THE VASHON HAVURAH
PUGET SOUND ZEN CENTER
15401 Westside Highway SW Suzanne Greenberg
PO Box 2644, Vashon Karen Hedlund, Board President
The Vashon Havurah is a welcoming home for the spiritual, social and intellectual needs of our
local Jewish Community. We aim to foster the exploration of Jewish life; to create an egalitarian setting where each member’s individual Jewish path is honored and supported, and to cultivate the tenets of Judaism through Study (Torah), Justice (Tzedakah), Prayer (T’filah), Deeds of loving Kindness (G’milut Chasidim), and Healing the World (Tikkun Olam). Climate change should be woven into every teaching in faith groups; we are all the voices of morals and ethics, and there is nothing more crucial at this moment in history than saving our future and our planet. Green Goals
1. Change our heat source to something with a lower carbon footprint (ideally, solar panels with a heat pump); 2. Weatherize our building with better insulation, double-paned windows and a new door; 3. No disposable plates, cups, napkins, and utensils at our gatherings; 4. Be diligent about recycling and composting; 5. To purchase an electric lawn mower instead of our gas mower; 6. Sponsor a Tu B’Shvat Seder (Birthday of the Trees) program every year with the Vashon Climate Action Group and discuss climate change and actions people can take. We will hand out trees to be planted! 7. Partner with climate-focused groups, on- and off-island to extend our reach and increase our opportunities to heal our planet; 8. Have climate teachings interspersed in our services and holidays, following the ancient Jewish value of “Tikkun Olam”, or “world repair.”

Green Goals
To eliminate use of single use plastics at all PSZC events and eradicate noxious weeds on the new Zen Center property, future home of the Puget Sound Zen Center zendo.
“Those who contemplate the beauty of the Earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is a symbolic, as well as actual beauty, in the migration of birds, the ebb and flow of tides, the folded bud ready for spring. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature— the assurance that dawn comes after the night and spring after the winter.“ –Rachel Carson, Silent Spring
