On February 17, 2009, WGBH along with every TV station in the country, is “going digital.” Are you ready? If not, you need to take action today. Why? Because if you watch TV through a rooftop antenna or “rabbit ears,” and you have an older TV set, unless you have taken steps to be ready to receive digital television you will stop receiving free, over-the-air TV on that date. The federally mandated switchover ensures better picture and sound quality; it also frees up space on the TV spectrum for more programs, as well as provides frequencies for police, fire, and emergency rescue communications. If you already subscribe to cable or satellite (and every TV set in your home or office is hooked up to this service), you needn’t worry about the change. But if you don’t have either of these services, you need to act immediately. And WGBH is here with information to help get you ready. “There’s a lot of confusion across the country about the digital switchover,” says Chris Clark, who heads up the WGBH Member and Viewer Services group overseeing our DTV switchover education efforts. “The first step for everyone is to visit wgbh.org/digitaltvswitchover, where we’ve posted straightforward updates and online links to help you prepare for the transition—and to ensure that you don’t miss out on your favorite programs.” Don’t let your TV go blank. Don’t wait until February. Go to wgbh.org/digitaltvswitchover, and go digital today!

Sins of the Father Imagine watching Schindler’s List and knowing the sadistic Nazi camp commandant played by Ralph Fiennes was your father. Monika Hertwig, the daughter of mass murderer Amon Goeth, has spent her life in the shadow of her father’s sins. She seeks out Helen Jonas-Rosenzweig, who was enslaved by Goeth and who is one of the few living eyewitnesses to his unspeakable brutality. The women’s raw, emotional meeting unearths terrible truths and lingering questions about how the actions of parents can continue to ripple through generations. Going Her Way Cindy Blackman is regarded as one of the top drummers in the world. She may be known best for her strong presence in the video for Lenny Kravitz’s 1993 hit, “Are You Gonna Go My Way,” however, her career is deep and varied, including stints with Iggy Pop, Prince and Mick Jagger. Her impressive work in pop and rock music aside, Blackman counts jazz as her foremost love. Host Kim McLarin sits down with Blackman to discuss her life in music. Basic Black A Conversation with Jazz and Rock Drummer Cindy Blackman Premieres Thu, 12/18 at 7:30pm on 2 Funding for Basic Black is generously provided, in part, by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Seeds of Contemplation This new film examines the life of Thomas Merton (shown with the Dalai Lama), the acclaimed monk and writer considered one of the most influential spiritual voices of the 20th century. Born to American artists in 1915 in southern France, Merton grew up embracing bohemian, intellectual pursuits that led him to embrace communism. Eventually, he turned to Catholicism and a strictly cloistered life in a rural Kentucky monastery. His writings over the next 27 years, examining spirituality, secured his literary reputation. Woody In his 1977 classic, Woody Allen plays neurotic comedian Alvy Singer, taking a stream-ofconsciousness journey through memories of a recently ended relationship with Annie Hall (Diane Keaton). Gags, such as his father operating a bumper car concession during his childhood and the family home being located below the Thunderbolt roller coaster on Coney Island, intermingle with more serious ruminations on love and relationships. Allen’s witty and incisive autobiographical love story won Oscars for Best Picture, Actress (Keaton), Director and Screenplay.
