PUBLISHER’S NOTE

What’s CONTACT On! On! What’s Port Coquitlam

I can’t believe that it’s been a whole year since I started What’s On! Port Coquitlam. Although our first issue wasn’t out until May, I actually began the magazine in February. So it was kinda exciting working on this sixth issue. Just to see how far we’ve come in twelve months.

TM

Owner Publisher: Cathy Minler 778.886.9452 Email: whatsonpoco@live.com

I had no idea what to expect when I started or the path that it would lead me on. But in that time I’ve met so many amazing people and learned all about the tireless work that the community groups do to make Port Coquitlam the great little community that it is. I’ve also gotten the opportunity to know the Mayor and his hardworking team and to see how much they love PoCo.

What’s On! Port Coquitlam would like to take this opportunity to introduce our featured photographer, Jason Kenzie. Jason has been taking all the photos for our photos and pet pages and recently shot our cover image for the January/February issue. Jason has been a photographer for 20 years specializing in animal photography. During these years he has been searching the world for people who own the most amazing animals. “I look for the adventurous side of all my journeys. I love the smile that is placed on the owners faces when they view the photos I have captured. Traveling to different locations, experiencing the culture and the awestruck beauty this world has to offer.” Some of Jason’s projects have taken him to TV as well. The TV series “Life Through My Lens, is a project about him showcasing the true love that people have for their amazing pets, bears, tigers, porcupines, alligators, monkeys, zebras and more right down to your faithful dog, cat or lizard. The Photo Warrior Chronicles is about a wildlife photographer searching the North American wilderness for the many animals that no person dares to get close to - the Kermode Bear, the dangerous Timber wolf, the majestic moose, etc. Before photography Jason started his life as a dance instructor performing all around North America and then while traveling in Florida he teamed up with a professional photographer looking to photograph the elusive Key Deer and the aggressive alligator. The dangers were a thrill and he was instantly hooked on photography. Since then he has had his photos published in a large variety of magazines and newspapers.

MAYOR’S CORNER My Top Five Favourite PoCo Places 1. PoCo Traboulay Trail I love the 46 kms of trails we have throughout our community. My wife Erin and I go for walks with our yellow lab Molly every morning on a trail. When I commute to work I try to take a trail. As a child I grew up in Lincoln Park next to Hyde Creek nature reserve and all of the wonderful trails provided hours of fun.

2. Local Restaurants PoCo has many wonderful restaurants. Erin and I love going out to enjoy the local cuisine. There are so many great restaurants to choose from depending on what we’re in the mood for.

3. Family Friendly Neighbourhoods Growing up in Lincoln Park I enjoyed riding my bike around the streets with my friends. Today Erin and I enjoy cruising around the streets on our bikes. It’s great seeing so

many families out - kids playing street hockey and couples going for an evening stroll.

4. Downtown PoCo Downtown PoCo encompasses the small-town charm that we love about our town. It’s got a great vibe - whether it’s during the day seeing people busy at work, shopping or in the evening enjoying one of our great restaurants or having a fun night out at the Giggle Dam or PoCo Bowl. I truly believe that learning doesn’t have a limit and that hair dressing is a perfect example of that. That’s why I’m committed to constantly improving my work, by going to classes and always welcoming feedback from my clients and co-workers.
