Whitireia Community Polytechnic (Whitireia) is a government owned and funded tertiary institute of technology, known for its high student success rates and culturally diverse student body. Established in 1986, on the shores of the Porirua harbour, Whitireia has grown to become a tertiary institution of choice for over 8,000 students (over 4,700 equivalent full-time students), who study at one of our contemporary campuses in Porirua, Wellington, KÄ piti and Auckland. In 2017 over 120 programmes of study will be offered to students, covering certificate, diploma, degree, postgraduate and masters levels. All programmes have been developed in conjunction with industry to offer excellent applied qualifications; all approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. The New Zealand Film and Television School is one of the only industry-run schools of its kind in New Zealand. It is unique with its visiting tutor programme where tutors come into the school direct from industry to teach all there is to know about film. With the recent shift to digital, the Film School boasts a state-of-the art Arri-Alexa camera for training and filming projects, a high-end digital camera closest to 35mm film and in line with cinema and feature filmmaking.

Two programmes of study are offered; the National Certificate in Radio (Foundation Skills) and Diploma in Radio Journalism (Broadcasting), covering all the things students need to know for a career in commercial radio including copywriting, audio production, radio sales, podcasting, promotions, multimedia, (video, photography, blogging and social media) and live broadcasting. radio documentaries, creative broadcasting or industry internships (where available). Secondary School Leaver Fee Scholarships We are pleased to offer Secondary School Leaver Fee Scholarships to students at selected secondary schools in the Wellington region. Each scholarship is valued at up to $4,000 and assists with tuition costs for the first year of study on one of our multi-year diploma or degree programmes. Publishing Scholarships Scholarships are available for students studying on one of our publishing programmes. These include:

Mason Publishing Scholarship This scholarship is for students studying publishing at a tertiary education provider in New Zealand. Applications close on 31 January each year. The scholarship is awarded to the successful recipient for the year in which they apply and contributes to tuition fees for one academic year.

If you choose to study at our campuses in Porirua, KÄ piti, Wellington, Auckland and by distance, you access academic support through Poutama Academic Learning Services. Academic support is available in classes, small groups, from a peer tutor, one-to-one and through our online Moodle site. All services are delivered by professional staff and are free.

A fully licensed childcare centre is located at our Porirua campus. Spaces are limited so an early enquiry is recommended. For more information call 04 237 7842.

Confidential budgeting advice is available. This service also provides information on grants, scholarships and emergency funding.

Careers Advice Our Career Consultant is located at our Porirua campus. Careers advice and support is available to you.

Counselling A confidential, seven-day, 24-hour self-referral counselling service is provided off-campus by Vitae. Vitae is a professional company that provides you with access to a team of independent counsellors and psychologists throughout New Zealand. You are entitled to three free counselling sessions per year.

Health A health nurse is available by appointment at our Porirua campus. This service is free. Other health services available include a doctor, physiotherapist, massage therapist and hearing therapist. There may be a minimal charge for some of these services. Medical appointments can be arranged for those studying at our campuses in Wellington, KÄ piti and Auckland.

Job Broker As a student you can access the services of our job broker to help you prepare for work (CV and interview preparation) and also gain access to employers who may have positions available. Look out for job boards around our campuses and also online, here we will list job vacancies that may be of interest to you.

Library Our library provides access to a wide range of resources including books, journals, audio-visual items, newspapers, many online databases, ebooks, study spaces and computers. Information skills training is available. A distance library service is provided if you are studying by distance or if you are only on campus for a short time.

Polyshop Prescribed texts (at 10% discount) and second-hand texts are available at the on-site Polyshop at our Porirua campus. A full range of stationery at very competitive prices, greeting cards, overseas calling cards and a range of other items are available for sale also. We also offer mobile phone recharging facilities and we are a dry-cleaning agency.

Student Hub The Student Hub is both a service and a place for you. The service provides free and independent advocacy and advice. It’s also a place to get involved in the student voice, where you can put forward your ideas about teaching and learning, events and activities or anything to do with your experience with us.

Māori Students Our Pou Whakamanawa (Māori Success Advisor) will respond to Māori students concerns. Advice and support is offered across a range of areas including educational, cultural, spiritual, economic, social and sometimes personal growth; they can also act as a mentor.

Pacific Students Our Pacific Success Advisor provides academic, cultural and pastoral support to Pacific students. Programmes and networks have been developed to support and enhance the academic success of Pacific students.

Ako Ake Café This is a dedicated study space for Māori and Pacific students located at our Porirua campus.

Youth Students Moving from secondary school to a polytechnic can be a big change. We have set up a number of support services to help youth make a successful transition.

FAQs How do I apply to enrol? Apply to enrol either in person, online or by post.

What do I need to provide? A completed Application to Enrol form, a verified copy of your birth certificate or passport plus any additional entry requirement information (such as health declaration, references, safety check, criminal conviction declaration, record of learning, academic transcripts/records) if applicable.

Can I bring a photocopy of my birth certificate?

How and when do I get my student ID card?

Yes, if it has been verified (signed) by a solicitor, Justice of the Peace (JP) or kaumātua. We can also photocopy and verify your original documents for you.

After your enrolment has been completed, visit our Information & Enrolment team and they’ll organise it for you. You will need a student ID card to print, photocopy, access the library, the computer networks and other student support services at Whitireia.

How do I get a student loan or allowance? Apply online at www.studylink. govt.nz. You should do this well before your programme starts so it’s processed in plenty of time.

Why do we ask for your birth certificate or passport?

How long does it take to confirm my enrolment?

We need proof of your legal name, date of birth and citizenship or residency. If your name has changed you will also need to provide proof of the change e.g. marriage certificate.

If you’ve brought in or sent us everything we need, it will usually take between two and five working days.

When do I pay my fees? After you have been offered a place on your programme and you have confirmed your acceptance, you can pay your fees.

In signing this Application to Enrol form, I undertake to pay all fees as they become due, and to meet any late fees and collection charges associated with debt recovery. The Whitireia policy on withdrawal and refund of fees may be obtained from Information & Enrolment.

Whitireia reserves the right to cancel or postpone any of the courses and/or programmes and shall not be liable for any claim other than the proportion of course/programme fees which the cancelled portion bears. Whitireia and WelTec are working together to offer students more study options and more places to study. To do this, WelTec and Whitireia share student information for the purposes of planning delivery and to make sure students have access to the services they need. Shared services include Library and Information Services, Learning Support, Disability Support, Careers Advice, and the confidential management of student complaints.

When required by law, we will release information to government agencies as directed.
