took around three hours and we arrived just before the 12 o’clock kick-off between Netherseal St. Peters and Renishaw Rangers. The game was basically a friendly but billed as an invitational cup final. Renishaw were late replacements for the fantastically named Welsh side Garth Vader who, at the last minute, couldn’t make the trip from the small village of Garth near Maesteg in south Wales. Renishaw scored in just the fourth minute, but Netherseal equalised just four minutes later to make it 1-1. Renishaw dominated most of the match, but it took until the 73rd and 76th minute for them to score again.

They were presented with a trophy after the game and then most of the crowd awaited the Central Midlands League Chairman’s Cup Final at three. Several groundhoppers, including myself, had other ideas though and headed for another game elsewhere. Peel Croft is such a wonderful venue for sport and you can almost feel the history inside. Tragically, it is going to be demolished in the near future, replaced by yet another retail park in the town centre. It may be ‘going for a Burton’ soon, but it certainly won’t be forgotten by both the football and rugby fans, who’ve visited throughout the decades.
