- BY JEWELL DRURY -

Have you ever experienced a breathtaking oasis, that beckons you to leave behind the fast paced world outside, and surrender to the gift of time, health and wellness? Quietly nestled amongst five acres of native ancient melaleuca rainforest and subtropical gardens, is the Wellness Centre Port Stephens, with its grand opening on 7th October 2017. Locals and visitors are warmly welcome to attend the property between 9am and 2pm. The facility has been developed to provide a tranquil and safe environment for both residents and visitors of Port Stephens to refresh, recharge and reconnect with a range of holistic services and retreats available. Owners Mark and Cherrie McDougall have lived on the Tomaree Peninsula for more than 30 years and bought the property eight years ago from another long term local resident. Mark's dream for a health retreat first began in 2003 and with the support of Cherrie, together they searched all over the Hunter Valley, but could not find a property with the right attributes. Christmas 2008, serendipity led the couple to holiday in Canada, where a discovery focused their attention on a property they knew was for sale at One Mile. Mark who had previously worked on the property as a surveyor, intimately knew the property known at the time as O'Carrollyn's Eco Resort. Cherrie and Mark soon realized that what they had been looking for had been right here in their own backyard all along. Operating as a market garden up until the late 90’s, then as O’Carrollyn’s eco retreat, until Mark and Cherrie further developed the property over the next 8 years into what is now known as The Oasis at One Mile Beach. Finally, the dream of providing Port Stephens with its first Wellness Centre has become a reality and it is set to open this October. It will focus on Holistic Health and Wellbeing and will provide a much needed facility to run retreats, workshops and other similar events. Immediately on entering, you are struck by the beauty, energy and privacy of the property. You could be on another planet! Surrendering yourself to the beauty of the natural rainforest environment with its strong connection to nature, allows your spirit to discover a deep sense of tranquillity. The core energy of this place is very special indeed. 4

The Wellness Centre treatment area includes six treatment rooms, an Infrared Sauna, a Floatation Tank, and an Oxygen Bar where you receive concentrated oxygen infused with aromatherapy therapeutic oils. The team are highly focused on making sure that the Wellness Centre draws only the best healers and practitioners specialising in the best therapy treatments available. There will be an abundance of Wellness Centre practitioners offering support and services such as Remedial Massage and Therapy, Kinesiology, Aromatherapy, Naturopathy and Nutrition, Lomi Lomi massage, Therapeutic Laser, Reiki, Acupuncture, Essential Oils, Bowen, Mindfulness and Meditation, Hypnotherapy, Personal Coaching, Gut Health, Herbal Medicine and Zen Shiatsu. Regular Yoga and Meditation classes will be available both mid week and on weekends. Workshops and retreats will be run regularly and pre advertised at the new Wellness Centre Port Stephens. Step out of the treatment area into the sunshine and a two minute walk through the gardens will find you at a magical meeting place called “The Deck”. The Deck is the central hub to meet together. It overlooks the beautiful rainforest gardens and central billabong. This covered area is perfect for open days, expos, educational targeted programs and includes an outdoor covered kitchen/ dining area and yoga/drumming room. A covered stage overlooks the grassed area where yoga classes will be conducted under the dappled sunlight that filters through the melaleuca canopy.

W

Situated on the property are 9 beautiful cottages accommodating up to eight people in each.

Rebecca Morley and Saffron Quantrell are assisting with the business development and marketing of the Wellness Centre and are sharing the excitement with locals and visitors, as the momentum builds for the opening of the first Wellness Centre in Port Stephens.

The Wellness Centre has been created as a place where people can be treated in a safe and discreet environment. “A place to renew… A place to be YOU!”

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY -

Training To Save Lives - BY JEWELL DRURY -

Another round of training courses begin in October and the club is looking for new members. Encouraging not just senior nippers and teenagers to sign up to learn how to be surf lifesavers, but also parents, uncles, aunts and other family members to join. In addition to beach patrols, Birubi Point Cadets, ranging in age from 13-17 years, meet most Fridays for an informal fun paddle and swim session, followed by a sausage sizzle. Parents who are qualified surf lifesavers also join in the fun on Friday nights. It is a great opportunity for both children and adults to meet new people, improve their water skills and share experiences. The Club has a relaxed and informal atmosphere with several social functions being held during the year, with an emphasis on fun family-friendly events.

Birubi Point Surf Life Saving Club has undergone an amazing transformation in the last 3 years since they moved into their new Clubhouse. However, a surf club is only as good as its members and how well they are trained in preparation to save lives when on beach patrol. Birubi’s training team of 12 is led by experienced nurse, Alison Gannon. Alison manages the training program and ensures every trainee is provided with all the information and skills training to be a surf lifesaver. Training includes learning about surf awareness, first aid, spinal management, radio procedures and learning how to work together as part of a team. The Birubi Point Surf Life Saving training team includes school teachers, a former member of the Australian Defence Force, HSC students, a lifeguard and tradies who all give up their time to train new surf lifesavers. The trainers and assessors of Birubi Point Surf Life Saving Club are all experienced life savers and enjoy sharing their knowledge and experiences with trainees. Noah Gannon and Caleb Faragher are Birubi Point’s newest trainers, with both having come through the Club as Nippers and then later qualified as surf life savers. Now studying for the HSC, Caleb started out as a Junior Surf Lifesaver, “Nipper” with Noah spending several years as a swim squad member.

Birubi Point Surf Life Saving Club invite children aged from 13 through to young adults, parents and those still young at heart, to help keep our beach safe during the patrolling season, 2017. Interested parties are welcome to come along to the information/registration day to find out how satisfying, fun and rewarding being a surf lifesaver can be. If you are nervous in the water or unable to pass the swim test, but still want to be a part of the club patrols, you can still be a vital part of the team, by becoming an award member. The only qualification necessary to become an award member is a first aid certificate. It’s never too late to wear the red and yellow patrol uniform!

How to get involved: Information/Registration Day is being held in the Birubi Point’s Surf Life Saving Clubroom, Sunday September 17, 2017 from 3-5pm. Further information is on the Clubs website: www. birubipointslsc. org.au. (Click on ‘Become a Member’) or you can contact Alison Gannon, Chief Instructor at: alisonctobirubi@ gmail.com

Family Fitness

For Life!

As parents and even grandparents, we are the front line educators, mentors, heroes and role models in our children’s lives, and the choices we make in our own lives have a direct impact on our children’s growing beliefs and attitudes. We lead (and teach) by example, so if we choose to lead a sedentary life, chances are our children will too. But if we live a healthy and active lifestyle, we in turn encourage our children to do the same! ZONE ACTIVE, owned and operated by Kate & Valeriy Martynov, is a fully equipped centre featuring a CrossFit Gym, Gymnastics Club, Playgym and a purpose built dance studio which is now the new home of Bay Dance Academy, which is proudly celebrating its 10th year of Dance this year! There are even pre-school dance classes available for little ones. Adults classes in CrossFit are scheduled to allow parents to get a work out while the kids are also happily participating in classes. The NEWEST addition in the timetable for Term 4 is ACRODANCE: the amazing combination of Acrobatic Skills within a Dance Routine. This Spring Kate and Valeriy have added to the “family tree”, by welcoming three additional health, fitness and wellbeing experts to the Zone Active Centre, to bring the most extensive range of fitness activities together under one roof. Together, they are providing fitness classes and activities for pre-schoolers through to grandparents; encouraging more people to get active and enjoy longer, healthier lives. FITBUNS & CORE is owned and operated by Gabrielle McMann, a Specialist Trainer and Accredited Provider of the NSW & ACT Physical Activity & Lifestyle Program ‘BEAT IT’.

“Exercise is medicine and like medicine, it needs to be administered safely and properly.” – Gabs McMann Gabs classes are suitable for those at risk of, or living with a chronic condition; type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, COPD, musculoskeletal conditions, for injury recovery/management, or just for general health and weight loss. For someone with a chronic condition wanting to exercise at a fitness facility, it is important there is a trainer who will keep an eye on them, train them safely, who understands their condition, ask how they were feeling after their last session, if they have any niggles or pain that day or change in medications, as this all needs to be taken into consideration before the client starts exercising on the day. All exercises can be tailored to the individual and with a great imagination, classes are fun and full of laughter. Gabs’ services include personal training, private group sessions, children/teen 6

fitness, boxing/ kickboxing, aqua fitness and dietary advice. Although classes are open to all ages, Gabs has a special interest in over 50’s fitness. JAZANCE FITNESS is owned and operated by Gráinne Myles, a Personal Trainer, Zumba® Fitness Instructor and internationally accredited Cancer Exercise Specialist. Gráinne is also an Intuitive Wellness Coach & Reiki Practitioner, and runs an on-line Health, Wellness and Beauty business. “My passion is helping others feel good about themselves and achieving their goals regardless of age, gender or ability level,” she says. JaZance Fitness classes include Zumba® Fitness, Zumba® for children and young adults with additional needs, as well as Matwork Pilates. As a cancer ‘Survivor & Thriver’ herself, Gráinne also provides a specialty class she created and developed after her own lengthy battle. Her inspiring EMPOWER class is a gentle exercise and meditation program for women affected by breast cancer, or for anyone wanting to improve their upper body strength and indulge in a little meditation. Along with Gabs, Gráinne also runs gentle aquatic fitness classes specifically for people recovering from injury or illnesses such as cancer as well as those with musculoskeletal conditions, requiring pre-and rehabilitation. All exercises can be tailored to the individual.

“I am incredibly fortunate and grateful to be able to share my passion every day with beautiful people and my mantra is: “love your SELF” – Gráinne Myles ZENERGY ONE HEALTH, FITNESS & WELLNESS is owned/operated by Cherene Thomas-Smith, an Aerial Yoga and Pole Dance Master Trainer, Barre Pilates, Fusion Yoga & Core Vinyasa Instructor and Holistic Health, Wellness, Nutrition and Weight Loss coach. “Life’s too short for it not to be awesome, and first and foremost we believe that getting FIT should be FUN! Clubs&Classes INTRODUCING

Vim Lane and Iyengar Yoga to Port Stephens

I believe everyone can do yoga. It’s just a matter of how.

- BY VIM LANE, VIM LANE YOGA -

Upcoming Workshop: Is Your Lower Back Feeling Stiff & Tight? The common causes of this condition are either stiffness in the ligaments or muscles of the lower back. Poor posture & lack of exercise usually lead to tight & swollen back muscles resulting in pain in this area. Even you don’t have lower back issues, come join Vim Lane, Sydney based yoga teacher (certified Iyengar yoga teacher), for a well-being yoga sequence designed to free up the lower back area. We'll do the sequence together so you can follow the teacher. No experience required. Ideal for newcomers to yoga or for those seeking a gentle weekend practice. Where: Corlette Community Hall, 49 Sandy Point Rd When:

Saturday 28th October - 2.00 to 4.00pm yoga followed by herbal tea

Cost:

$15.00

Enrol before 16 Oct & mention “What’s On In Our Backyard” to receive 50% discount. Register: 0402 551 489 / vimyoga@aapt.net.au www.findyoga.com.au/studio/vimlaneyoga

It’s been more than 20 years since I rolled out my yoga mat for the first time and I can honestly say my health is all the better for it. Having burnt the candle from both ends for too many years my energy was absolutely depleted. Yoga fixed that. I moved to a new suburb when a sandwich board on the pavement caught my eye, “Iyengar Yoga – upstairs”. This interested me. “Yes,” I thought to myself, “this is what I should be doing.” I had tried yoga in my university years and enjoyed it. I always felt great after each session. My interest in yoga pursued to teacher training in the Iyengar method and became a career. Teaching what I learn on the mat brings me great pleasure. At present I teach at a boutique studio that I share with another Iyengar yoga teacher. All these years later I’m still rolling out my mat, excited about what the poses will reveal to me. What new information will I glimpse through the exploration of these wonderful shapes bestowed to us by the great gurus? Every day I discover something different about the poses and about myself. Over the years my yoga practice has helped not only my physical body but my mental state of mind too. And more importantly, taught me how to cope with the emotional ups and downs life presents us. I live in Sydney and visit friends and family in Port Stephens quite regularly. I’ve fallen in love with the area and hope to establish regular monthly yoga workshops. So, what is Iyengar Yoga you may be asking yourself? And how does it differ from other yoga? Well, here is a brief synopsis: A classical style of yoga that uses precise techniques and instructions to correct anatomical and physiological alignment and to connect the body, mind and breath. Props may be used to bring a deeper understanding to the poses. I hope you’ll join me at my next workshop in Corlette and together we’ll explore the magic of the poses.

How Simple Daily Rituals Enhance Health and Wellbeing - BY NIKKI SHILLING, YOGASPHERE -

Humans thrive on routine. Routine anchors us; it gives us purpose. It’s the reason why it’s important to get up each day and go to work or school and/or to make sure we have some kind of plan and lots of interests. The ancient Indian science of self-healing, Ayurveda, places the utmost importance on sticking to a healthy, daily routine. This is known as a dincharya and is something to be observed as much as possible, but without becoming rigid (since this is not healthy either). Consistency however, is the key to wellbeing on every level. Some of the daily rituals I adhere to in this vein are pretty simple – and this is the point because we all need the good stuff to become habitual.

With my son on th

After rinsing with a homemade mouth-wash, I’ll have a schooner of warm water with a pinch of pink salt and get my neti pot ready. Jala neti cleanses the nasal passages with salt water and, just like an ocean dip, clears the head and stimulates the brain. It also relieves sinus problems (chronic sinus also leads to dental issues) and colds.

As an example, one of the first things I do upon waking is scrape my tongue (with a proper tongue scraper, not a toothbrush, yuck!). Many serious illnesses (including some instances of heart disease) have, at their essence, tooth decay caused by rotten food particles. We don’t tend to salivate a lot when we are asleep so bacteria builds up during the night. If the first thing you do is go and ingest something or even if you just brush your teeth, chances are, you are just distributing that bacteria around your mouth and swallowing it, rather than being rid of it.

I’ve abided by these and other simple daily rituals for so long now that I couldn’t imagine not doing them. As for my evening routine, I was a child and young adult who never slept well. So, generally speaking, I’ll switch off technological gadgets by 8.30pm and dim the lights. This has made a massive difference to my tendency to insomnia as it helps prep the hormones for a restful sleep.

The Natural Food Collective

Our lives revolve around food, we nourish our bodies with it, celebrate with it, entertain and express affection with it. Saffron and Jewell recently headed out for a girlie road trip, based around a local “foodie” perspective. With the sun in our eyes and the wind in our hair, we set out on our journey to find some of the local family friendly restaurants, cafés and good food outlets in the Port Stephens area. First stop, MEDOWIE MACADAMIAS... Scott and Stacy Leech are owners of the 12 acre plantation. Nestled right in the middle of the macadamia plantation, is a beautiful family friendly café. The menu is impressive and includes many Macadamia nut based and gluten free choices. Medowie Macadamias has a great child friendly playground that will keep your little ones happy for hours whilst they play in the shadow of the beautiful and majestic macadamia nut trees. After stocking up the car with a generous supply of Macadamia Nuts, Saffron and I head for THE GREENHOUSE EATERY at Pacific Dunes Golf Course, Medowie. Ben Leslie has been appointed Head Chef of the Greenhouse Eatery and is well known on the Hunter region food scene. His commitment is to source and use local produce wherever possible. The array of herbs, fruit and vegetables are being supplied directly from the restaurant's own organic garden. The Greenhouse Eatery overlooks the beautiful manicured greens of the Pacific Dunes Golf Course, all the way down to the Lakes Way, framed within a picturesque Australian bushland. While you eat, there is a fenced, child-safe playground, with a huge grassy area for the little ones. There is also a new kids program called ‘Free Range Kids’, including kids golf clinics and fun nights that are designed for children, including ‘build your own burger’ nights and Schnitzel nights. School holiday programs include movie nights and disco nights too. Leaving The Greenhouse Eatery we head down the road to MURRAYS BREWERY. Our stopover at Murray’s Brewery, again proved what a terrific family friendly place it is.

Saffron and I enjoyed a game of Bocce in the sun on the beautiful outdoor court. There is plenty of space for the kids to run around, a toy box, chickens and a bird cage for the little ones to enjoy. Murray's aspires to grow on-site and source the best local small grower produce. A new veggie patch and herb garden has been established to supply fresh produce for the kitchen. An interactive kids game called ‘Pirate Bob’s Scavenger Hunt’ is popular with the children. This mobile app takes the kids on a random adventure searching for treasure on Murray’s site. Download the App, sit back, and relax while you watch the kids wear themselves out! There are activities planned for the family all year around. Leaving Murray’s we head onto Nelson Bay Road, toward the beautiful Tomaree Peninsula. Our first stop in the Bay is CORLETTE STORE in Sandy Point Rd. The store has been a local landmark since 1963 and one of the oldest businesses still operating in the Bay area. Phil Lawler has operated the store for the past 7 years and is the first friendly face that greets us on arrival. Known for its friendly staff and great food, it’s our family’s first choice for take away. People come from across the peninsula to experience what many call, “the best hamburgers in town.” The 'Burger with the lot' is huge and is by far the most popular choice and you really need to unhinge your jaw to have any chance of wrapping your mouth around it. We bid Phil and his staff adieu as we head to our next destination. Arriving in Nelson Bay and we find the only independent Health Food store in the Bay, NELSON BAY HEALTH FOODS. This store stands as a testament to servicing local families in our community for more than 30 years. Owner Tanya Dobson, a Herbalist and Iridologist, offers a holistic approach to helping people with their health and lifestyle. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and showed us their great range of quality supplements and wide variety of organic wholefoods.

Saffron and I tasted a variety of honey from local and Hunter Valley hives as well as hand picking the ingredients for our preservative free, take home muesli, which included coconut chips, flowers, raw and activated nuts, organic oats and chia. We left the store feeling invigorated to jump into spring. At the entrance of the Cascade Walk is ORGANIC EATZ. Specializing in vegan, gluten free, vegetarian and paleo choices, owner Debz is a huge believer in supporting businesses in the local region when sourcing her produce. We are invited to a tea tasting of the finest hand blended, organic teas and herbs and spices. Our favourite tea for spring was the fruity floral taste of the pear blossom organic tea. Served hot or cold this fine tea includes green rooibos, elderflower, vanilla bean and real pear pieces. Served with our tea was an array of organic nuts and beautiful dates. You really haven’t lived until you have tasted vegan activated organic pecan nuts!! Feeling rejuvenated we bid Debz farewell as we head to the next destination on our road trip. Saffron takes the wheel as we head up Church St, Nelson Bay toward All Saints Anglican Church. 'THE OPEN DOOR CAFE' is a café on Holy Ground and is open every Friday. To our surprise, pews are replaced with laced cover tables and comfy chairs. The smell of a home cooked baked dinner permeates the café, as memories of being at Nanna’s home for a Sunday dinner fill our senses. Saffron and I sit down to homemade delights, including bread and butter pudding, all reminiscent of the good ol’ days. The friendly parishioners are all volunteers and your donation assists in them covering costs as well as raising funds to give back to the community. Inside the church is also an area that little ones can play with toys and story books. Onwards to our next stop. THE BLUEWATER GRILL has recently been opened within the new Nelson Bay Golf Club. Bluewater Grill owners, Will and Tanya Semmens, are excited to finally be in their new premises.

Families are welcomed with the addition of a children’s play area strategically placed adjacent to the restaurant. Saffron and I take a window table with wrap around views of the beautiful fairways and out to Mount Tomaree, as we watch the resident kangaroos laze in the sun. I ordered a light snack of Arancini Balls, served with a deliciously refreshing side salad. Next stop Anna Bay. PASTA DI PORTO, situated in Anna Bay, is a small unique artisan family run business operated by Domenica and Peter. Domenica pursues her passion for preserving the traditional foods she grew up with, sharing her South Italian heritage, and Pasta Di Porto has received more than 100 awards. The unique range of dishes are sold to restaurants around Australia and are available to the general public to purchase. Saffron and I both chose my favourite pasta to take home to our families for dinner, the Pumpkin Parmesan and Basil Ravioli. It is heart-warming that restaurant quality fine food is available here in our very own backyard to bring home to our family and friends. Thank you Domenica, for sharing your traditional recipes from your family to the families here in Port Stephens and beyond. ‘Ciao Bella’, as we head to our next location. SPECTRUM CAFÉ is a part of Spectrum Church and was founded in 2011 with a “pay it forward” principal. The café prides itself on growing most of its own organic veggies on site as well as sourcing produce from local growers. John the main chef is trained in Mediterranean cooking and the menu is amazing. Seated on the sun filtered verandah, Saffron and I were amazed how relaxed we felt. The staff are all friendly and there is a great safe playground for the children where little ones sipped on baby chinos while their mums chatted. Leaving Spectrum brings an end to our magnificent 'foodie' road trip. There were many other places we visited which can be found on the map on pages 12 & 13. Thank you to everyone we met on our trip, the stories they told and the memories they shared.

- BY SOPHIE STOKES, IN SOFIA’S KITCHEN -

Fresh is best is a slogan most of us use – but the Little Tin Shed live it! Vincent and Frances Harris and their sons first purchased the Little Tin Shed, located in Medowie, in 1982 after a long stint of farming in the Mangrove Mountain region. The land was first farmed for garden fruit and vegetables, mostly tomatoes. Sophie Stokes But not long after, they made a move towards growing peaches and nectarines on a large scale. All excess produce was to be sold ‘at the farm gate’, literally out of an old tin shed, and before long, the locals affectionately named it, Little Tin Shed. Over the years, greater emphasis was placed on growing more fruit and vegetables, to be sold to the local community at competitive prices. This meant reaching the community, such as selling at the Farmer’s Market, and recently the invitation to take their quality products to the Farmers and Artisans Market in Toronto, which has been a highlight so far. Walking through the paddocks, one could not help but be in awe of the history of this land. From humble beginnings, this family have increased their produce to now include cabbage, spinach, celery, beetroot, lettuce, capsicum, cucumber, cauliflower, lemons, mandarins, broccoli, pumpkin, strawberries and much more. Being a Mediterranean foodie, this produce is right up my alley. I could not wait to get home and see what I might come up with. My Roasted Pumpkin recipe is perfect for a 'Meatless Monday' and so easy that even the kids will be able to get involved – which is a good thing because, as we know, involving them in the process of preparing dinner is more likely to get them eating their dinner! I hope you enjoy the recipe and make sure you get yourself down to the Little Tin Shed and grab yourself some of the best fresh produce in the Hunter Region! The LTS Medowie has been providing the Port Stephens area for over 35 years. The farm consists of three generations. Over the years there has been greater emphasis on growing a larger variety of fruit and vegetables that can be sold directly to the community. This has supported a good variety of produce that is fresh and competitively priced. A: 643 Medowie Road, Medowie T: 0432 146 977

Health&Wellbeing

Benefits of

CYCLING - BY DARREN FARLOW, SALAMANDER CYCLES -

benefits of cycling are that it gives children a boost to their self-confidence and is a great way for you to bond as a family. As for mums, dads and grandparents, there is a wonderful sense of nostalgia and freedom that comes from cycling. Regular cycling evolves into a way of life. You see happy cyclers everywhere, riding with friends, enjoying the open road and stopping for coffee. For others it’s the perfect mode of transportation, just what our minds need before starting a long day at work or the perfect way to destress on your way home. Most importantly, if we as parents cycle, we set an example for our children on how to live an active and healthy lifestyle. Understanding which type of bicycle is right for you and your family can be a daunting task. Style, brand, and price are all factors to consider. Salamander Cycles can help you determine which bicycle will best suit your needs.

In the technology driven world we live in, sometimes it is hard to switch off the screens and get physically active. Spending time together with family gets harder and harder with the demanding lives we lead. Luckily, there is no better way for the whole family to explore beautiful Port Stephens and beyond, than on a bicycle.

Whether you are looking for a mountain bike to hit the trail with, a road bike, or a classic style bike to cruise to the beach on, we are here to help.

Cycling is one of the most rewarding physical activities that the whole family can enjoy. Not only does it have physical benefits, but it also contributes to mental wellbeing for the young, old and everyone in between.

If the little ones insist on a scooter instead, we can help with that too!

Starting children out on a bicycle can instil lifelong appreciation for health and fitness. Children will feel more independent, able to get around on their own, whether going to a friend house or to school. It teaches children better travel habits and they are able to learn about the impact of those habits on the environment. Other

If you already have a bicycle, you can always bring it in for a bronze, silver or gold service. Some people enjoy cycling so much they decide to enter charity rides, triathlons, mountain bike races, or road races, and we can also help find the products you need to attain this level. We encourage you to come in, meet the team and check out what Salamander Cycles has on offer.

✠Get 10% OFF Accessories with the purchase of a bike. Bring this voucher to claim the offer.

Health&Wellbeing become more and more popular. In most cases, complementary therapies are promoted to women, however men also need and greatly benefit from these alternatives.

TIME FOR

MEN

TO BE EMPOWERED - BY JEWELL DRURY -

Local business owner of Heart Connection, Geraldine Zadkiel, is focused on men’s health and wellbeing. Geraldine has been working as a Kinesiologist for over 8 years and her passion is to reduce the effects of depression, anxiety and chronic stress in all members of the community. Did you know that every day in Australia 8 people take their lives and that the rate for men’s suicide is 3 times higher than women? According to the Australian Bureau Of Statistics, in 2015, 2,292 males took their lives compared to 735 females. The most common life events that result in suicide are family breakdown and custody issues, grief, sexual abuse, financial problems, rejection and unemployment. 90% of those who commit suicide, suffer from anxiety, depression and chronic stress that has been left untreated. Current treatment options include medication and counselling, both of which can be very effective, however exploring complementary therapies that reduce the levels of stress have

Geraldine specializes specifically with the subconscious emotional responses of fight or flight, for it is proven that when you change the subconscious response to a specific trigger, you change the outcome. Promoting a self-empowered approach to health, Geraldine teaches her clients easy practical skills to manage emotions, with skills and tools that can be integrated into everyday life. This is an important part of healing the whole person. Services provided by Heart Connection include Kinesiology, Massage and Meditation, that all work together to reduce stress levels. Fellow advocate and husband, Nicholas Zadkiel’s passion for men’s health and wellbeing runs parallel with Geraldine’s. Nicholas runs “Empowering Men" workshops every month in Nelson Bay. Currently training to be a Bowen Therapist, Nicholas believes that it is important for men to know that they are not alone in their day to day struggles and decisions. There is a stigma attached to men asking for help, but Nicholas believes that the current stresses many men face are now causing them to search for alternatives. The month of August saw nine men meet together for the Empowering Men workshop. Nicholas believes that it is time for men to be empowered and to take control of their own health and wellbeing. Reaching for a Panadol every time you have a headache is only a short term fix, but there are other options that men are able to explore through Empowering Men monthly workshops. There has never been a better time for men to be empowered. You can contact Nicholas Zadkiel on 0421 901 202, or through the Empowering Men Facebook for more details on the monthly workshops. Call Geraldine Zadkiel at Heart Connection on 0418 336 482 or through her website at www.heartconnection.com. au for more information on kinesiology, massage and meditation.

Hair&Beauty

Arteke Salon Collective

is more than just a hairdresser.

It’s an experience!

What could be better than stepping out of the salon feeling empowered, confident, fabulous and ready to face the world? Amanda and her team are somewhat of a ‘hair force’ to be reckoned with in the Bay and dub themselves ‘a community of hair and people lovers’. As soon as you walk through the salon door, you are greeted warmly and made to feel like an old friend. It’s not just the warm welcome but also the little touches that make all the difference at this salon. Like the glass of fresh water and Arteke branded chocolate waiting for you at your station, the mints in the bathroom and the overall feeling of being a part of their ‘community’. The service starts with a unique consultation. I’ve been to many hairdressers in the past, but Amanda has an almost sixth sense when it comes to knowing exactly what’s right for you and your hair. There is a big focus not just on style, cut and colour, but on what products are right for you to repair or maintain the condition of your hair. Think of it as a ‘prescription’ for healthy hair! As an added bonus, while I was waiting for my new hair colour to develop, much to the delight of my grumbling tummy, I was offered a lunch menu from a local cafe with a choice of tasty delights. I chose a ham and salad wrap and in less than 10 minutes, it was served to me while I was being pampered in my chair. Talk about wow factor! Not only did I feel very spoiled, but seeing these local businesses support one another was fantastic. Just in case clients don’t already feel special enough, Arteke offer a VIP club where you have access to a closed Facebook group, budgeted hot hair which works in a similar way to a gym membership, discounts, a goodie pack and much more.

BY SAFFRON QUANTRELL AND JEWELL DRURY

After 10 years of serving the local residents of the Bay, Amanda’s ambition is to bring the best the hairdressing industry has, to people in the Port Stephens area.

B E F OR E

She believes that cutting edge technology doesn’t have to be assigned to just the bustling capital cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Her passion and ambition has always been to deliver the same technology to her clients right here in the Bay.

A F T ER

The big news for this “State of the Art” salon is the beginning of a new chapter as Amanda makes plans to expand and move to a brand new salon here in Nelson Bay. Watch this space or keep an eye on Arteke Salon Collective’s Facebook for updates on the big move. Amanda attributes passion and a wonderful team to the success of her salon. Amanda as director, head stylists Deana and Emma, senior stylist Cody and salon assistants Adelaide and Grace all make up the picture of the passionate team that is Arteke Salon Collective. If all you get is a simple haircut and colour when you visit the hairdresser, maybe you are missing out on the wonderful experience that is the Arteke Salon Collective experience. Education: Childcare

PLAY BY JEWELL DRURY

Based Learning at Our Place Preschool We all know the importance of play for a child and yet with all the push today for an earlier start to academics for children, I wonder if we have somehow lost our way in doing what is really best for them. As a mum of eight, I have often wondered how our children’s world would change if we stopped making everything academic and children learned freely, at their own pace, in the simple ways of play that we used to take for granted. Play based learning has recently made a resurgence, and among many is considered the best practice for early childhood, drawing from children’s natural desire to engage in experiences based on their interests, strengths and developing skills. ‘Our Place Preschool’, built on the site of the old Christmas Bush Nursery, Nelson Bay is being run by renowned couple, Jan and Ray Slade. The service has made use of natural materials wherever possible like stone for bench tops and hand washing facilities, natural timber furniture indoors, and natural timber used in the outdoor environment for kitchen, huts and teepees. Sandstone blocks are also a feature in the sandpit. Previous owners and operators of Nelson Bay Preschool, the couple have been involved in the community providing childcare since 2010 and have worked with many children in a variety of settings for the past 27 years. Jan and Ray are passionate

about creating an aesthetic, play based learning environment for pre-schoolers in long day care offering preschool programs which cater for children from three years to school age. “Our Place Preschool is an inclusive service that implements child initiated play based learning to instil a sense of belonging, being, and becoming. Educators and families develop partnerships with each other, and within our community.” Jan said. “Our focus is to provide opportunities for every child to develop at their own individual rate, and to achieve their full potential.” Jan and Ray’s services at the preschool are unique, recognising the importance and the myriad of benefits that play adds to children’s social, cognitive, physical and emotional wellbeing. Jan explained, “Instead of themed worksheets, children will learn through play experiences with a strong focus on the outdoors and nature.” “Children are born to learn and they love to learn. When you take over and try to control their learning, it tends to lose it’s appeal. “Children are constantly learning new things, just because you might not be able to see it or measure it, or it’s not something that’s traditionally academic, doesn’t mean they are not learning. It’s the process not the end product that is significant. “Children who have been given plenty of opportunities for play based learning will have a great start in life. “Amongst other things, they will develop self-confidence, a positive self-image, social and language skills, creativity, curiosity, persistence and concentration.” Jump into a proven and positive way of learning through play at Our Place Preschool, Nelson Bay.
