One of the oldest cars out in National Hot Rods yet Sammy Shuddall is still winning with it and in a qualifying position as the end of 2012 approaches

WJS EDITORIAL The end of a year is a always a sad point, a low where the driver or fan realises that there’s no more meetings until the Spring (barring of course Wimbledon). As a fan it makes you think about all the racing you’ve watched and the meetings you’ve missed, for 2013 I’ll personally will be aiming to see more Hot Rod meetings. PAUL BALLARD

Championship Round-up

6th October

14th October

Lightning Rods - Irish Championship - Tullyroan

Stock Rods - British Championship - Hednesford

Son of Mervyn McReynolds Jordan Rochford won his first major title in Lightning Rods when he was able to nip past David Hearst in traffic. Reigning champion Stephen Emerson had sit out the event now banned after refusing to have his car scrutineered at the World Final, Emerson finished the race first but was docked two places for contact.

The result of the Stock Rod British Championship held at Hednesford changed several times after race stewards and then scrutineers affected the major places. First over the line was Chris LaCka who was docked 2 places for contact during the race handing the victory to 2011 winner Raymond Harper. However, Hodges failed post-race scrutineering allowing the winner to be declared as Stuart Smyth. Smyth’s latest title success has meant he now won all 5 major titles in Stock Rods – World, National, European, British and English/ ScoCish or Irish. He joins the elite band of Mel Cooke, Alan Connolly and LaCka who have all achieved the same feat.

Irish Championship: 977, 926, 937, 924, 921, 971, 984, 902, 940, 961 Irish Revenge: 987, 937, 924, 921, 955, -, 961

13th October 2 Litre Hot Rods - Irish Championship - Tullyroan Derek Martin won the Irish 2L Hot Rod title at Tullyroan ahead of Shane Murray and Adam Hylands. The grid was formed via points scored throughout this season, Martin started on the front row alongside pole-siCer Murray. Martin regains the title he had won in 2010. With Tullyroan operating for the first time in 2012 it was the first since in 10 years the event hadn’t been held at NuCs Corner.

It was the first time that the title has been held at Hednesford in 32 year history of the championship; Cowdenbeath has held the event a record ten times. The most successful driver in this championship is LaCka who has won the event four times and was unlucky not to make this title number five. Heat 1: 447, 658, 74, 61, 647, 876, 900, 7, 197, 171 Heat 2: 823, 171, 924, 928, 232, 447, 658, 144, 136, 647 British Championship: 447, 924, 658, 171, 232, 61, 876, 136, 25, 7

Busy days for Spedeworth Fabrications

Well done Jack and Tyler

The Spedeworth Fabrications workshop is busier than ever with the season slowing down for most tracks and people thinking ahead for 2013 - we have 3 x 2.0 Hot Rods in production and 4 x Superstox all in the process of being manufactured.

Following their continued emergence at Aldershot, the Junior Rods had an outing at Northampton on 6th October as an addition to the programme, and they now have a debut at Wimbledon on 2nd December as they further spread their wings as a formula! Meanwhile, the Aldershot season has finished for them and the titles went the way of 207 Jack Grandon (Points) and 330 Tyler Wilkin (FGS Race Engine Series). Well done to both of them and of course to all of the Junior Rod drivers whose enthusiasm has been impressive both through the Aldershot season and in their aCempts to persuade the Aldershot office to give them extra race dates elsewhere! Needless to say we will be looking at where we can send them next in 2013!! Thanks to Spedeworth

One meeting left With just one meeting left for the SwaKam 2 Litre Hot Rods in the 2012 season 17 Michael Benstead has a 39 point lead over 5 Terry Sewell (winner of the Gold Roof) at the top of the track points. With 40 points up for grabs at the last meeting it is still mathematically possible for Sewell to overpower Benstead at the top of the table. The baCle however is definitely on for second and third places with 371 Mark Sewell only 3 points behind Terry whilst being 10 points ahead of 19 Luke Retchless. The last date of the season for the 2 Litre Hot Rods takes place on Sunday 18th November at SwaKam.

Hillson Cup 2.0 Hot Rods

28th October 2 Litre Hot Rods - Northampton When everyone is complained about the doom and gloom, blaming the economy for destroying oval classes it was refreshing to see new cars and new drivers in the class. The biggest name to return to the formula (after a two year stint in National Hot Rods) was the 2007 World Champion 60 Mark Paffey in a new Ludlow Nova. His previous car has been campaigned most recently by 88 Dale Atkins. The other new cars were 11 Alex Crane in an all-black Saxo and 48 Leyton Milsom in a bright orange Ford Fiesta mk3; contrary to what the commentator said about Milsom “racing his familiar orange Fiesta” his previous car was a Nova and it was grey! Then add onto that the

new Incarace drivers: ex-Buxton racer 5 Marc Gould in a Peugeot 206 (strangely a car never that common in the class), ex-Stock Rodder 928 Dave Leech in a Tim Barnes built Peugeot 206cc and ex-Lightning Rodder 81 Lee Parsons in a Ford Fiesta mk4 that Barry Limer had been campaigning earlier in the year. 33 cars raced. The formula still races in graded order (for the time being!) but a slight amendment to the rules recently means that all drivers are lined in points chart order within each grade. All drivers have to book in the Thursday before the meeting to be given a grid position otherwise they will start from the back of the grid. Paffey, Leech, Gould and 503 Ben Murray all started at the back of the grid – but this was for having new tyres.

Heat 1 The only white top for the day 151 Robert Ashman led the race until he stopped on the outside of turn 2 (he would later retreat to the safety of the centre). 22 Dan Payne inherited the lead with 118 Lewis Shelley on his tail but both were passed quickly by 75 Chris Crane. Crane moved to the outside and cleared both drivers with ease. Shelley took inspiration from this and copied the move for second place. Res: 75, 118, 96, 537, 310, 22, 7, 3, 88, 31

Jason Busby. This eventually become the race for second place, Moss retired with a few laps to run, Busby led the other two. Smith moved by Randell on the final lap to snatch third place. Paffey didn’t seem that quick through the heats but from 28th on the grid he raced up to 6th place in the final. Res: 537, 87, 565, 96, 118, 60, 22, 3, 543, 745 It was a poor day for joint points leader 65 Mark Willis who failed to make the top 10 and 39 Rick Pannell who ended up in the fence in heat 2.

Heat 2

The grid positioning is likely to cause a few issues for the class and it would be beCer for them to have a radio sys537 Billy Clarke pulled away from the front of the blues tem like National Hot Rods. Billy Clarke should feel hard and moved by D Payne and 38 Mark Constable for the done for being disqualified in heat 2 because who is to lead. Res: 745, 96, 3, 22, 182, 7, 75, 118, 38, 543 Each driver should have started every race in the same position yet Parsons started the first heat and the final at Final the front of the reds while heat 2 he was at the back of that grade. If officials feel Clarke should be removed the The last race of the event was the weCest of all and the same standard should then be applied to all the reds that cars took a few laps to get used to conditions; a variation moved forward one position in the same race. Lone white top 82 Lee Dawson led the majority of the race until a stoppage about 5 laps to go. 192 Anthony Lawrence and 359 Geoff Bowen clashed going through turns 3 and 4, before Bowen spun out down the home straight. This left Bowen facing the wrong way on the track and was then hit hard head-on by 730 Mike Daniels.
