This programme offers the opportunity to take part in research and hands-on learning in ancient art forms pertaining to Māori customary weaving. Nga Tapuwae o Hine-te-iwaiwa, or the footprints of Hine-te-iwaiwa, describes ones journey in the pursuit to learn and master the ancient form of weaving. Hine-te-iwaiwa, as kaitiaki (guardian) of the weaving also becomes the kaitiaki for this journey. Students will learn various practices for preparing a range of materials for weaving and using these to specialise in either raranga (kete), whatu (cloak making) or tukutuku (lattice wall panels) to create artworks. On completion of this programme, students will have gained knowledge and competency to be able to prepare for plan and produce woven art forms to a high standard with the ability to present these for exhibition or other forms of public display.
