Is Mission a dog (pet) friendly city? Yes! Mission has so many outdoor community events and festivals year-round that allow on leash dogs to join in on the family fun. It’s a great opportunity for your dog to socialize, fine tune their impulse control and leash manners (Please consult a professional dog trainer before your first attempt). Where are some good places to take my dog for a walk in Mission? Mission is a gem for beautiful parks and trails to discover. Did you know, we have the longest recreational, multi-use trail network in the world in our backyard? The Trans Canada trail, more commonly known as the Dyke Trail is an iconic and wonderful on leash trail for you and your dog. My dogs and I love to hike and explore. Our favorites trails to visit on the weekends are Cranks and Hayward Lake trail. Do you have any suggestions for a good breed of dog to get if I live in a condo? All dogs need daily exercise, plenty of attention, and access to the outdoors, but Greyhounds and Bulldogs are considered the best breeds for apartment living. They are well known to be couch potatoes, but will rise to the occasion for a walk with their companion.

Does my dog need to be licensed, and if so, what for? Like most cities, the municipality of Mission does require you to register and license your dog. A license on your dog’s collar is the fastest and easiest way to find a missing pet whether found by a good Samaritan or picked up by the pound. The licensing fee also goes to supporting your local animal control/shelter, and in Mission’s case, the Community Animal Response and Education Centre (CARE). There seems to be a pet related service business on every corner in this city. How do I go about finding the right one? Personally, I like referrals from family and friends, so ask your network for recommendations or join a local group/page on social media for suggestions. A couple tips when searching: interview the potential dog daycare or walker just as much as they should be interviewing you and your dog. For grooming salons, check out their ‘before and after shots’ of different breed cuts, bring a picture of the style you want, and speak with the groomer at the appointment versus the receptionist so there is no miscommunication.
