WGBH was born in 1951 with a live radio broadcast from Boston’s Symphony Hall. And we’ve been offering a front-row seat to the best the arts have to offer ever since. It’s only fitting that this month we return to the venerable Huntington Avenue stage with a new special showcasing trumpet superstar Chris Botti and a roster of A-list artists, Yo-Yo Ma to Sting. Chris is a great friend of WGBH and public media and, as you know well, a frequent guest in our studios; the Grammy winner will join us again on Monday, March 2 when Chris Botti in Boston airs (see page 7). Music, drama, dance, literature, film. The arts captivate and inspire us. They strengthen our connections with others. They help us, individually and collectively, ponder what might be possible. WGBH offers free admission to the arts on air and online 365 days a year—with lots to choose from this month, as you’ll see in these pages: Little Dorrit on Masterpiece Classic’s The Tales of Charles Dickens, Sir Ian McKellen’s star turn as Shakespeare’s King Lear, a live performance by the Boston Chamber Music Society from our Fraser Performance Studio. And that’s just for starters. Using media to promote the arts and build audiences for the wealth of creativity beyond our Brighton doors is a WGBH cornerstone. In that spirit, we are proud to partner with ArtsBoston—another local organization committed to making the arts accessible to diverse audiences—on the launch of a new website designed to support and promote the arts in and around the region.
