Winter Wonderland in Uptown Whittier “Winter Wonderland” is the theme for the 2011 Uptown Holiday Season of Events. The Whittier Uptown Association will kick off the season with the Grand Illumination at Rick's Drive In & Out on Friday, December 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. This event marks the kick-off to the holiday season with the lighting of the 30 ft. Christmas tree, the Whittier High School Marching Band, local community entertainment, carriage rides and Santa Claus accompanied by his elves. Along with the festivities, the winners of the Uptown Holiday Window Contest will also be announced. Judging for this event will be held on November 29. All Uptown Allan Nakken, businesses are encouraged to participate by decorating their Executive Director windows with some holiday cheer! Whittier Uptown Association The Whittier Uptown Association Board of Directors and President Sandra Hahn are very excited to officially announce that they will have a professionally installed and managed synthetic ice skating rink available to residents during the holidays! The Association has been working hard toward this goal and are now ready to bring something new and fun to the Uptown area this year. This attraction will be installed on the famous Green Belt Area along Greenleaf Avenue in the heart of Uptown Whittier. Hours of operation for the rink are as follows:

“Beyond Social Media: Direct Marketing in the Internet Age” Join the City of Whittier and the Whittier Chamber on Thursday, November 10 for a free business seminar Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce presented by Rich Casford, President of Whittier Mailing Service. Social media is all the rage these days, but whatever happened to good old fashioned mail? Attend this workshop to learn how direct marketing can be used to enhance those efforts. Mr. Casford will discuss advantages of including direct marketing within your social media and web based marketing plans. Rich will also give a short update on postal issues currently facing Congress. Rich serves on the Mailers Technical Advisory Work Group of the US Postal Service in Washington, D.C. and is a frequent speaker on Postal and Direct Mail topics. The B.O.S.S. program was developed in 2009 by the City of Whittier as part of the City’s Local Economic Stimulus and Business Assistance Plan and the monthly workshops are co-sponsored by the Whittier Chamber of Commerce. The seminar will be limited to 50 people and space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The seminar will be held in the Whittier Central Library’s Nixon Room, 7344 Washington Avenue. Monday – Thursday from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday & Saturday from 4 to 10 p.m. Sunday from 1 to 8 p.m. The rink will be installed on a level platform raised above the grass and will be 32' wide by 48' long. Thanks to Galaxy Sport, the leased rink will include fencing that will light up, along with a fog/snow machine and plenty of holiday music for the whole family. Skating prices will be $7.00 on weekdays and $10.00 Friday through Sunday (price includes one pair of ice skates). The rink can host nearly 40 skaters at one time and the Association hopes to see you and your families out on the ice! The rink will be open to the public from December 9 through December 17 bringing the joy of skating and out of town visitors to the Uptown area where everyone can enjoy the season while skating, shopping and dining at some great local eateries! Also coming up is the 58th Annual Christmas Parade, which will be held along Uptown’s tree lined streets on Saturday, December 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. This year’s Grand Marshall is Sharon Herzberger, President of Whittier College. Applications for entries, bands, floats, dignitaries, non-profits and sponsorships are now being accepted and are available online at www.whittieruptown.org. Applications must be turned in by November 21, 2011. Lastly, the Whittier Uptown Association will be hosting its 18th Annual “Holiday Sonata” on Saturday, December 17 from 5 to 9 p.m. The Sonata is designed to be an open house event, allowing Uptown merchants and restaurants to open their doors to the public for an evening with the sights, sounds and hospitality of the holiday season! The Whittier Uptown Association staff, Board of Directors and members want to be the first to wish all of our Chamber of Commerce friends and Whittier residents a very happy holiday!
