As you may have realized, we have gradually moved the focus of the magazine from Ghana to the rest of Africa. We have also rebranded the magazine to be more reflective of what we stand for, thus combining our two flagship publications (Which Ghana and Which Africa) under a new name – African Consumers. Our one main objective is to attract a wider readership within Africa and beyond, as such we have moved the publication into the 21st century, by making it available through various media – Newsletters, On Digital, Online, Smartphone & Tablets, where you can read or download the magazine (www.Africanconsumers.org). Going forward, we set out to create a community in which people share their stories, as such we are also giving our readership the chance to interact more with us and with each other by increasing our presence on the social media. The right to redress – getting fair settlement of just claims, including compensation for misrepresentation, shoddy goods or unsatisfactory services. Social responsibility – awareness and sensitivity around the impact of your actions on other citizens and on prevailing economic and social realities. Ecological responsibility - heightened sensitivity of the impact of consumer decisions on the physical environment, with a focus on environmental conservation. Solidarity – using the power of numbers of citizen groups to attract attention to consumer interests. In 40 years, the industry has come a long way. The mobile phone has revolutionised the world, countries where land lines are a rarity can conduct business, a report shows that both Africa and India’s GDP has increased by 5% because of the mobile phone.

In a world of 7 billion people, 6 billion own a mobile phone. It is estimated that by 2016 there will be a billion mobile phones on the continent of Africa alone.

A little over a decade ago there were about 100,000 phone lines in Nigeria, Today Nigeria has close to 100 million mobile phone lines, making it Africa’s largest telecoms market, according to statistics by the Nigerian Communications Commission.

Last October, for the first time ever, the number of Nigerians accessing the internet via their mobiles surpassed the number of desktop internet users, figures from Statcounter show.


The mobile phone is fast becoming a key advertising platform in Africa. For example, 47% of consumers confirm they use their smartphone to search for local information such as a local store they want to visit. 56% of us use our mobiles to sign into social media sites such as facebook and twitter. So tell me, do you have a mobile friendly website? If not, it’s time to make a change.

But, Be Careful……. It is generally agreed that using a hand-held mobile phone while driving is a distraction that brings risk of road traffic accidents. So we need to use hands free sets to avoid such hazards.

The potential impact of the kind of electromagnetic fields generated by cellular phones on the human brain has been a subject of debate recently.

WILL THE HUMBLE PC EVER BECOME OBSOLETE?

Is the death of the PC imminent?

T

he days of paying for costly software upgrades are numbered. Sales of personal computers — including laptops and desktops — are at a record low. According to research firm IDC, global sales of PCs dropped 14% last quarter — nearly double what the analysts expected. Mobile has grown to take a significant portion of Web traffic, for example 56% of us use our mobiles to sign into social media sites such as facebook and twitter; and this number will continue to grow. It is fast becoming a key advertising platform in Africa. For example, 47% of consumers confirm they use their Smartphone to search for information such as a local stores and services. For web-browsing, Internet banking, word processing and presentations, we can see a move towards mobile devices and hence an overall PC sales decline. This can be exacerbated if file systems such as DropBox becomes more popular.Whereas plenty of

businesses in Europe see the importance of having a mobile-optimized site, however less than two percent of business websites in Africa are optimized for mobile systems, according to an estimate by technical experts. hana has been ranked as the country with the highest mobile broadband penetration in Africa, says a recent International Telecommunications Union (ITU) report.

viders get away with providing us such poor quality of services? Is it because most of us are not doing anything about it, but rather shrugging our shoulders and accepting to settle for less?

Today Nigeria has close to 100 million mobile phone lines, making it Africa’s largest telecoms market.

Together we can do something about it by voting with our feet and move our service to another service provider!

But are we getting good value for our money in Africa? Take the case of an SME that recently engaged the services of Vodafone Ghana for their Broadband service. Service installed on 1st June, no internet on the 4th. Took Vodafone 5 days to resolve the matter. Internet service down again on the 17th; this time it took another 5 days to resolve the issue. The SME promptly cancelled their contract with Vodafone and engaged another service provider. Millions of Africa Consumers are running out of patience with poor service quality among mobile phone operators.

Mobile Number Portability (MPN) allows you to move from one mobile service provider to another without changing your mobile phone number. It empowers you to terminate your relationship with your current network service provider if you are dissatisfied with the quality of services provided. How do these providers get away with providing us such poor quality of services? Take the case of Michelle; she reported MTN keeps deducting her credits, even when she doesn’t use the phone! She’s still waiting for MTN to explain why this is the case! In late November, the Ghana telecoms regulator banned South African group MTN, Ghana’s most popular network with 11.7m subscribers, from selling new SIM cards because of call drops and deteriorating service. or months now, the world of sports has lurched from one doping crisis to another. The most high profile being the raft of recent positive doping tests, most damagingly involving two of history’s fastest men, Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell.
