RESEARCH INTO CURRENT PROJECTS
ALREADY IN PLACE
THE COMMUNITY WEALTH BUILDING PROJECT FOR SOUTH WEST EDINBURGH STARTED BY FOCUSING ON FINDING OUT INFORMATION OF WHICH PROJECTS CURRENTLY EXISTED THAT WERE LINKED TO CWB PRINCIPLES AND/OR HAD THE POTENTIAL TO BE FURTHER INVOLVED WITH THE PROJECT. THE RESEARCH FOUND SOME PHENOMENAL EXAMPLES OF CURRENT ONGOING WORK AND THE LIST BELOW IS BY NO MEANS EXCLUSIVE:

Go Beyond have chosen the two main pillars of focus for the Community Wealth Building Project in South-West Edinburgh, these are:
THESE WERE CHOSEN AFTER THE INITIAL RESEARCH STAGES AS THE 2 PILLARS WHICH SEEMED MOST RELEVANT TO THE LOCAL AREAS THE PROJECT IS WORKING IN. THERE ARE CURRENTLY A LARGE NUMBER OF SMES, LOCAL NETWORKS AND VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS WHO HAVE ONGOING WORK RELEVANT TO THESE AREAS AND/OR FUTURE PLANS FOR PROJECTS IN LINE WITH SUCH.
CLICK HERE FOR BLOG LINK Go Beyond have successfully started a Community Wealth Building BLOG which I updated on a weekly basis. This is a live stream of project updates with some ‘guest appearances’ from various organisations, networks or upcoming relevant project/event information. The reader footfall of this has increased as the project continues to shape and grow and we have added the option to subscribe to the BLOG.
A Community Wealth Building information gathering survey has been made.
CLICK HERE FOR SURVEY LINK This is currently being distributed online, in flyers and also paper copies available to fill out by hand and return. This is available to be translated currently into 10 different languages and is also accessible by QR code. This was to try and support and engage with as many community members as possible. This function appears not to have been used as of yet however I believe it holds value to know and be able to share that it is there. There are currently 42 completed surveys online and between 1015 hand written filled copies. On reflection, the survey is perhaps slightly long for people to complete however the responses so far have prompted lots of ideas and conversations and have already influenced a movement for positive change in one of the areas of Wester Hailes which I’ll go into detail about shortly.
CURRENT SURVEY RESULTS
I have been working closely alongside Claire and Calum from Capital City Partnerships particularly around the launch of the Community Benefits (ESES) Portal – NOW LIVE - which is a huge step for the progression of CWB in the local area. CCP and the new portal cover all of Edinburgh the Lothians and Fife however I have been working closely with Claire to generate excitement and support on this from a South-West perspective. This has generated some pre-arranged “asks” one of which came from WHALE Arts community garden and has acted as a great example of request which fits into the pillar of Socially productive use of land and property.
CLICK HERE FOR ESES PORTAL LINK
FUNDING There have also been multiple discussions around trying to obtain some additional funding to distribute around local SMEs and networks in South-West Edinburgh. We made contact with people connected to the Place Based Investment Fund and the Community Renewal Fund both of whom have allocated all their funding already however have agreed to ongoing communications around these and the potential of future supports in the next financial year.

DUMBEG PARK WESTER HAILES Over the last month, Go Beyond have been in communications with local residents, City of Edinburgh council workers and Prospect Housing staff to hear opinions and suggestions for the Kickabout area in Dumbeg Park which was highlighted through the Community Wealth Building Project as an area which needs attention. As per the responses, it is clear that, from the people who responded to the survey, change is something local residents would be keen to see. The main areas highlighted have been regarding the surrounding woodland area, concerns over not enough bins, lighting and structural damage (including suggestion for resurface) and broken glass. The next steps include further discussions with CEC and Prospect as well as a Community Gathering to consult together and make future, community based and led plans for the area. Date for the event is TBC, watch this space!

A KEY THEME OF FOCUS IN WESTER HAILES IS AROUND GREENSPACE, WHOLEFOODS AND SOCIALLY PRODUCTIVE USE OF LAND AND PROPERTY AND THIS IS EVIDENT IN THE DISCUSSIONS WHICH TAKE PLACE WITHIN THE GROUPS. E.G THERE ARE 3 COMMUNITY GARDENS IN WESTER HAILES AT PRESENT ALL WHICH HAVE KEY ROLES IN THE MASTERPLAN FOR THE TOWN.

THE BROOMHOUSE STREET PARTY EVENT AT THE BEGINNING OF AUTUMN WAS SUCCESSFUL IN BRINGING COMMUNITIES TOGETHER AND SHARING PRACTICE AND IDEAS.
VOLUNTARY SECTOR FORUM THIS GROUP REGULARLY INVITES GUEST SPEAKERS TO DISCUSS UPCOMING OPPORTUNITIES AND FUNDING GRANT AVAILABILITIES AS WELL AS ONGOING CAMPAIGNS AND LOCAL PEOPLE/PLACE SCHEMES. THE GROUP HAS HEARD, FOR EXAMPLE, FROM SIS, SSS AND ESE.

The project has supported various training, consultation and information events throughout the duration. These have included:
‘How to Save a Life’ administration of emergency Naloxone
Trauma-informed practice
Seminars by Culture Collectives and National Care Standards
Conflict management and de-escalation
Events With COVID numbers still high and current restrictions still in place, it has been more difficult to attend in person events than would be hoped for this type of project. The project recognises that there is huge benefit in communicating with people in person and having fluid and open conversations whether this be at planned events or, for example, over a coffee in a community café. This being said, I have managed to attend various events both in person and over Zoom where I have had great opportunities to discuss the project and also collect informed opinions from local residents and workers across the local areas. Some events include:
Westside Plaza Consultation Events
MHD Fun Day
Broomhouse Street Party
NEXT STEPS DEC-MARCH
THE MAIN AIMS FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER OF THE PROJECT ARE FOR ME TO BE INVOLVED IN AS MANY LOCAL GROUP EVENTS AND MEET UPS AND PLACE MYSELF IN LOCAL SPACES AND PLACES TO ALLOW PEOPLE IN COMMUNITIES TO REALLY UNDERSTAND THE PROJECT AND ALLOW THEIR VOICES TO BE HEARD.
THE GRASSROOTS APPROACH TO THIS PROJECT IS ONE WHICH HAS SO MUCH POTENTIAL AND AUTHENTICITY AND WE ALREADY RECOGNISE AND NOTICE THAT PEOPLE DO HAVE RESERVATIONS ABOUT WHOLLY INVOLVING THEMSELVES WITH PROJECTS AS SUCH.
THE FEEDBACK AROUND THIS IS MAINLY THAT PEOPLE FEEL THEY HAVE BEEN LET DOWN BY PROJECTS, ORGANISATIONS AND NETWORKS IN THE PAST AND THEREFORE HOLD A RELUCTANCY TO TRUST IN SOME RESPECTS.
THIS PROJECT AIMS TO WORK CLOSELY WITH LOCAL PEOPLE TO HELP BREAK DOWN THESE BARRIERS AND REPAIR RELATIONSHIPS AND UPHOLD PUBLIC TRUST.
ons i t a c i n Commu
I HAVE TAKEN ON AN EXTRA 4 HOURS OF WORK PER WEEK TAKING OVER THE COMMUNICATIONS ROLE FOR GO BEYOND TO SUPPORT WEBSITE UPDATES, SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT AND MONTHLY NEWSLETTER.
THIS BEGUN IN NOVEMBER UNTIL MARCH AS A TRIAL POST FUNDED BY WHALE ARTS, BIG HEARTS COMMUNITY TRUST AND SPACE BROOMHOUSE HUB. IT IS RECOGNISED THAT THIS POST AND POSITION SHOULD BEING HUGE BENEFIT AND CREDIBILITY TO THE PROJECT AND THE TEAM LOOK FORWARD TO SUPPORTING THIS.

Taken from the Go Beyond MOU
"AS PART OF THIS PROJECT £750 HAS BEEN INCLUDED FOR EACH SMALL AREA NETWORK...
TO BE USED BY THE NETWORKS/CHAIRS FOR THEM TO PARTICIPATE FULLY IN THE PROJECT OR TO BE SPENT IN THEIR LOCAL AREA."
Within the CWB project budget, an allocation of funding has been given to all 6 local area networks involved. This is £750 each to be spent accordingly in line with CWB pillars and funding outcomes.
In all the recent forum meetings, I have mentioned the funding and asked partners to consider how they might like to use this money.
Prior to the festive break, I am arranging 1:1 meetings with all chairs to discuss this further and begin to make plans to utilise this resource creatively, effectively and collaboratively.
FINAL NOTE
CONCLUSION
TO CONCLUDE, THE PROJECT HAS BEEN WORKING EFFICIENTLY AND SUCCESSFULLY THUS FAR IN ENGAGING THE COMMUNITY. SMES AND CHARITY SECTOR AS WELL AS PUBLIC, HEALTH AND PRIVATE SECTOR PARTNERS.
IT IS RECOGNISED THAT THIS PROJECT HAS A LOT OF SCOPE AND HAS THE POTENTIAL TO DEVELOP A GENERATIVE, SUSTAINABLE AND MORE ROOTED ECONOMY WITHIN LOCAL PLACES IN SOUTH-WEST EDINBURGH.
