And when they’re in the shop, Stud Boy Traction’s mechanics uses on-shore and in-house made products and material whenever possible. Products like their Pro Series Backers and Shaper Bars offer superior traction to anything else available in the market today because Stud Boy Traction focuses on designing features that give a strong edge on the competition. You can also find top notch studs, stud support nuts, stud backers, and wearbars. Not only are these high quality features proven to be strong in the lab but also on the field. On Roads and Race Tracks A Look at the 107 Years of History

Written By < / Tom Edwards>

In 1897 Ransom Eli Olds established the Olds Motor Vehicle

Company in Lansing, Michigan. He left the company in 1904 after differences with the board and began manufacturing cars using his initials as the name of his new business. In 1909 he began building trucks that quickly became well known for their power and durability. They were the world’s first pick-up trucks. Six years after the success of those vehicles he initiated the construction of the R.E.O. Speedwagon. Rock music fans will recognize that name as a Champaign, Illinois based band. When you consider the name they chose for their group, it isn’t surprising that “Back on the road again” and “Give me a ride” are among the songs they have recorded. The connection between Oldsmobile and rock music goes back decades.

PAGE 10

I o o c a c a

In 1951 Ike Turner recorded “Rocket 88”, one of his earliest songs. It reached number one on the Billboard Rhythm and Blues chart and many consider it the first rock and roll record. Ike wasn’t the only musician to have an Oldsmobile mentioned in a song.

The Jerry Lee Lewis song “Middle Aged Crazy” opens with “Today he traded in his big ’98 Olds. He got a heck of a deal on a Porsche car”. On “Let Yourself Go” one of my favorite bands, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers state “Got a 442 sittin’ in the sun. Photography By < / Tom Edwards>

For years, Oldsmobile was well represented in the world of professional drag racing. Warren Johnson earned six NHRA Pro Stock championships and has 97 national event wins. He was the first to exceed 180, 190 and the barrier breaking 200 MPH in the Pro Stock class. No surprise here, he was driving and tuning an Oldsmobile for a number of those victories. Also in the Pro Stock class, Jerry Haas enjoyed success behind the wheel of an Oldsmobile. In the Funny Car category Mike Dunn drove Joe Pisano’s great looking Olds fuel coupe. John Force, a 16 time champion had many national event wins in his Castrol GTX sponsored Funny Car. Driving a McDonald’s back flopper, Cruz Pedregon also showed you can be the first to the finish line in an Oldsmobile. Between rounds at a national event, watching the Jolly Rancher backed wheel standing Oldsmobile van was always fun.

For years, Oldsmobile was well represented in the world of professional drag racing.

PAGE 12

Among the most well-known names in motor sports for decades is Linda Vaughn; Miss Hurst Golden Shifter. One of her Hurst/ Olds cars sold at a Barrett-Jackson auction for $200,000. I had the pleasure of meeting her at a race in Pomona, California and was amazed at her encyclopedic knowledge of Pro Stock racing. During the Vietnam War, Linda was on a USO tour of military bases with NASCAR legend Richard Petty (not Tom’s brother) and drag racing icon “Big Daddy” Don Garlits. As a Vietnam veteran I appreciate Linda’s support of those serving in the military.

I am a fan of all things automotive, so it was nice to see a sign in Hugo, Minnesota for the upcoming 40th Minnesota Oldsmobile Club show. My wife Cathy also enjoys a wide array of cars so it was easy to find time in our schedules to attend. For me it had “Photo shoot” written all of it. Bringing my camera turned out to be a good idea. Like every car show we attend that focuses on cars from days gone by, the cars in Hugo represented a wide range of years with a majority looking like that had rolled off the assembly line earlier that day. Just amazing vehicles. I had a nice conversation with a gentleman and his wife that have 15 years into their restoration of a 1956 that was beyond mint condition. The car, literally, didn’t look like it was 60 hours old, much less 60 years. Cathy and I also saw a ’56 that had undergone a rotisserie rotation and, again, it was another beyond mint car. In both cases they are cars that are driven, not trailered to shows. That’s a personal preference, but we like that. They are cars and we believe they should be driven and enjoyed. That said, with the spectacular condition of the cars at the show, I’ll go out on a limb and guess they are kept in a garage during Minnesota winters. Having lived here for 9 years I don’t remember seeing cars like these, particularly convertibles with the top down, when snow was flying. If you are an Oldsmobile fan and are near their birthplace you should check out the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum. As you can imagine, their collection of these American classics is unmatched. The last Oldsmobile to be built, an Alero, came off the assembly line in Lansing on April 29, 2004 ending an impressive 107 year run. They made their make on automotive history and maintain a passionate following. When you see dozens of them in museum quality condition, it’s easy to see why that’s the case. /

July 28, 2016 – Levi LaVallee is making plans to help the Sno Barons snowmobile club celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hay Days in a very big way. With a long list of action sport accomplishments to his credit including the world record snowmobile distance jump of 412feet, Levi will break out the ramps and launch the Hay Days celebration (and himself) with a 200-foot distance jump on September 10 in North Branch, Minnesota. Heralded as one of the sports biggest and most recognizable athletes, Levi is synonymous with snowmobile competition, having won a national snocross title, 7 X-Games gold medals, and has appeared on several national television shows including the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Good Morning America and ESPN. With two record distance jumps to his credit, Levi will attempt a 200foot plus ramp-to-ramp jump as part of the 50th anniversary celebration at the world’s biggest snowmobile event. “Hay Days is just an awesome event,” said LaVallee. “I’ve been going since I was a kid and to now be a part of the 50th celebration is really special.” With humble beginnings as little more than a gathering of club members, Hay Days has grown to become the biggest snowmobile event in the world with more than 50,000 fans in attendance along with every major manufacturer, aftermarket company, dealer, and athlete. Today, Hay Days is the place to see and be seen for the entire snowmobile industry. PAGE 18

utchinson, Minnesota is home to family owned Rath Racing – a manufacturing company made by racers for racers. Since 1992, they’ve been keeping their business small to collaborate with riders so their products can provide a huge outcome on the track for ATVs and UTVs. All of Rath Racing’s products are crafted from raw metal in shop, and that’s the secret ingredient to the enormous amount of championships they’ve helped score. Daryl Rath’s passion for motorsports began on the three-wheeler his dad gifted to him as a kid and grew as he learned to repair and create components for his own machines. When you can’t find Daryl in his shop, you can find him putting his products to the ultimate test – racing on the track!

National Raceway Event

July 8th - 10th 2016

Written By < / David Pruszka > The NHRA Joliet Route 66 Nationals took place on a picture perfect day week end second to none that I have ever attended. temperatures in the mid 80’s and cooling a bit on Sunday brought out a large crowd. The JEG’S Allstars finals in this central location pitted man East Coast drivers against West Coast drivers for unpredictable outcomes. Local favorite Bob Bode’s qualifying run wheelstand did no substantial damage upon returning to Earth but kept him in the stratosphere showing off the photo of this exciting event the next day. Many records were broken, and positions jostled around for drivers hoping to gain entry into the season ending Countdown to the finals starting following the Labor Day Weekend US Nationals in September...
