DON’T GET PINCHED

The Story Behind St. Patrick’s Day By Daniel Sutphin

In America, we have a way of taking things and making them our own. The argument as to whether or not this is always a good or bad thing is moot, aside from the fact that we tend to forget the purpose behind the original. This St. Patrick’s Day, between Car Bombs and chugs of Guinness and cheap, green-dyed beer, one should pose the question as to why we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. There is actually a purpose to the day, no matter how much we bastardize it. The Man Behind the Myth Bogged down by myths and legends, historic details of St. Patrick vary. Catholic.org tells of Patrick being born to a Britain-based, Roman couple who oversaw the colonies. Around 14, he was captured during a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd sheep. Ireland at this time was a land of Druids and pagans During his captivity, he found religion. Folklore describes that one night, while sleeping, a voice came to him in his dreams telling him to escape by going to the coast. There he met sailors who took him back to Britain where he rejoined his family. The voice later told him to return to Ireland. He achieved priesthood and, after being ordained as a bishop, he traveled back to Ireland to spread the Christian word. One legend claims that he met a chieftain of one of the tribes, who tried to kill him. Patrick converted him after the chieftain found he was unable to move his arm until he became friendly. Patrick preached the Gospel throughout Ireland winning over many converts. He used a shamrock to explain the Trinity, which became associated with Patrick, the Irish and eventually St. Patrick’s Day. He preached and converted for 40 years where he lived in poverty, traveled and endured much strife. He died on March 17, 461. St. Patrick’s Day was recognized centuries later in commemoration of his death.

A Day of Spiritual Renewal Due to St. Patrick’s association with bringing Christianity to Ireland, the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland celebrates with a holy day of obligation. The holiday is also officially celebrated by the Church of Ireland of the Anglican Communion; marked with special programs and a breaking of Lenten fasts. Many Irish citizens go to mass and spend the evening enjoying traditional Irish food and drink. For many outside of Ireland who commemorate its original purpose, it is seen as a day of spiritual renewal, complete with an offering of prayers for missionaries.

Totally useless fact: The word “tycoon” is based on taikun, a title used by Japanese Shoguns.

A Day When Everyone’s Irish (or so they claim) Many traditions have been developed over the years to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, however, not all of them are very accurate. The act of wearing green is exclusively an American tradition. In fact, in Ireland the color green was long considered unlucky. Another American creation we’ve so blindly embraced is drinking mass amounts of Irish beer or green beer, which has no historical reference at all. The dreaded pinching tradition inflicted upon those not conforming to the green get-up was apparently one started by school children. Yeah, school children! But be on the lookout this St. Patty’s because the pinchers are out there no matter what age you are! campus talk

You’re Hired Interview by Lauren Douglass

The Secret to

Getting A Job To find a job, you submit your resumé through online job sites and wait to hear back, right? Wrong. Tony Beshara, Ph.D., creator of The Job Search Solution is here to tell us how our job-hunting techniques have set college graduates up for failure – and what we can do to change it. What do you think the market is going to look like for students who are graduating in the spring? Hard. It’s no different than it’s been in the past four years. Eighty percent of the kids that graduate don’t have a job. It takes students an average of seven months to find one, and 60 percent of the time they go to work in something that has nothing to do with their degree, and they’re $24,000 in debt. It’s not going to get any better, at least not for a while. When should college students begin looking for a job? Start looking freshman year. Get as many internships as you can and work hard at them. Get as many off-campus jobs as you can, too. You should build relationships with companies that use students from your school. Admissions will say that a degree from their top-ranked school is what makes them marketable, but that’s not true. Students need to start looking early, they need to talk to a lot of people, they need to make a lot of contacts, and when they get into the interview, they need to know what they’re selling. How can you prepare yourself to go into an interview and sell yourself? Do your research. Every business has an online presence, so get online and find out what the company does. Then give them something you can do for them; everybody needs a salesperson, everybody needs an accountant or an engineer. Some people need folks that can sweep up the floors [laughs], you know?

years old, and here’s where I can document my success. I’ve been successful before and I’m going to be successful for you. I’ll show up early, I’ll stay late and I’ll work harder than anybody in your company.” Tell me a little about The Job Search Solution. It is, to my knowledge, America’s only 45-hour online job search tool about how to find a job. What makes it unique is that it’s actually written by somebody who’s been finding people jobs since 1973. I’ve been making between 150 and 200 calls a day, talking to candidates and employers, so I know exactly what goes on out there, and I teach people how to manage the job-finding process. What are some job market trends you’re seeing now? Actually, the market is better than it’s been in the past few years. The job market is going to grow very slowly, but employers are more interested in hiring than they have been before. The problem is that they can’t find qualified candidates, and it’s because candidates are not finding them. Candidates are sitting at their desk hitting that send button, thinking that’s how you find a job.

Your chances of even getting an interview by sending your resumé to a website are one in 300, and that’s just to get the interview. That’s not the way you find a job. Why are the odds of finding a job online so bad? It’s because companies receive approximately 118 resumés for every job they post, and job postings are nefarious to begin with. Twenty-five percent of the time a company posts a job, they never hire anybody; the job goes away. Another 25 percent of the time they already know who they’re going to hire, but they just throw a job listing out there so they can say to their higher-ups, “Well, we looked outside of the company, but we’re going to hire Leroy’s cousin.” The way to find a job is to pick up the phone and find an employer who needs to hire somebody. Talk them into interviewing you, then go in and sell yourself. So the key to finding a job is to be aggressive? Exactly! Look, there are 7.5 million business establishments in the United States, and the average size of a company is 16 people. These companies aren’t taking the time to sit and read all the resumés they get from online job sites. They’re busy running their business. Your job as a candidate is to get in front of those employers and say you can make them money and you can save them money. If you can give them enough reasons why they ought to hire you, they will. For more advice from Beshara, visit thejobsearchsolution.com

During an interview, what’s the best way to stand out? Remember that you’re selling yourself. You’re giving a company reasons why they ought to hire you. Let them know what you can do for them that the 45 other people they’re going to interview can’t. You’ve got to come up with examples in your background that show you’re a really hard worker. You can tell them, “I’ve been successful since I was 14 10

FROM THE HEART

Joyce The Beautiful

Giraud

Joyce Giraud isn’t just another pretty face on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Sure, she may be a beauty queen, but her real allurement comes from heart. In her creation of the Queen of the Universe pageant, she inspires women from around the world, no matter their background, to take pride in themselves. I caught up with Joyce to hear what filming has been like for a reality show and for the NBC drama Siberia. Interview by Lauren Douglass

march 2014

Totally useless fact: Divorce is legal in every nation in the world except in the Philippines and in Vatican City.

FROM THE HEART Tell me about the show Siberia. How did that go? Siberia is an amazing show. It was NBC’s summer show, and I’m the lead. It’s about a group of reality contestants who go to Siberia to compete for $500,000, but once they get there, they’re told that there are no rules, nothing in the game. They realize they’re lost in Siberia because the producers and everybody abandons them. It’s kind of like Survivor meets LOST. It’s a faux-scripted reality show, what does that mean? It’s a fully-scripted show, but shot through a reality lens. We shot it kind of like Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity, so it does feel very real. One of the biggest compliments we’ve ever received is that our audience thought they were watching a reality show – that means we’re doing our job well! The Queen of the Universe pageant is coming up – can you tell me a little about it? Queen of the Universe is a pageant that I created through UNESCO, which is the United Nations Education Science and Cultural Organization. I come from the pageant background, and I believe pageants provide this amazing opportunity to have a voice. Suddenly, when you have a title, people listen to what you have to say. It was for that reason that I’m able to represent Puerto Rico in different parts of the world. What makes Queen of the Universe unique? I’ve always wondered, why does having a baby at a young age disqualify a girl from being in a pageant? Why can’t a woman who is married represent women throughout the

world? That’s just not right, so I created this pageant where women can be single, married, divorced, have children – it doesn’t matter. The only important qualification is that they have a charity-based platform. This gives women from across the globe the opportunity to represent their countries in a charitable alliance to benefit children around the world in reaching their educational goals. Who is the current Queen of the Universe? Ivette Saucedo is an actress, model and philanthropist and was the first to be crowned Queen of the Universe as Miss Spain last year. Ivette works with the charity “My Sister’s Closet,” which provides clothing to homeless teens or teens who are struggling financially. Also, she formed “Casey’s Rescue,” which is a shelter that rescues and finds new homes for abandoned pets. If women want to get involved, when and where is the pageant being held? The second annual pageant is being held on Sunday, March 16th at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills. If you want to get involved, you can go on QueenUniversePageant.com and contact us there, or you can contact our office at 323-848-8966. On to Real Housewives, what has filming been like? It’s had ups and downs [laughs]. Overall it was a great experience. I loved the producers and the crew. I just hope it’s portrayed true to everything that happened. Real Housewives is one of those guilty pleasures that people love watching because it’s light television you can escape into when you get home. I watched the show, too. That being said, I was

surprised by some of the girls. As an audience member, I had preconceived ideas about how some of the girls would be, but it didn’t turn out that way. What has surprised you most about either filming or the cast? I thought that it would be really guided reality, but it’s not. What you see is what it is. The other thing, just to give you an example, I thought Kyle would be conniving and horrible – that was my preconceived notion of her – and thank God I got to know her because I really do like her and we established a great relationship. I also thought I would get along great with Brandi, but obviously you see that a lot of things happened. Do you think your background as an actor has influenced what you allow the public to see on the show? You know, no. I should’ve known better [laughs], and I should’ve used my background in film, but I didn’t because I wanted it to be a natural experience. I wanted people to get to know the real me. Though, I should have used my acting background in some cases. For example, I hate my tagline (“In Beverly Hills, they say you can never be too young, too thin, or too rich.“). I hate it with a passion; it’s so not representative of who I am! Speaking of that, are you worried about the public judgment? I’m not worried. Once they watch it and get to know me, I think they’ll start to see the real me. You’re not a hundred dollar bill for everybody to like you. Some people will like you and some people won’t. I did stay true to myself.

He imagined a future in which “sooner or later everything turns into television.” Here, we have a portion of his essay, detailing something very similar to a present we’re now living.

JOURNEY TO STARDOM

Westbrook Interview by Lauren Douglass, Photos by Liz Brinson

Erinn Westbrook is a mean girl. At least, she plays one on TV. This Harvard graduate just landed the role as Glee’s new character Bree, the cheerleading captain we all love to hate. Today, Westbrook talks to me about her journey to stardom, the sacrifices she’s made along the way and the importance of following your dreams. So Erinn, were you a fan of Glee before you were cast? I was, and I am still. I’ve always been very interested in music and acting and dancing, so just being able to witness all three of those things on one program was very exciting for me. What was the audition process like? I began auditioning in the beginning of July and didn’t finish until the beginning of August, so the process was about a month long. The first audition was just singing and dancing; they wanted to make sure we could do that first. By the third audition, they gave us choreography and wanted to see how quickly we could pick that up. During the last audition, it was just me and one other girl. By that point, I was excited and not even that nervous because I realized that if it was meant for me, it would happen. Luckily it worked out! How do you prepare for Bree? I love the writers from the show. They always write such great material, so I have fun saying everything they’ve written and trying out different ways of talking. I tend to walk around my room as I’m memorizing things, trying to get into the character of a meal girl. I’m not a mean girl [laughing], which is why I’m an actress. I just play around with the language they give me, and when it clicks, you know it. Can you relate to Bree? I can’t relate to her on the cruel level, but I’m hoping that, at the core of her, she’s a nice girl and that we’ll eventually see a kinder side of her. Until then, the only thing I can say I have in common with Bree is that when I was in high school I was varsity cheerleading captain [laughing], so I know how to wear the little uniform; that’s something that’s familiar to me. 18

Totally useless fact: While most of it lies in Africa, a small part of Egypt is located in Asia, as well.

JOURNEY TO STARDOM What is it like seeing yourself on television? For me, it’s always difficult to watch myself. I’m always like, “Oh man, how am I going to be received by not only the fans, but my friends, my family?” It’s tough to watch yourself on screen; I’m still getting used to it. So far, the reception has been really great. I think fans love to hate Bree so I think everything is turning out. How do you deal with some of the criticism? You can’t focus on it. There are always going to be people who dislike a character, but there are going to be ten times more people who do like what you’re doing and who are excited about you. You have to just focus on the positive. Especially in this industry, everyone gets criticized, but you also have so many fans. You just have to keep focusing on the positivity that’s coming your way. That’s the best thing. When you were at Harvard, did you believe that you would end up acting? I did, I did. My degree was in English and American Literature and Language, but my secondary was Dramatic Arts. I always knew that I would pursue acting whole-heartedly after school; this is where my heart is. I’m really excited that it seems to be working out. What are some of the sacrifices you’ve made to get to where you are today? After school, almost all of my friends stayed in the northeast. I have a lot of family in New York, but I also grew up in St. Louis, so no one was here! I made a big sacrifice by leaving behind the comforts of family and friends and starting fresh in L.A., a new town where I literally knew no one. And yet, I knew this was something I had to do. Also, you have to work hard here. I sacrifice a lot of time and energy. When you choose this path, you aren’t going to have a lot of free time. You have to do late hours; there are times when you’re on set until 2:30 AM! But you’re doing what you love and you have to be willing to commit fully. In regards to some of the roles that you haven’t gotten, why do you think you got this one? I think that God was saving this role for me. As they say, when one door closes another one opens. I think all those parts I didn’t get were preparing me for this role. I tested six months ago for a pilot on Fox called Delirium, and it was down to me and one other girl. I tested for Ravenswood on ABC Family, which is the Pretty Little Liars show spinoff. Every time I was so close and almost there, but I didn’t get it. Had someone told me that I was going to get a role in Glee, which is a better fit for me because I’m a singer, I dance and I like acting, I would have been like, “Well, that clearly makes so much more sense!” It really is a perfect fit. Totally useless fact: Madonna’s last name is Ciccone

What are some of your future plans? I want to keep acting. I want to challenge myself and try other parts. I would like to get involved with more dramas, and I’d love to do film eventually. I also really want to create my own stuff. I’m a writer, I love writing, and I have a script that I’m excited about and I’m working on now. I’d love to play around behind the camera, and I’m also musically inclined so having an album at one point would be great, and that’s in the cards. I have a lot of goals, and I’m taking it day-by-day right now. I’m definitely excited for what the future holds, because I do think that it is bright. You can check out Erinn on Glee premiering February 25 on Fox!

Playing the part

Jonathan Keltz

Interview by Lauren Douglass, Photo by Manfred Baumann

Ever since Jonathan Keltz was a kid, he knew who he wanted to be – somebody else. As an actor, Keltz has explored crime drama on CBC’s Republic of Doyle, comedy in 21 And Over, and now period drama on CW’s Reign. Here, Keltz shares his take on his Canadian-American acting career, funny memories from his past and his hopes for the future. With Reign, what is it like to film a period drama? It’s been an absolute blast. The sets, the wardrobe, the styling, it’s all unbelievable. I play a kitchen boy who’s in love with a very wealthy woman – something that’s completely frowned upon. The woman’s family wants her to marry into a title, so obviously the lowly kitchen boy doesn’t suit their standards. What demographic is this show geared toward? I’d say it’s geared toward high school and college girls, but people keep telling me that it’s a show their whole family has been watching – mothers, daughters, sisters, everyone’s getting together to watch it. I’d say we’re a female-centric show because we have such strong female characters like Mary and Queen Catherine and all the ladies in waiting. You’ve lived in Canada; what are some of the benefits to having a dual residency? I moved up to Canada with my parents at the start of high school. That was around the same time that I started acting professionally, so it allowed me to establish myself in a smaller market and use that work to move out to LA. Now, the ability to move back and forth has been a huge asset. There are productions shooting all across Canada constantly, but I’m American as well, so it’s the best of both worlds. What are some of the differences you’ve noticed between Americans and anadians? Well, I don’t know any of our mayors in the States smoking rack but uh… [laughs]. They’re pretty similar countries and cultures but there are definitely differences. One big difference is that Canada’s population is about 10 percent of the United States’ population. That creates a fundamental difference in the way the country operates. There are some polite Canadians, there are some passive aggressive Canadians, then I think us New Yorkers and Americans are generally pretty loud and ambitious. [Laughs] 22

march 2014

Why did you choose acting? What draws you to it? Acting is something that I knew I wanted to do from a young age. Even at nine years old, I knew this was something that I wanted to do. It’s such an interesting craft because it’s you. There are all these different characters and different projects that you get to be a part of, but at the end of the day it’s you. The paints are what I have within myself. There’s nothing else I could see myself doing. What kind of career goals have you set for yourself? That’s a tricky question [laughs]. I believe if we have high ambitions and are able to push ourselves, we can achieve whatever we want. In terms of tangible things, I’d like to work with the people whom I admire most, whether it be Christopher Nolan, Daniel Day Lewis, Matt Damon, Michael Fassbender. To have the people I respect and admire respect me as their peer, that’s my primary goal. What about your bucket list? I’ve got to go skydiving. I’ve done bungee jumping but not skydiving and I really want to go. I know it’s going to change my life. I also want to go to Brazil. That’ll be crossed off my list, too, because my girlfriend’s Brazilian. I want to learn Portuguese. I’d say anything Ben Stiller does in The Life of Mitty fits. I’d love to go to Italy and see the Colosseum. Have a child! That’s on the bucket list. what attracted you to Republic of Doyle? This is a fun show. It’s in St. Johns, Newfoundland, which is a beautiful place and it is the easternmost point of the continent, so you feel like you’re on the edge of the world. The show is a drama about some private eyes and how they work and don’t work with the police force up there. I play Constable Grayson Mann, who’s a cop everyone loves to hate. He’s certainly a fun character to play. Is it difficult switching between roles? You know, it’s interesting. All year, I’ve been shooting two things at once. The thing that’s tricky is time and energy. There was a six week period where I was shooting Necessary Roughness in Atlanta over the summer when it was hot and humid, and also shooting Republic of Doyle in Newfoundland in this cool, breezy weather. Flying back and forth between the sets just wore my body down, but I like being busy. What are some of your best memories from Entourage? Oh, the list goes on and on. It was such a blast. One of the craziest days was when Mike Tyson and Aaron Sorkin were there the same day – it was insanity! I was a huge fan of the show, so to just be on that set was a dream come true. I had such a blast walking the halls at that agency, and I probably saw my fair share of Arie Gold’s office, but if I ever hear Jeremy Biven screaming at me, it might bring a nostalgic tear to my eye. Totally useless fact: The sum of all the numbers on a roulette wheel is 666.

Kitchen

In addition to their outstanding menu, Zoës Kitchen stands out for three great reasons: They don’t own any fryers or microwaves, their menu includes vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options, and they’ve got a full-fledged takeout menu. Finally, busy students on the go can grab a quick meal with a clear conscience. Takehome tubs include ready-to-eat chicken salad, “hummus pint,” marinated slaw and tuna salad – all tasty, quick alternatives when you want dinner in a pinch. Some other must-try menu items include Zoës’ signature chicken kabobs – two sizzling stacks of grilled peppers and onions alongside tomato, rice pilaf and a side Greek salad – and their Gruben (it’s Zoës’ favorite!). If you’re looking for something sweet, try Yaya’s handmade chocolate cake – it’s rich, gooey and absolutely delicious. 24

If you’re looking for a fresh, fast-casual restaurant that features Mediterranean cuisine with a Southern twist, look no further than Zoës Kitchen. Their madefrom-scratch ingredients and home-style hospitality make this unique hotspot Gainesville’s newest favorite.

Though we’re glad to see its grand opening in Gainesville, our city isn’t the first to experience Zoës’ unique taste. Founded in 1995 in Birmingham, Alabama by Zoë Cassimus, Zoës Kitchen is one of the fastest growing in-and-out restaurants in the nation. What makes this joint so popular is its convenience; students can dine in, order online, choose catering or call ahead for takeout. Today, Zoës Kitchen has 103 locations in 15 states across the nation. On Archer Road, the restaurant seats about 80 guests and includes an outdoor patio where you can soak up that beautiful Florida sun while surrounded by fresh-growing rosemary. Don’t just take our word for it. Give dorm room mac-n-cheese a break and head on out to Zoës!

The Makings of Interview by Daniel Sutphin

Mr. Olympia

Bodybuilder Phil Heath “What makes a man?” Though this age-old question has many answers, the drive, motivation and dedication exemplified by bodybuilders certainly sets them apart. Phil Heath began bodybuilding in his fourth year of college after deciding that he had reached his peak as a Division I NCAA point guard for the University of Denver. Often dubbed the “Gentle Giant,” Heath won his first amateur competition in 2003, less than a year after beginning his initial training. Heath’s passion left him undefeated during his amateur career and helped him claim several IFBB Pro Competition titles. Eventually, this competitive athlete went on to win the coveted Mr. Olympia title. Heath was recently featured in the docudrama Generation Iron. CT caught up with Heath to discuss the film, his path to becoming Mr. Olympia and his plans for the future. Tell me about Generation Iron. It was a really cool experience because there’s limited documentaries on bodybuilding, so I felt privileged to have had the opportunity to be filmed in that realm. It was also pretty enduring because I’m five weeks out from the competition, so I’d normally be keeping to myself. I’m not used to having cameras following me around everywhere. It’s not an invasion of privacy, but it’s definitely something you have to adjust to. Do you think this film will help bring bodybuilding to the forefront of sports? I definitely think it will because that’s exactly what Pumping Iron did with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and it’s kind of like a sequel to that. I think we have a great opportunity with this film. It’ll give a lot of people various 30

perspectives and maybe put away some myths and negative stereotypes that go along with bodybuilding. What is your role in the film? My role in it was to play the alpha-male who’s the king of the mountain, he’s the champ. I definitely come across as being more forward than the others as far as my athletic prowess. Tell me about your second nickname “The Gift.” In the movie, my nickname is The Gift. It doesn’t mean that I’m a gift from God or that I am a higher being with better genetics than everybody else – any pro athlete has great genetics. No, it’s what I’m doing outside of the competition that makes me The Gift. I’m giving myself to the fans and giving perspective on how to train, how to overcome obstacles. I’m letting people know that it’s okay to tell others that you body build. What do you think about the rumors that you’re not fit for the crown? People should be more concerned with my physique [laughs]. If someone’s going to try and attack you personally, that just shows they’re not even close to beating you on stage. I’m the only one that went to an accredited 4-year university and played in Division I athletics. I’ve managed to do something no one else has been able to do, as far as they’re concerned, which is to crossover from a mainstream sport like basketball and get into body building.

You mentioned that you played basketball. Why did you leave that sport to pursue bodybuilding? I played four years at the University of Denver and definitely wasn’t the star athlete in college. There are just some things you can’t force in life. I was fortunate enough to find another outlet for health and fitness with bodybuilding, therefore I didn’t have to spin my wheels trying to play basketball overseas or trying to play in a developmental league in the NBA. I found something very fast and luckily for me it took off. Of course, if I could play basketball at the next level I would have tried, but now that I’m Mr. Olympia three times over, I think I’m actually better off. How many hours a day do you have to train to maintain your physique? Man, [laughs] usually about two hours. It depends on the body part, but you can go anywhere from two to four hours, and that includes cardiovascular workouts as well.

Totally useless fact: A group of jellyfish is called a ‘smack.’

pumped up

Being a bodybuilder, you can’t just be focused on pumping weights. You have to get on that treadmill or bike and exercise your heart too. What’s your daily caloric intake? It’s around 6,500 calories, and that may drop into the 4,800 range when I’m getting ready for a contest. And that’s all food, no protein shakes. If I added protein shakes, we’re pushing it at around 8,000 calories. Now that you’ve won the crown, what drives you to keep going? Do you want to keep winning? I think when you win something as prestigious as this contest, you start to get the bug, you get the urge to see how far you can take it. Only 13 people including myself have won it over the last 50 years. Though, it’s not about other people anymore; I want to see if I can beat myself. It’s pretty cool to ask myself every morning, “Can I get better today?” and the answer is always yes. How long do you hope to continue bodybuilding? I don’t know what my shelf life is, but I had to give my wife a date [laughs]. I said the year 2020. It just sounds right, and no matter what happens, that’s the plan. The Bag Man

Rebecca Interview by Lauren Douglass, Photo by PETER SVENSON

Da Costa Rebecca Da Costa is more than just a bombshell Brazilian. This gorgeous and talented model made the switch to acting just four years ago, but she’s taking Hollywood by storm. Today, Da Costa talks with me about her lead role in the new thriller The Bag Man, gives us a peek at what it’s like working with Robert De Niro, and shares a few thoughtful words of wisdom for big dreamers. Tell me about The Bag Man. What was it like to film? It was great. It was all night shoots, so we started shooting from 6pm until 6am every day for two months. Plus New Orleans is full of wildlife, and like three or four times we had an alligator show up to the set. Were you intimidated working with the cast? No, not at all! By the time I heard the news that I was on the project, I was already focused so there was no place for me to be nervous or intimidated. When I started the project, John Cusack was signed on to do it, and even though I’m a big fan of his work, I think that the secret to not being nervous is to prepare yourself. What is Robert De Niro like in person? He’s really nice! He’s very quiet, very humble; I was very surprised because he’s been around for, what, forty years? So I didn’t know what to expect, but we exchanged ideas and I was happily impressed. Did he give you any pointers? Yes. For instance, there was a scene in the movie where I was supposed to be ignoring him, and there was a big harp on the set in the house. He saw it and said, “Why don’t you play the harp?” We asked the director about it and he asked if I knew how to play the harp. I said no, of course not [laughs], but we improvised and the scene turned out amazing. We were very creative and he was very open to that. 40

the bag man

Tell me about the film. What can viewers expect? It’s a very interesting movie. I don’t want to say it’s a love story because it’s not, but it’s about two people coming out of the darkness. John Cusack is a hit man and he’s really tired of it and just wants to quit, and my character happens to be in the same motel that he is. You don’t really know much about her, but throughout the movie layers start to come off. The interesting thing is, my character’s hair changes all the time. I have three different hair colors in this movie. Oh wow! Yeah, it’s really crazy! I have blue hair, I have blond hair and I have black hair. So you have all these physical, visual layers, and many other outer layers that aren’t as physical. Such an exciting movie! And it’s got a great cast; it also has Dominic Purcell from Prison Break and Crispin Glover who plays an amazing character who’s very weird. It’s a very artistic, film noir type of movie.

Which do you prefer, modeling or acting? Acting, 100 percent. The modeling helped me a lot with acting and with life experiences in front of the camera, which can be intimidating, but acting is a whole different world. You have to be fully committed.

So tell me about your time as a model. What was it like? It was very exciting. It all started when I won a contest in my hometown in the northeast of Brazil, and I left home at fourteen. For me, I just thought it was exciting. I didn’t think about the dangers of being off in the world at fourteen. Once I was with the agency, though, they advised us and protected us and I traveled around the world for seven years. I speak four languages, and I met a lot of interesting people and it was an amazing life experience. It seems that people my age don’t get to experience that, and it helps me as inspiration for my acting. What were some of your best memories? There was one time I went to Bali to do a campaign. It was my first time there, and the place was very spiritual. We went to shoot at a temple where there were all these students. I’m six feet tall, and all the kids were short and were very impressed, as if they weren’t used to seeing such tall women, so I stopped the entire class and they all came to me asking for pictures. It was the sweetest thing and really was a great moment.

Based off of your experience, what’s some advice you could give to younger women? Look, I come from a very simple family in Brazil, but here I just made a movie with Robert De Niro. You just have to believe in yourself and go with it. Sometimes you have a dream that’s so far away, you don’t even know where to start. You think “I’m in Brazil, how am I going to get to Hollywood?” But when you’re focused, you’ll attract the right opportunities into your life. What are some of your long-term goals? I have two other movies coming out this year, Mine Games that’s a thriller, and Breaking at the Edge where I play the lead opposite Milo Ventimiglia and Andie MacDowell. Other than that, I’d love to be in a musical, and I just want to keep doing things that excite me. If you look at my career, all the movies I’ve done so far are very different, so I’m going to keep challenging myself.

Infamous: Second Son PS4 March 21 inFamous: Second Son takes place in the same universe as the original inFamous games on PS3. Using the PS4 system, the games upgraded visuals and details give the virtual Seattlebased environment a realistic feel and look. Seven years have passed since the events in New Marais and an organization called the DUP has been formed to prevent the events found in inFamous and inFamous 2. Gamers play as Delsin, the newest conduit of the world, to build his powers and establish him as a hero or anti-hero in the latest chapter of the Sucker Punch franchise.

Dark Souls 2 PC, PS3, Xbox 360 March 2014 With similar combat to the first game and lots of enemies to face, Dark Souls 2 features a new hero, a new storyline, and an unfamiliar world for players to endure while delivering its signature brand of punishment. Players experience major battles with gruesome enemies and blood-thirsty bosses as they traverse through the devastated environment. The RPG also features a revamped server-based multiplayer for those hoping to share their experience.

Titanfall Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC March 11 The first-person shooter is set in a distant frontier torn apart by war. The game gives players the freedom to switch between fighting as assault pilots or as agile, heavily armored, 24-foot-tall Titans. Online gameplay is a big component of the Titanfall experience, as fast-paced multiplayer action is combined with heroic moments from traditional campaign mode.

Two life-long friends were enjoying a few pints down at the local bar, when one said to the other, “If I ask you a question, will you promise to answer me honestly?” “Yeah, sure thing,” replied his friend, “fire away.” “Well,” said the first guy, “why do you think all the guys around here find my wife so attractive?” “It’s probably because of her speech impediment,” replied the second guy. “What do you mean her speech impediment?” inquired the first fellow. “My wife doesn’t have a speech impediment!” “Well,” replied his friend, “you must be the only guy who hasn’t noticed that she can’t say ‘NO!’”

A drunk walked into a bar crying. One of the other men in the bar asked him what happened. “I did a terrible thing,” sniffed the drunk, “Just a few hours ago I sold my wife to someone for a bottle of Southern Comfort.” “That is awful,” said the other guy, “and now that she is gone you want her back, right?” “Right!” said the drunk, still crying. “You’re sorry you sold her because you realized it’s too late and that you still loved her, right?” “Oh, no,” said the drunk, “I want her back because I’m thirsty again!”

Make More Half of our nation’s teachers will retire over the next decade. That’s 50 percent. And yet, only around nine percent of college students consider teaching a worthwhile career. Here to discuss this gap are National Board Certified teachers Faye Cook and Sue Creekmore from TEACH.org and the Make More campaign.

Interview by Lauren Douglass

The Teacher

Deficit

Faye, why is teaching a good career choice for college students? I think if students can see beyond the money, they would see that teaching is a job that’s overwhelmingly rewarding. Maybe not every day, because there are some frustrations, but overall this profession allows you to make a difference. We aren’t just molding the academics within a student, but we are molding the future of this country by our work. Sue, did you want to add anything to that? I’ll say that public education is at a real crossroads right now and this is an extremely important time in our country for public education. Teachers’ salaries do seem to be increasing, which is critical, because there has to be a reasonable incentive, financially, to go into teaching. If a student is interested in teaching, what steps should they take? Sue: If a person in college is interested in being a teacher, they should involve themselves in local education that’s available. When I was in college, I sat in at the local elementary school once a week just to sit and watch. As I went through college, my role in that school progressed. It was extremely rewarding for me, and was good to have a basic understanding of what to expect from a job in teaching. Connecting pre-service teachers with

teachers certified by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards will provide excellent role models and allow them to learn from the best in our profession.

Faye: I agree. Teaching isn’t a job for everyone. There are some people who are absolutely not cut out for it. I read an interesting blog post a few days ago that was written by a man who truly was a rocket scientist. When they had cutbacks at NASA because of the elimination of the space shuttle, he decided to take a teaching job. He found out that teaching truly was harder than being a rocket scientist. In his job, there were teams of people dedicated to solving one problem at a time. He said when he got into the classroom, there were a myriad of problems all going on at the same time. Teaching is demanding. It takes a lot of intellectual capacity to make the day-to-day decisions. Faye, do you think that society places a lower importance on education? If we truly valued our education we wouldn’t be begging our state legislators every year for education funding. If our society valued education, when students need to stay an extra hour after school to do lessons, their parents would jump on the opportunity in a heartbeat. Instead, we have to beg parents to let their kids stay an extra hour when they need extra help.

Totally useless fact: The U.S. military operates 234 golf courses.

Sue, what do you think is the solution to this imbalance? I think if we could just find some kind of happy medium between what we’re doing and what Asia is doing, everybody would be so much better off. I was sent to be a Fulbright scholar in Japan a few years ago. I spent three weeks studying their school system, going to their universities, and just having very interesting and amazing conversations with their top educators and students. I saw that Japan is trying to move away from only emphasizing testing – they want more well-rounded children, too – so I think we also need to find that happy medium where all children maximize their talents and become productive, contributing members of our global community. Faye, can you give an example of how funding cuts are affecting our societies’ students? Incentive stipends offered by states and local districts have been cut. The National Board stipend has been cut, yet we have amazing research that demonstrates the expertise and increased learning gains of students who are taught by National Board teachers. They just released this current year’s data for the number of teachers who earn National Board certification in each state. Several years ago, Florida was at the same level as North Carolina. This year Florida had a total of only 36 new NBCT’s, while North Carolina had over 300. We know that NBCT’s outperform noncertified teachers – the data has shown that repeatedly – yet the national government doesn’t have the push from the state or local government to get our teachers on through that program. What do you think the future looks like for education? Faye: I see education as being in a state of change. Right now we have two “teacherpreneurs” working at our school district. They work half a day in their regular teaching jobs, and the other half they’re working on bigger, broader projects in different fields. This gives them a chance to go beyond teaching in their four walls and have a broader impact on the profession. I think the future of teaching is going to hold more of these kinds of mixed additions. Sue: What we are looking at is almost like the change many years ago in our nation’s history where we went from an agricultural society to an industrialized society. We’re in the process of a huge change in public education. From the day I walked in and took over my first class to today, it’s a whole different world. Visit TEACH.org to see if teaching is right for you or to learn more information.

Make More Campaign Make More was conceived by the TEACH coalition, a partnership between local, state and national organizations, and aims at guiding top students into a teaching career. campus talk

Friends on Spring Break

Fun Interview by Lauren Douglass

Wine

in a Can AN Interview with Joe Peleg For years, wine has been the drink of choice at weddings, anniversaries and other special occasions. And yet, why should we limit wine to upscale parties and high-class evenings? Couldn’t it be a convenient and tasty option at beach parties or spring break destinations? It’s that very question that inspired CEO Joe Peleg to create Friends Fun Wine in a Can, a refreshing new product that’s giving this tasty beverage a whole new meaning. Today, Peleg shares with me his vision for this unique product in a can. So you wanted to introduce wine in America as more How did you get started of a casual drink? with the company? I asked myself, “Why does wine That’s the best story! I’ve notice have to always be this fancy thing? that in America, wine is Why does it have to be for high something people only drink on class people? Why can’t we mass special occasions. I’ve lived in produce it?” We’ve tried to develop Europe and the Middle East, and a mix of several things with this it’s different there; wine is part of wine. We wanted a delicious the daily life. When you go into a product at a reasonable price, to restaurant in Europe, you’re serve it in a nice package so that served wine on the house and you don’t have to open a bottle, water. No one asks if you want and for it to have a great taste. a Coke or an iced tea.

march 2014

What has it been like transitioning wine from a bottle to a can? I worked on developing the can with the largest can producer in the world. It’s the same company that works for Coca-Cola, Red Bull, Heineken, you name it. We developed the packaging for the can, and today the can is much better than the glass bottle; it’s something the world is moving toward. Our cans are 100 percent recyclable. What’s the reception for Friends been like? Wonderful! We started to sell at the beginning of this year, and we’re already in big retailers. We’ve been approved for a spot in 7-Eleven, Walmart and CVS in Florida, as well as many restaurants, hotels and more. So far, we’ve been very successful. For instance, we started selling with one of our first clients last June. At the beginning, our wine was listed on their menu under the category of fine wine, but now we’re their main wine on the menu. We’ve had a lot of nice reception for the product in that way. How do people like your wine compared to traditional bottle wine? I can tell you, those who taste it once are coming back to taste it again. If you watch people taste it, you’ll see the reaction. The flavor is excellent. Plus, it looks cool. It’s fashionable, and the packaging is very good. We look at it like a fashion, not just a new

beverage. But it also travels well. You can drink it at an outdoor event just like other canned drinks, but this has many more flavor options. What’s your favorite flavor? The white sangria is my favorite, but it’s not quite as popular because people don’t know about it yet. They know the red sangria, but not the white, though it’s an excellent drink. I love it. The most popular among the consumers is the strawberry Moscato. Where do you see the company heading? We think it’s going to grow, especially for the college student who is graduating or turning 21. In this day, young people want to know that when they go out and drink, they can show that they know how to drink. They don’t want to go out and after two shots already feel tipsy. With this wine, it’s not like that. They can go out and drink and not finish the evening after an hour. For women, I know we sometimes prefer to drink wine over liquor, but it’s harder to carry glass bottles around. This seems like a better alternative. One hundred percent. Not only that, but a lot of people get headaches after drinking. With this, that’s less of a problem. You can drink it at a light lunch and you won’t feel tired, you’ll still feel excellent.

Max Matluck UF Musician and (almost) Graduate

Before He Is Famous For people who haven’t heard your music, tell me a little about your style. We’re a collaboration of different genres of music that we meld together. We’ve gotten to this point where we’re able to add our own sound into any song. I mainly sing, but I also play guitar. I’ve been doing both for six years. Apart from that, I play the drums and the piano as well. Tell me a little about how you signed. I went to a summer internship at BMG – Bertelsmann Music Group – which is a music company that’s got Bruno Mars, Duran Duran and a bunch of other artists. During my internship, I shadowed a man named Jonathan Keys. I was originally supposed to pay him for consulting and he was going to give me advice on songs, but after I sang for him, he was surprised and impressed – he didn’t think I’d actually be good [laughs].

o d s y a w l a d l “You shou ; y p p a h u o y s e k what ma e n o r e b m u n e h that’s t rule in life.” Max Matluck, UF senior and rising musician, couldn’t have said it better. He spoke with CT about signing with a manager and about what life is about to bring after college.

So what’s next for you? I’m moving to LA in July to pursue my music career. I’m willing to starve a little bit for a year or two or three. I’d like to say I’ll go to grad school since I’m currently studying for the GMAT, but we’ll see. You are about to graduate. What advice can you offer? I actually majored in marketing and minored in entrepreneurship. As much as I love music, I enjoy the whole side of PR too. If you’re trying to be an engineer, then obviously get your engineering degree. But if you have a dream, pick the major you want that applies to it. Do well, prove that you’re a good student, and the rest will follow. You should always do what makes you happy; that’s the number one rule in life.

Half way through the summer, he was offered a deal with Lava Records, which is one of the hottest labels right now – they signed Lorde. What’s the benefit of having someone like Jonathan to work with? He introduces me to industry players and represents me as an artist and song writer. Any time he speaks to a producer or a publishing company, he mentions me. Many times big record labels need lyrics, so he’ll ask if I want to try my hand at them. I’m listening to seven potential tracks right now. When I’m done with them and Jonathan approves, he’ll send them through.

The man finally agrees, and turns the frog over to the stranger in exchange for the money. “Are you insane?” the bartender demanded. “That frog could have been worth millions to you, and you let him go for a mere $500,000!” “Don’t worry about it.” the man answered. “The frog was really nothing special. Music Reviews

Tune In Turn On Plug In By Daniel Sutphin

Broken Bells After the Disco James Mercer (The Shins) and Brian Burton (Danger Mouse) join forces again for Broken Bells sophomore album After the Disco. The collaboration, although a stark change from the their individual efforts, blends the two artists’ styles for a unique sound of mid-tempo beats, synth, and ambient guitars with a subtle dose of funk. The first single Holding On For Life sticks to its groove leaving listeners with a comforting, catchy, upbeat track. The album as a whole maintains this feeling. Other standout tracks include A Perfect World, After the Disco and The Remains of Rock and Roll.

Bruce Springsteen High Hopes As a skeptic with a general dislike for Bruce Springsteen’s body of work, I can honestly say that I was not expecting much out of High Hopes, even with the addition of Tom Morello, a musician who’s work I have appreciated and followed for most of my life. I figured it would be the same old bland three-chord, generic rock songs, topped off with basic horns arrangement and simple backbeat, but with Morello on every track overcompensating on guitar due to producer influence. From the opening track, however, High Hopes exonerated my predispositions. While Bruce does maintain the staple sound fans have come to know over the years, Morello is able to breathe some new life into it without overdoing it on guitar. The strongest track is the title track High Hopes. It’s upbeat and driving. The horns are wellplaced and not overly produced. Morello brings enough of his style to accent the rest of the instruments. Other standouts include Harry’s Place and The Ghost of Tom Joad, which the two first collaborated on at the 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

A Great Big World Is Theree Anybody Out There? Upon first listen, A Great Big World comes off as a cheeky, copycat mix of influences that range from the musical Rent, later Panic! at the Disco and ‘90s alt-bands like Supersonic, Ben Folds Five and Weezer. Although commendable in it’s message and attempt, the track, Everyone is Gay, is a perfect example of this oddly-tailored, quirky sound and approach. However, as listeners continue through the LP, tracks like Say Something, There is An Answer, I Don’t Wanna Love and This is The New Year, reveal a great deal of depth, heart and song-writing capability. There are a great deal of indie-rock bands floating around out there these days, but between the members’ personality as a band, musical ability, big, catchy hooks and appreciation for dynamics, A Great Big World easily deserves multiple listens. All that said, featuring Christina Aguilera on a remix of their song, Say Something, to close the album seems like a cop out.

Totally useless fact: Who’s that playing the piano on the “Mad About You” theme? Paul Reiser himself.

The Internet Feel Good I’d like to say that the band name is the least inspiring part of the group, The Internet, but after listening to six tracks and feeling as though I had listened to all 13, it’s obvious that the group’s pretentious, unfinished blend of ‘90s R&B and modern hip-hop/ electronic music is far more diminishing. Runnin’ and Dont’cha are upbeat and coherent, serving as a pick-me-up from the long-winded, droning of mundane instrumentals and non-compelling vocals. Despite influences of dynamic R&B and smooth jazz artists like Erykah Badu and Sade, the band fails to reach a sense of individuality or intrigue. It would serve as good background music while shopping at the Gap, but it doesn’t have much cause for stimulation elsewhere. campus talk

A completely inebriated man walked into a bar and, after staring for some time at the only woman seated at the bar, walked over to her, placed his hand up her skirt and began fondling her. She jumped up and slapped him silly. He immediately apologized and explained, “I’m sorry. I thought you were my wife. You look exactly like her. “Why you drunken, worthless, insufferable son of a bitch! she screamed. “Funny, he muttered, “you even sound exactly like her.

Bob was in trouble. He forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was really pissed. She told him “Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE!

Wife: Okay, today’s Friday. Where’s your pay envelope? Man: I already spent all my pay. I bought something for the house. Wife: What? What could you buy for the house that cost $480? Man: Eight rounds of drinks.

A Texan bought a round of drinks for all in the bar and said that his wife had just produced “a typical Texas baby weighing twenty pounds.

The next morning he got up early and left for work. When his wife woke up, she looked out the window and sure enough, there was a box gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway. Confused, the wife put on her robe, ran out to the driveway and brought the box back in the house. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale. Bob has been missing since Friday.

Two weeks later he returned to the bar. The bartender recognized him and asked, “Aren’t you the father of the typical Texas baby that weighed twenty pounds at birth? “Yup, shore am! “How much does he weigh now? The proud father answered, “Ten pounds. The bartender said, “Why, what happened? He did weigh twenty pounds. The proud Texas father said, “Jest had him circumcised!
