pet for an entire year. St. Francis is in the process of relocating to a new lot just down the street from their current location. “We’re about ready to break out of here!” laughs Machen, gesturing towards their small converted corner apartment, where even the bathroom and storage closet double as an exam rooms. Wherever they are, the volunteer staff and vets at St. Francis Pet Care are sure to be making a difference – in the lives of pets, and the health and welfare of our community. Bullying

Is your child a victim?

For every child eager to reconnect with classmates and meet new friends with the start of a school year, there’s another dreading the day she’ll have to once again face the taunting, teasing and turmoil that await her the moment she steps off the school bus.

She may try to put on a brave face one more time ... but, before long, even that requires too much effort, too much courage.

Most victims won’t share their pain. They’ll bury it and, eventually, it manifests in frightening ways. Selfharm. Suicide.

She tries her best hide her pain ... from her bullies, from her teachers, from her parents.

This is serious.

But what if she’s your child? Would you know what to do? Would you even know her painful secret?

Again I ask, would you know if your child is a victim of bullying?

Now is the time to start paying attention. Watch for common warning signs, including: Though she may feel as though no • Withdrawing from friend groups one could possibly understand the • Losing interest in activities once torment she endures, bullying is, sadly, considered important or exciting far too common. It remains a very real without replacing them with problem in our schools, and we – as new activities parents, aunts, uncles and neighbors • Physical bruises, cuts or scratches – must be aware of its presence, • Wearing long pants and longcognizant of its consequences. sleeved shirts in warm weather • Dropping out of clubs or teams Despite hefty campaigns, speeches without explanation and zero-tolerance stances • Increased crying throughout our country, bullying • Increased isolation steals the self-esteem, self-worth • Giving away possessions previously and identity of children every day. considered very important 26 Flourish Magazine | September/2015

If you think your child may be a victim, don’t brush it off. Talk with your child. Engage the community of support around you. Call us at Children's Home Society of Florida. We can be your child’s advocate. We can provide counseling – in the comfort of your home or even at your child’s school – and help your child work through the pain inflicted through bullying. We’ll even meet with the school on behalf of your child. Contact Children’s Home Society of Florida for bullying resources at (352) 334-0955 or helpfloridachildren@chsfl.org.

As technology now provides even more opportunities for bullies to belittle their victims, the taunting reaches far beyond the schoolyard. If it reaches your child, you don’t have to handle it alone. You have an entire community ready to help. Jennifer Anchors is executive director of Children’s Home Society of Florida, serving children and families throughout the Mid-Florida region.

A Weekend with:

Old College

You never know what to expect when old college buddies come into town. No matter how much your social media presence has matured, as a group, you might find yourselves reverting to old habits – the kind of habits only a 21-year-old metabolism can support.

Buddies

Keep everyone on track with changing scenery and energetic activities, particularly during daytime hours. That way, you’ll save the babysitter an uncomfortably late night, and yourselves some embarrassing Facebook tags that you might regret on Monday.

Day One You’ve probably got enough catching up to do to keep things rolling for a while, so find an outdoor space for a light cocktail hour. Have dinner ready to pop in the oven as soon as your guests arrive, and dine alfresco to keep the mood light. When conversation runs dry, move the party to Rockey’s Dueling Piano Bar, where the live and eccentric entertainment will give everyone something to chat about.

Day Two Get ready for a long day with a big breakfast at The Flying Biscuit Café, but don’t be surprised if there’s a wait. Stroll through the Fresh Market next door to kill time and reflect on all the things you didn’t eat in school, and others that may have contributed to that freshman fifteen. 30 Flourish Magazine | September/2015

You know you’re going to end up at a bar later tonight, so get your rowdy friends a little tired first. Head to The Devils Millhopper, a geological State Park just outside of town where you can hike down to see a giant sinkhole filled with a dense, rainforest-like plant life. The trek up and down the stairs will have everyone ready to take a seat by afternoon, and what better place than at Alfred A. McKethan Stadium, where the Gators play baseball under the springtime sun. Reminisce on the good ole’ days of watching games from the student section while indulging in a ballpark hot dog smeared with mustard and onions. By the seventh inning stretch you’ll be ready for an easy driving tour around town (napping allowed!) followed by dinner at Loosey’s Downtown Gainesville, where you’ll find great food, open mic nights and a tap room for that one buddy in the bunch who just won’t quit.

Day Three Start your final day together by making breakfast together as a group. Be ready with

potatoes for frying, biscuits for baking, eggs for cracking and plenty of fruit to counter the extra carbs consumed the day before. Friends can build their own omelettes as you stretch out those morning hours. Once everyone’s energy is stirring again, head to the University of Florida campus for final reflections on your own college years. Look for your group’s doppelgangers in the faces of disheveled students wandering back to the dorms, or flocking to the library to cram for a Monday morning test. Choose from the variety of lunch options in the Reitz Union before heading to the Samuel P Harn Museum of Art. Soak in the culture you might have missed as undergrads as you stroll through the collections and seasonal exhibits. No college party is complete without a parting gift, so don’t let your friends leave without an alumni tee shirt, koozie or other inexpensive piece of memorabilia. Take a final picture together sporting your collegiate gear, and promise, as always, not to drink so much next time.

Podcasting 101 The Basics

Podcasts are a kind a digital media file (usually audio, sometimes video), which come out in a series for the entertainment and education of listeners. You can download them through a number of different podcatchers (including iTunes and Podfy) each of which updates your content periodically to keep you up to speed on recent episodes from your favorite shows.

Why it’s cool Podcasting provides an alternative to traditional radio and TV, each of which carry large budgets and long lists of clients that restrict the kinds of content they provide. Podcasts, on the other hand, are super low budget, which allows many more viewpoints to be voiced.

Best of all, you can find just about anything that interests you being discussed by everyone from college students to industry leaders.

Why now More than ever, audiences want to be in charge of the content they consume. They want to hear it on their watch, select it based on their interests and have access to it anywhere. Podcasts allow listeners and viewers the freedom and mobility they crave, while also catering to diverse viewpoints through targeted, small-scale productions. Even better, podcasts foster community by allowing enthused and enraged listeners to share their feedback instantly, and expect a reply.

How do I start? Download a podcatcher that fits your laptop, pc or mobile device then browse for your interests – sports, news, comedy, science, psychology, stories, arts and culture. Then, just start listening! You may soon find yourself inspired to start a podcast of your own, either as an individual or an entrepreneur. Many companies are now embracing podcasts as a way to appeal to customers and advertisers in a targeted, individualized way.

However you use them, it looks like Podcasts are here to stay. With personalized content to entertain and intrigue, we promise you’ll be hooked in no time!

Body Image? By Isabella Crane

GET OFF THE INTERNET!

It’s no secret everyone worries about their looks – men, women, teens and young adults. We obsess over our size, our clothes and the way we look in the mirror, and wonder why it never fulfills our own expectations for beauty, let alone the expectations of others.

No matter who you blame for your insecurities (mom, dad or that bully in middle school), studies show that at least one common cause has us all primping towards impossible ideals: the internet. Just by answering the following three questions, you’ll probably agree that web browsing has a greater influence on your concept of beauty than anyone in your social circle – even you!

How Big is your Network? Do you remember the expression “small town beauty”? Whoever she was in your home town, she’s lost in the age of online communities, which put the girl-next-door in awkward juxtaposition to top-paid models and actresses. In fact, a 2014 study found that people who live in-sync with the internet for the majority of their lives had markedly different (and more exacting) ideas about ttractiveness than those who live off the grid. In order to isolate online browsing as a cause, researchers from the University of Saint Andrews took their study to Nigeria, where socioeconomic differences are stark but the culture constant. They showed participants a series of images adjusted relative to Western standards of beauty – that is, ranging from feminine/thin to masculine/average for women, and feminine/soft to masculine/robust for 42 Flourish Magazine | September/2015

men. They found that those with regular internet access consistently preferred images that conformed to mass-media’s beauty ideals (skinny, soft-featured women, and masculine, strong-looking men), but that those without online influence chose more “average” beauties across the board – that is, healthy weight and non-specific gender determination.

How Real are Your Expectations? One side effect of regular media bombardment is that we lose track of the beauty in everyday people and places around us. As you look in the mirror, what are you expecting to see? Is it

flawless skin? Perfect teeth? A narrower waist? Shapelier arms and legs? Chances are, you’re not only comparing yourself to people who have made their living off their unique bone structure and build, but also against photoshopped and enhanced images of those individuals. By constantly placing yourself in comparison with unrealistic standards of beauty, you may find it impossible to love all the unique features about yourself, or even the person you’re dating, and instead maintain a negative attitude towards your appearance than can wreak havoc on your self-esteem.

Are You Ready to be Positive? While many celebrities and fashion icons continue to push for more diversity in the world of advertising, fashion and media, it’s up to us to find ways to focus on the beauty of the people around us more, and on the impossible beauty of photo-shopped images and professional models less.

fashionistas are giving out free knowledge and advice to everyday women (who aren’t necessarily shopping for a size two). Then, when you decide on a wardrobe update, go in-store instead of online. You’ll see store workers modeling the shop’s wares in real, approachable fashion, and get styling tips tailor-made to your body shape.

An easy way to foster some distance between yourself and mass-produced standards of beauty is to change the way you seek fashion advice. Instead of browsing online catalogues and high-profile fashion sites, get involved in the blogosphere, where real-life

Above all, be aware of the media outlets you’re taking in and how they’re influencing the way you see yourself in the mirror. Look for beauty in your friends and family instead of on-screen, and soon you’ll be seeing beauty in a whole new light!

’ s i v a r T e Home i b Deb se To Hou

Table By Debbie Travis

Dear Debbie: We are looking at a big move from a house to a newly built condominium and are struggling with design ideas for the combination living/dining/kitchen area. We enjoy cooking and would still like to have a few friends for dinner. – Jacky

Dear Jacky: This is your new home, so take the time to arrange the space to fit what you love and how you enjoy entertaining. Dining is more relaxed today, and you can utilize table and seating options in your new space that ensure you and your guests feel pampered and special. You don’t require a large kitchen to enjoy cooking if both you and the space are well organized. Think about the output that short-order chefs handle, or the mouthwatering meals that are stirred up in a tiny-perfect boat galley. You might have to pare down on extra appliances that take up a lot of room; the same for dishes. Be judicious about your requirements now that you will be cooking on a smaller scale, and make the most of available counter space for preparation. 40 Flourish Magazine | September/2015

Many condos have a large, pass-through or window-style opening to the dining area, which is a clever way to keep guests out of the small kitchen area while you are preparing food, and also presents a practical solution for seating. Instead of the traditional dining table, why not opt for a custom-built counter table that sits flush to the wall as shown here in Neil Kelly Design’s wellplanned condo space, www.neilkelly.com. This plan includes storage under the counter for wine, and from the kitchen side, a large cabinet for pantry items. (By omitting the wine storage there would be leg room for a fourth chair.) The slightly oval shape allows for angled views that keep everyone in touch with each other, and also facing open space rather than a wall. The lighting was planned so that pendants focus on the counter, sleek and simple. Plan to seat four to six people comfortably in the living-room space. Select love seats and small occasional chairs to make up the grouping. Ottomans work well as extra seating, storage and tabletops. If the furniture is streamlined, you won’t feel crowded. Take advantage of ceiling and wall lighting to free up more space.

Talk

Creative designs for small spaces take the sting out of downsizing and allow you to hang onto what you love.

Dear Debbie: I’m wondering if I can mix two large armless, wingback dining-room chairs with two smaller armed dining chairs around the table. There is a difference in height of 10 inches. Thank you. – Cindy

Dear Cindy: Mixing and matching dining chairs is a very popular solution for seating today. In fact, it gives you the advantage of using chairs in both living and dining areas. Your arrangement will work if you place the larger chairs at the ends of the table and the smaller at the sides. The size of the chair backs can vary: however, be sure that the seats are the same height so that everyone is sitting at the same level. Choose a fabric or design for the chairs that links them in some way – either by color or motif – to contribute to a cohesive style throughout your rooms. Keep in mind that dining chairs should offer good, solid support; it is difficult and uncomfortable to eat in a lounge chair.

What Your

Humor Says to Others Does weakness betrays strength? According to researchers at the University of New Mexico, making fun of yourself is a kind of “costly signaling” – a display of weakness in order to signify your overall strength. So for a high-status man in the office or on a date, flashing a soft spot or two functions as an endearing sign of comradery. Similarly, teachers and professors who offer self-effacing yarns find greater favor with students than those who maintain a façade of complete authority. Or belies it? Yet the results change for others whose gender, salary or age make their status more questionable. A study published in the Journal of

One of the best ways to lighten the mood in a business setting is to offer up a bit of self-deprecating humor – a laughing nod to your own shortcomings to put everyone on ease about their own. Unfortunately for women, studies show that only men with secure upper-level status are able to successfully pull of personal jabs aimed at themselves.

Evolutionary Psychology found that lower status men were less attractive to women when they made fun of themselves in conversation. Things get even worse for women in the office, according to findings by Ashton University. Based on their research, 70 percent of female senior professionals who poke fun at themselves end up being seen in a negative light by their coworkers. It seems that instead of appearing humble, women, historically excluded from leadership roles, accidentally call their authority into question with self-effacing remarks. Similarly, labeled as the “fairer sex,” women are more likely to be misinterpreted by

audiences who read their personal jests as evidence of true self-doubt, and thus feel obliged to reassure them.

You decide. So does this mean you need to permanently change the way you joke? Absolutely not. Your sense of humor is part of what makes you unique, however, it’s also important to note how you’re perceived. If your boss, coworkers or family seem uncomfortable amongst jokes made at your own expense, dial back the self-effacement for their sake. Once they stop worrying about your actual confidence level, they’ll be able to see the funny side of all your humble quirks and quips. Flourish Magazine | September/2015 41

How to Choose an Implant Dentist By Dr. Arthur Mowery

Well known as an accomplished cosmetic dentist and former University of Florida instructor, Dr. Art Mowery also places hundreds of dental implants each year. A recent increase in dental implant marketing has prompted many to ask how does one chooses the right dentist to place single-tooth implants or implant secured dentures.

Experience—is

certainly one of the most important factors in choosing a dentist. In the long run, experience means the professional is able to draw from his or her knowledge to assess the person, the procedure, the materials and the situation to create the optimal outcome. When it comes to performing dental implant surgery, there are many variables to consider including the type, length, thickness, and durability of the implant itself. Then there’s the patient. How much bone is there to work with? Are the sinus cavities close to where the implant will be located? How will the doctor make the implant look natural with the rest of the patient’s teeth? What are the patient’s expectations? These are but a few considerations for the

implant dentist. Experience is the great teacher, and great results are generally associated with great experience.

Before and After Photos—one of the first things to notice about most dental marketing is that they almost always contain ‘stock photography’. This means the photos were purchased or have come from a dental vendor of someone else’s work; or they just use happy smiling face photos. This may be fine for marketing, however, when meeting with a dental office during a dental implant consultation you should ask to see before and after photos of the dentist’s actual work and patients. You should ask to see specific examples of the procedure being recommended to you so you can see the level of experience (how many case

photos do they have), and do the end results look natural?

Part-time versus Full-time—another trend in dentistry is part-time doctors. These doctors are usually trying to figure out their career path (which practice do they like or likes them), or do not want the responsibility of owning their own office. It’s not unusual for these practice associates to leave the office they are part-timers in for a full-time position, obviously leaving their patients behind, sometimes in the middle of treatment. It may be prudent to ask how long an associate or part-time doctor has been in the practice and whether they can guarantee they will be there for you in the long run. Again, implant dentistry is complex; I mean we are replacing a body part! It could be very important months or years down the road to see the same doctor in cases of dental implant maintenance or if you have a complication.

Type of Implants—this

may be a difficult piece of the puzzle to understand and get answers too. I have seen some crazy stuff used as implants. The worst cases I have seen are from countries that solicit dental/medical tourism. The best advice here is to ask what name-brand of implants the doctor uses so you can do a little research about them. Is it a generic copy of a name brand implant? I suggest implants made by a large experienced company so that in the case of an implant failure (less likely with an established company), they are guaranteed and improved replacement

parts are easily found. I use BioHorizon or Strauman dental implants.

One Comprehensive Doctor—it

is common practice for general dentists to refer their patients to a prosthodontist to place a dental implant; usually in another office. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this practice. However, some dentists have continued their dental education well beyond their original training so they can help their patients with most any dental necessity. The advantages to having one comprehensive doctor is that doctor knows you and your dental past. You go to one office and one doctor for all your dentistry needs. You won’t need to see multiple doctors in multiple locations. This can reduce your number of visits and speed up treatment time.

Sedation—whether

you have a fear of the dentist or want to be more relaxed during surgery, sedation is a wonderful option. Not all dental practices offer sedation and very few offer IV sedation. Again, the experience of the doctor will help determine your experience in the chair. A qualified IV sedation dentist could actually make your dental implant surgery the best dental visit you’ve ever had. Reprogram

As a part of the YOU+ healthy lifestyle coaching platform, Steven Willey’s new book is ready to transform the way you think about health.

Your Life: Bioscience for a Healthier You

Going against the grain of fad diets and quick fixes, Reprogram Your Life offers a combined approach to health that balances up-todate findings from reliable clinical studies with practical advice based on what actually works. Willey begins with the assumption that lack of effort or desire is not the reason most people fail to achieve their health and fitness goals. In fact, he suggests that misdirected and unguided efforts, egged on by the million dollar marketing campaigns lead by every new miracle pill or powder on the block, are far more debilitating than anything we might call “laziness.”

exercise programs, Willey explains why what we’ve been doing so far – crash dieting, eliminating fats, counting calories and blaming ourselves, among other reasons – isn’t working. Then, he explains how all that can change.

“Today we’re faced with so much information about exercise and fitness that we can become paralyzed by choice,” he explains in his introduction.

Reprogram Your Life, in combination with the innovative YOU+ app and website, is designed to work from the root. Its goal is to help improve not just the way we diet and exercise but more importantly our body’s natural fueling process – that is, by improving our insulin efficiency and lowering insulin resistance. As a result, our bodies are able to send and interpret messages (think: I’m hungry, or I need to rest) at the right time, making healthy living easier rather than harder over the long run.

So before going into the specifics of how we should change our diet and

“It’s an integrated approach to health, well-being, and fitness, anchored in

significant scientific research and supported by serious medical expertise,” writes Willey, who after decades of helping patients turn their lives around is now committed to spreading the word even further. The YOU+ app approach to health asks readers to reprogram the way they think about their food, diet and exercise and how the

three affect their bodies, and promises that they will start to look better and feel better as a result. Best of all, Willey firmly declares that you can do all that without giving up your life, sanity, or the foods you love. What you’re

Not Cleaning, and should be

By Elizabeth Putfark

It’s hard enough to make time to deep-clean, let alone time to improve how you do it. Take the next five minutes to learn about four easily missed but easily added necessities to bring to your cleaning routine.

Your Washing Machine: Washers should be cleaned at least twice a year to avoid buildup of hair, cleaning products and grime. Wipe out the entire drum and tub using white vinegar and cloth, and don’t forget to clean out the detergent and bleach compartment.

Bedroom Pillows: Most non-feather, non-foam pillows can be washed in your machine. The pillows we sleep on are magnets for all manner of germs and deserve regular washing.

Hometalk.com recommends drying washed pillows on low with towels and a tennis ball or two to achieve maximum fluffiness.

Your Refrigerator: It’s easy to forget the area above and below our home coolers, but those spots are particularly deft at trapping dust and dander. Take the time to roll your refrigerate out for an all-over sprucing at least twice a year, paying close attention to the top, bottom and coils in the back.

Air Vents: Don’t just replace – refresh! Use the roller tool attachment on your vacuum’s wand to get in the crevices of your household lint-trap.

Easy Ways For Busy Moms to Live A Healthier Life By Alisa Wyatt, Pilatesology.com

Living a healthier life is a conscious choice, but moms are busy and it can be tough for them to juggle all of their responsibilities each day. Yet with a proper plan, living healthy is attainable – and even fun! Check out these 10 easy ways for living a healthier life: Make a meal plan. Families who are busy tend to eat on the go. Grab-and-go eating makes it tough to maintain health goals, so sit down each week to make a meal plan. Shop with a list and stick to it. Also, spend some time over the weekend doing prep work so cooking dinner doesn’t eat up all of your family time each evening. Drink plenty of water. Our bodies need water to maintain a healthy temperature, to stay properly hydrated to keep your system regular. Water washes toxins out of our bodies and helps us maintain good health, so skip sugary drinks and incorporate infused water into your daily diet. Adding some fresh berries, lemon or cucumber will also make water more refreshing. 30 Flourish Magazine | September/2015

Unplug from technology and keep moving. Kids follow their parents’ example when it comes to watching television, playing video games and exercising. Limit the amount of time you and your family participate in technology-based activities. Plan time each day to be active with your kids – even 30 minutes a day makes a difference. Take time to relax. Find time each week to unwind and refresh. Read a book, take a long bath or go for a hike. It’s important to refuel your energy level to maintain proper mental health. Taking care of yourself is even more vital when you have a family to care for.

Find time for fun! Enjoy a hobby that enables you to grow, such as taking a creative writing class, learning to paint or taking a pottery class. It’s important to participate in activities that enhance your quality of life. Get fit on the go. It’s easy and fast to hop in the car, but if you're going to a destination that's close to home, choose a healthier alternative. Bike or walk with the kids to school instead of driving, as it’s good for you and good for them. If you need to drive the little ones to soccer practice, bring along your running shoes or scope out the nearest gym. This will enable you to get the most out of that hour by getting in a quick workout yourself.

For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness. Ralph Waldo Emerson

Put your workouts in your calendar! So much of our life is scheduled (work, kids’ activities, social events, etc.) that our bodies and minds are trained to live by that schedule. If you wait for free time to magically appear in your schedule so you can exercise, it likely won’t happen.

Fitness to fit your life. Know yourself and don’t sign up for a class at the gym if you have to turn your life upside-down to get there. The added stress will be de-motivating and the result may be that you won’t go at all. If the schedule is an issue, choose workouts that offer some flexibility. Power walking, jogging or online video workouts are good options that you can do anytime and anywhere. You won't be locked into a specific class time or length.

Life is filled with interruptions, so make fitness and health a priority by starting your day with some type of activity. Listen to energetic music on your iPod and go

Two is better than one! Find a workout buddy, as having an accountability partner will help keep you on track. Reporting your activity and progress to a friend can make a real difference to your commitment level and you can motivate one another to stick with your routines. Explore! Try out some different activities to discover what you enjoy. Also, don’t give up if the first classes or sports you try aren’t a good fit. All your friends might be signing up for yoga, but you might find out that you prefer a team sport, tennis, dancing or pilates. The opportunities are endless. The key is not to sign up for the latest fad, but to figure out what makes you feel good mentally and physically. Folks are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be. Abraham Lincoln

for a walk before the kids get up, as it will release endorphins that will enhance your mood and boost your energy level. Make sure to also fuel your body with nutrient-dense foods to keep your metabolism working throughout the day. You’ll see that you will feel better and have more energy for your busy life as a mom!

In-Home Influence Gender differences in the workforce are well documented – women tend to work in lower-paid fields and low-level positions, where men dominate in top-dollar jobs and industries. We know how these trends started, but how do they get perpetuated? Scientists at the University of British Columbia looked beyond discrimination in the workplace itself and into the home, hoping to discover how early childhood experiences influence the future career paths of women. Songs By Isabelle Crane

Your Kids Won’t Stop Playing

Do you know a song that gets on everybody’s nerves? Jennifer Lee, director of the instant Disney classic, Frozen, recently apologized to parents for the undying fanaticism her film’s songs have inspired – including the hours upon hours of play time of Academy Award Winning title track, “Let it Go.” While she used to get compliments from families on the song’s popularity, she told The Hollywood Reporter that now she says “I’m sorry!” to parents she meets whose kids won’t take Elsa’s ballads off repeat. Yet hers is not the only soundtrack to inspire unending sing-along sessions. If you’re the parent of a child between ages four and 14, we bet you know all the words to a least a few of these popular tunes – and really wish you didn’t!

The Hamster Dance Song, Hampton the Hamster You thought it would go away six years ago, but this funky techno song just won’t get off the kid’s charts.

Happy, Pharrell Williams Once, and this song is great. Twice, it’s pretty good. Three times, it’s stuck in your head and you’re afraid you’ll never feel “happy” again.

Nyan Cat If you’re children missed this YouTube sensation, hide this magazine now! If they didn’t, we’re sorry for the hours of agony that you must endure on every road trip listening to “Nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan” ad infinitum.

All About That Bass, Meghan Trainor Admit it – the chorus of this bubblegum pop song gets stuck in your head after just one listen.

Roar, Katy Perry The unmistakable beat of this hit number never gets old to preteen daughters, but boy does it ever to those over the age of 13.

Baby Monkey, Parry Gripp Did you know there’s a 10 hour version of this on YouTube? We hope you didn’t …

Shake it Off, Taylor Swift

Gangnam Style, PSY

The non-stop energy of this power-girl dance hit will have your head spinning after two repeats. If only you could shake it out of your head later!

The best way to get through this one is to join in the dancing. It’ll go by faster that way.

Blank Space, Taylor Swift

Friday, Rebecca Black This song seems to be on the way out, and good riddance. If your girls threaten to bring it back, encourage them to write their own song about a daily routine instead!

It’s no surprise that Swifty makes the list twice. Your kids are probably practicing their click/wink for the chorus of Taylor’s newest release, which must have been adorable … for the first two hours.

Tailgating Games

the Whole Family Can Enjoy Nothing brings a family together faster than a tailgating lot. Then again, nothing can so quickly tear it apart. Fowling Think football plus bowling with a little horseshoes thrown in (and yes, it’s every bit as awesome as that sounds). Two players or teams set up 10 bowling pins each at opposite ends of a designated pitch. The goal is to then use a football to knock down all your opponent’s pins before they knock The answer is simple: competition. down yours. This newly invented You’re already in the competitive spirit, game is particularly fun for families as so put those feelings to good use by you can determine throwing distance setting up a fun and easy tournament on an individual basis and keep things that’s appropriate for all ages! competitive across all ages. While your teens are preoccupied making eyes at college coeds, your little ones are quickly becoming hot, tired and bored. So how do you keep them entertained without sacrificing the sanctity of the game (that is, breaking out the technology and letting them plug in, and check out)?

course, there are official rules and regulations, but for the sake of tailgating you’ll have just as much fun with a semi-disposable version. Earn points by tossing washers towards your opponent’s box, located approximately 10 paces from your own. Ringers earn you three points, while any washer inside the box earns one. First to 21 wins.

Washers You probably have the materials for this humble game lying around your garage right now. All you need to play are two short, square boxes of identical size (one cardboard box cut in half will work), two slices of 5-inch wide PVC pipe, and a handful of the largest washers you can find. 500 Practice your receiving skills with a game of 500. Everyone assembles in a pack or group and waits for the ball to be hurled into the air, at which point there’s a free-for-all to catch it. Catching the ball in the air is 100 points, and after a single bounce is 50. The first to 500 points wins and secures the role of QB for the next round. (Hint: There’s no such thing as pass interference, though you might need to improvise a set of rules to keep things convivial between siblings and neighbors, who will soon be joining in!) Cornhole An oldie but a goodie, this game promises low exertion entertainment that all ages can enjoy. All you need are two rectangles of plywood angled upwards (12 inches at the back) with a hole in the center and two sets of different colored bean bags. Playing one-on-one or in teams, you score one point for every sandbag that lands on the board and three for every one you sink. First to 21 wins.

easily assembled on sight to give even your least athletic kids a target, all while adding a little fan flare to your décor. Make things interesting by awarding points for every “completed” pass. We promise you’ll have every kid and dad in the vicinity lining up to take shots.

Spikeball You will need to purchase some equipment for this, but you’ll likely find your family wants to reuse it again and again. To play, teams of two oppose each other across an ankleheight, miniature trampoline net. The game is structured like a volleyball match, only instead of sending the ball over the net, you spike it towards the other team on the mini trampoline. Every spike that’s unreturned after three volleys or less earns your team a point.

Tackle Buddy Show your team spirit with a Tackle Buddy: an inflatable target for any variety of attack. Punch it, wrestle it and knock it down with Frisbees and Nerf footballs. However you assault this forgiving inflatable, it’s (almost) certain to bounce back up, ready for more action. (Hint: take along a pool toy patch-up kit, just in case!) Ladder Toss This straightforward game is harder than it looks. Each team or individual gets a set of plastic balls linked two-by-two by a rope. The goal is to sling each pair toward a three-wrung ladder placed at an age appropriate distance and hook the rope around it. The highest wrung is three points, the middle two and the lowest three. It might take some practice, but soon you’ll all get the hang of it.

Sports Catchers You’ve seen these before, but you might not have thought of their use at a tailgate until your adolescent’s spirals started landing in neighboring lots. You got the double line, the plus sign, the big “Yes!” from your doctor. There’s so much to do, change, buy and research, so where do you start? Pick up prenatal vitamins. You really can’t start taking these too early. Prenatal Vitamins – which are high in folic acid, iodine, iron and calcium – help your baby’s growth, and for many women keeping a vitamin regiment after the first positive test eases the pain of the first trimester.

Examine your diet. The first 12 weeks are hugely important to your baby’s development, so take stock of your eating habits as they exist right now. Find out which of your splurges are okay in moderation and which one you need to change right away.

Stick with exercise. No doubt you’ll be feeling some changes in your body, but exercise can keep you mentally and physically healthy as you enter your first trimester. If you don’t usually work out, the first weeks are crucial for easing your body into a workout routine. Try cycling or walking in 15 to 20 minute stretches, and consult with your doctor about an exercise regimen. 22 Flourish Magazine | September/2015

Pregnant! (Now What?) Capture the moment. Before your belly starts to swell, embrace the excitement with the flash of a camera. You’ll enjoy having before and after pictures later!

Tell who you want. The old adage says wait until 14 weeks, but having emotional support from your family and closest friends will help you stay mentally healthy and relaxed, regardless of your term’s development. What do you think has been the key to your success so far? I have a very supportive family. I had to do it – I had to move to LA, I had to audition – but if it were not for my family I would not have been comfortable enough and confident enough to make such bold choices. I’m very grateful for the foundation that I have, and that my family has been there through and through in my life. What’s been your biggest challenge? Balancing a career and a love life! I’ve always wanted to have marriage and just a thriving, flourishing relationship. But especially at the beginning, it was hard trying to pursue such a tough business that had so many people competing in it. And then once things started to happen, the challenge became that when I meet someone, and they see this success that I’ve worked so hard to get, they don’t see a place for them. I think it’s hard to have both a thriving career and a thriving relationship – most of the time in my life it’s been one or the other. If you had to name one thing, what do you think Hollywood is missing today that you’d like to see more of? Families. I think if Hollywood was more supportive of trying to make both family and career important, that would be a good thing. Also, more people creating films – more actors being proactive in creating work versus actors auditioning only. I’d like to see more independent stuff just to keep the amount of work available bigger and to keep our creative juices flowing. What’s the best advice you received at the start of your career, and what might you add to that now? Stay true to yourself. Don’t follow the crowd and continue to be confident in your uniqueness. And I’ve stuck with that, because many times, as with anything, stuff comes in trends. So I would say try not to tailor yourself to what’s trendy but just be confident that who you are is going to be “in” at some point. If you try to convert yourself to what’s in, it’s not going to be true. You’re not going to be your highest, best self. If you wait and keep at it, your time is going to come. What’s up next for you? I just want to do bigger and longer projects, and I also want to make and produce my own films. I definitely want to do more film. I’d like to do a period piece, an action film, and you know, just continue to grow. I would love to do a Broadway show even though I’m not a singer! I just want to continue being a working actress and being able to try my hand at different things. I just love the business – I just love working! 14 Flourish Magazine | September/2015

How hobbies help According to psychologists at San Francisco State University, job performance soars when workers spend time outside of work investing in creative outlets. In the 440 participant study, people who spent time working on creative projects outside of work showed improvements in problem-solving and empathy while on the job.

Creativity can involve anything from playing sports and video games to fashioning quilts and model airplanes. The key is to find something that engages your intellect and attention more thoroughly than lingering thoughts of work.

Finding your niche Depending on your personality type you may be attracted to different after-work endeavors. The following four personality types were identified by educational psychologist David Keirsey, and can help you decide on which hobby is right for you.

For the Love of the Craft

An interview with “For Better or Worse” star Kiki Haynes

Best known as the hilarious Keisha Jones on Tyler Perry’s

For Better or Worse, Kiki Haynes has been in love with her craft since middle school. Her relentless pursuit has led her to multiple roles on the small and silver screen, culminating in two hot new releases this year, My First Love and Message from a Mistress.

When she’s not busy in the studio, she’s hard at work giving back to her community through organizations like “HerShe,” which prepares girls in foster care for successful transitions into the adult work. Here, the NAACP Image Award nominee shares more about her steady rise to fame, and the support system that’s seen her through it.

Tell me about how you decided to become an actress. A part of it is because both of my parents are artists. I think growing up seeing both my parents on stage was

inspiring for me and made think I could do the same thing. I loved movies, and I found myself reenacting the scenes. I eventually confirmed that curiosity for the first time in sixth grade when I joined the drama club. I won this contest for acting and the prize was a trip to see a live screening of The Cosby Show. At that time The Cosby Show was everything, all my friends and I watched, so to see these actors live on stage, everything in me was like, I can do that! I want to do that!

In My First Love, I play a coworker of a gentleman who has recently decided to divorce his wife. I’ve always had a crush on him, so it’s a love story about timing and opportunity.

Parents and mentors of teens and tweens: this is an interview you don’t want to miss. Vivian Lamolli, the singing and dancing star of Hulu’s East Los High, has pushed through all the uncertainties of youth and arrived on the other side, confident and ready to empower the next generation behind her. This National Spanish History month, the vivacious Latina starlet shares what she’s learned about the struggles of youth, both through her own coming-of-age and through her return to high school life in East Los High. For this former Gator, the solution to teenage angst is simple, but still in high demand: “support, support, support!”

An Interview with Vivian Lamolli

Interview by Elizabeth Putfark 8

Flourish Magazine | September/2015

A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government. Edward Abbey

How did you get started in acting? Ever since I was little I’ve always been a performer. Singing, dancing acting – I fell into all of it at a really young age. I was always putting on little shows for my family and their friends. It’s weird though, because then I went to high school and suddenly decided I wanted to be a lawyer! So going into college I kind of followed that path, but then I realized where my heart and dreams were. At the end of the day I switched majors and continued on that track. That’s when I started consistently studying at the conservatory at the University of Florida.

Not every performer goes to college before pursuing their Hollywood dreams. What do you think has your degree done for you? I’ve actually been reflecting on that a lot recently. I find that you go back to those studies often when you’re working on projects. I learned a lot while I studied at UF. They’re were certain professors who changed the way I view performing arts and the way I view acting. Because with acting, you’re basically just breathing life into another character, another human being. So I think it made a huge impact on my life to have that time to really study and hone my skill – time to take dance classes and just know that I had it all right and tight!

Tell me about East Los High. We’re now filming the 3rd season and I’m super excited to be jumping right into it. I go to East Los High, and it’s awesome! I love all

of my cast mates. We’re all really able to step into a high schooler’s shoes and go through all the things that high schoolers deal with every day. Tough things: like bullying, going through difficult studies, having issues with our sexuality and our age and what’s appropriate and just how you feel. It’s all about just finding out who you are, and I think that’s the most important thing for youth – empowering them and letting them know that we’re always willing to let them be who they are in high school.

What’s it like working on an all Latino cast? Having an all Latino cast makes it pretty feisty on the set, I’m not going to lie! All of us have those big personalities! It’s an awesome thing though because we’re all speaking English and people can really relate to us and what we go through. That’s had such a huge impact on my life, because I am Puerto Rican, and Cuban and Italian. It’s so beautiful to be able to play my own nationality on camera. I feel really proud of my background – who I am and where I come from. It just lifts you that much more in confidence letting everyone know, I am Latina, and I am a strong woman!

Tell me about your move from Florida to Los Angeles. What’s that been like? I grew up in Miami. I was actually born on Coconut Grove, and my mom loves telling that story. Her water broke around the ritziest area and she’s always like, “You were born in the nice area!” It’s cool because I feel like I’ve always had that taste of Florida, even when we moved around (and we’re a military family so that happened quite a bit). I lived in central Florida for a lot of my life. Now that I’m in LA, I still really exude being a Floridian! Everyone’s always like “you’re definitely not from here!” And it’s really nice to have that East Coast vibe.

How do you see yourself influencing young women and young Latinos, both through your social media presence and your role on the show? I think just being able to let everyone know who I am and where I come from is the biggest part of it all. Because once they found that out, they’re more comfortable being themselves as well – to embrace their nationality and their culture. I think that it

gives them an even stronger voice in the Latino community – to let them know that we do have a presence in the media industry and it’s only getting bigger, only getting better! Right now, it’s wonderful to be able to put out that Cuba is having better relations with the U.S. and that politically, it’s okay to let everyone know I’m proud to be Latina! I have always looked up to J-Lo. She’s Puerto Rican as well, and she’s been able to be a successful business woman, and been so successful in building her craft. I hope the young girls will look up to me in just the same way!

What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in the acting industry and how have you overcome them? There are always going to be ups and downs; it’s a huge roller coaster ride. The challenge for me is to know that when you’re on those lows, that’s when you learn the biggest lessons. Those challenges you face on your lows only lift you up higher when you get to those highs. And then you’re able to differentiate: okay, I’m at my high, and okay, I’m in a low. You struggle, but you work harder to do better. So I think it would just be knowing that when I am at a low point, it’s ok!

Having performed as a teenager for some time now, what advice would you give the parents of high school teens? I would just say be patient. I feel like as a high school student, there are so many influences, so many things in our lives that are shaping us into the people we’re going to be. So I would say patience is a virtue because we’re chameleons: we’re going to transform and wear different things and do different things and experiment, but that doesn’t say that’s who they’re going to be at the end of the day. To parents, I’d just remind them not to lose the faith. And support, support, support! Whatever it is, whatever dream it is that your daughter or your son has.

What are some of your goals for the future? I love, love, love where I’m at right now, but getting to that silver screen is a huge goal of mine. I know I can see it now and it’s getting nearer and nearer, so definitely transitioning into a successful film career is where my head is now
