art scene movie, combining mountain biking with a great storyline. Crankworx likely took its cues from its winter predecessor — the World Ski and Snowboard Festival (WSSF), which has always had a major arts and music component reflecting Whistler’s deep-rooted ski culture. Though Whistler may be a ski and bike town at heart, the arts and culture of those sports have always played a significant role in our collective conscience. And it doesn’t end there. The Whistler Film Festival, billed as “the coolest film fest in North America”, has deep roots in the community as does the Whistler Writers Festival. In more recent years, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) has been coming to Whistler to play free outdoor concerts over the Canada Day long weekend. The VSO also offers a summer institute for young musicians. So while summertime visitors may come for the double black trails and the biggest bike park in the world, we like to think they stay a little longer because Whistler is so much more than an awesome place to ride bikes.
