Frontline Turns Up the Heat “Climate change is the defining story of our times,” says Martin Smith. And he should know. An award-winning documentary producer and prolific Frontline correspondent, Marty (below, standing, on location) has reported on the Cold War, the breakup of the Soviet Union, the rise of Al Qaeda, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. For this month’s Heat (premiering Tuesday, 10/21 at 9pm on WGBH 2), Marty traveled the globe to investigate how the world’s largest corporations and governments are responding to the Earth’s looming environmental disaster (see page 12). His Frontline journey took him from coal mines in Appalachia to the corridors of power in Washington, from droughtstricken villages in Africa to the melting glaciers of Mt. Everest. Along the way, Marty got a close-up look at the impact of climate change on some of the planet’s most sensitive ecological systems, and at innovative ideas for reducing carbon emissions. “It’s a complicated story,” Marty says, “but Frontline gave me the time, and support, to get it right.” Heat is the latest installment in Frontline’s remarkable 25-plus year roster of outstanding investigative reports, for which the WGBH-produced series took home a special News and Documentary Emmy last fall, joining its unprecedented three duPont-Columbia Gold Batons.“We tackle ambitious topics and ask tough questions,” says Frontline Executive Producer David Fanning.“It’s what distinguishes us from our commercial and cable counterparts. It’s why we’re here.” As with all Frontline projects—including The Choice 2008, Frontline’s quadrennial dual bio of the two major party presidential candidates (see page 11)—Heat begins a public conversation that continues online at wgbh.org/ frontline. Our new-media efforts enable Heat was made possible by generous a growing audience the opportunity to contributions to WGBH’s new Frontline watch more than 70 Frontline films in their Journalism Fund. Power Politics Examining the 2008 election through the prism of ethnic politics, this new documentary looks at how candidates and advocacy groups are trying to mobilize and attract an unpredictable group of voters. Latinos are less cohesive than other voting blocs, and they do not fit the black/ white racial binary that has long shaped American politics. The film asks: Will the Latino electorate coalesce nonetheless, united around the immigration issue and hemispheric foreign policy considerations? Or will ethnic considerations be trumped by class, education and other factors? Latinos ’08 Premieres Wed, 10/8 at 9pm on 2

Frontline producer Martin Smith (Return of the Taliban) travels the globe, sizing up the climate problem firsthand, and examines what big business is really doing to address the issues. “ The Ralph Lowell Society offers a great way to match passion with philanthropy.”

Tedd Saunders President, EcoLogical Solutions Inc. Member, WGBH Ralph Lowell Society

Passions? In addition to my family and friends, my raison d’être for the past 18 years has been to create sustainable business models in the travel and tourism industry.

WGBH favorites? On TV, Frontline (I’m looking forward to Heat this month), Nova, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, Simply Ming. On WGBH Radio, Weekend Edition, Blues on WGBH, A Prairie Home Companion.

You’ve pioneered green practices in the business community through your family’s company, The Saunders Hotel Group. Why? Seeing the benefits of “greening” our family’s Lenox Hotel has allowed me to demonstrate, on a larger scale, how companies can “do well by doing good.”

Why support WGBH through an annual gift to the Ralph Lowell Society? WGBH needs and deserves significant support from everyone, citizens and businesspeople, whose lives it enriches. The Ralph Lowell Society offers a great way to match passion with philanthropy.

Ralph Lowell Society members share the distinction of being WGBH’s most generous annual contributors—a diverse group of philanthropic individuals and families committed to helping WGBH make a difference via public television, on the radio, the Web, and in the community.

If you’d like to learn more about end-of-year giving options, or how an annual gift to the Ralph Lowell Society helps WGBH move forward with its mission to serve the public interest, call 617.300.3900 or email ralph_lowell_society@wgbh.org.

Are you ready? 2/17/2009 DIGITAL TV DEADLINE Starting February 17, 2009, federal law requires that all TV stations broadcast only a digital signal. If you use an antenna or rabbit ears to tune in 2 or 44, you’ll need a converter box or a new TV to continue to receive television over the air. To offset the cost of converter boxes, the government is offering consumers two $40 coupons per household. Don’t wait!

WGBH is here to help! For more information, go to wgbh.org/digitaltvswitchover or call 617-300-3300
