As we enter the home stretch in this historic presidential campaign, WGBH has got you covered—on the air, on the Web, and even on iTunes. If you missed The Choice 2008 on Frontline last month, you still can watch this dual biography of the two major party candidates online anytime (wgbh.org/frontline/choice2008), or in an encore election eve broadcast at 9pm on WGBH 2. At this decisive political moment, WGBH is extending the seminal Frontline film’s reach even further—to YouTube, where the documentary is available in its entirety, and as a free download on iTunes. Promoting good citizenship starts early on election morning as WGBH takes children to the polls with episodes of Arthur, Cyberchase, and WordGirl—each themed around elections, voting, and making a difference. On radio, WGBH’s The World (online at theworld.org) brings international perspective to what’s at stake for countries most affected by US election results. And the thoughtful news and commentary is ongoing with NPR’s Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Weekend Edition. Then, as the votes are tallied on the first Tuesday evening in November, we’ll be there with expert analysis from Jim Lehrer and a team of veteran journalists on Election Night 2008: A NewsHour Special Report (see page 8). Thank you for your vote of confidence in helping WGBH and public broadcasting maintain a home for independent journalism, never more critical than now. We couldn’t do it without you.

The Bible’s Buried Secrets A scientific journey into the Holy Land, this WGBH-produced two-hour Nova special presents the results of more than 100 years of excavation and centuries of biblical scholarship, digging deep into the origins of the Hebrew Bible, or Old Testament. This archaeological detective story tackles some of the biggest questions in biblical studies: Where did the ancient Israelites come from? Who wrote the Bible, when and why? How did the worship of one god, the foundation of modern Judaism, Christianity and Islam, emerge? For more, go to wgbh.org/nova; and for related lectures, visit the WGBH Forum Network at wgbh.org/forum. Cooke’s Tour This new WGBH-produced film marks the November centenary of the birth of longtime Masterpiece Theatre host Alistair Cooke. Told in his own voice and through interviews with family and close friends, including Masterpiece executive producer Rebecca Eaton, this film is a chance to see America as Cooke first saw it: as raw material for a lifetime of journalism. Telling Their Story This documentary follows three teens from the Swinomish Tribe in Washington state who have been asked to make a film about the threat their people face from local oil refineries. Ambivalent environmental ambassadors at the onset, the boys grapple with their assignment through humor, sarcasm and a candid self-knowledge. But as their filmmaking evolves, they experience the need to understand and tell their story. This film is airing in celebration of Native American Heritage Month. Music Director Laureate Seiji Ozawa returns to lead the BSO at Symphony Hall for the first time since April 2002. It’s an all-French program, with music by two composers for whom Ozawa has great affinity. Olivier Messiaen’s Trois Petites Liturgies features women’s chorus, piano and the otherworldly sound of the ondes Martenot. And Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique tells the romantic story of an artist’s unrequited love. BSO Live Fri, 11/28 at 1pm

“ I think it’s important to support WGBH Radio and public broadcasting, and a Life Income Gift is a great way to do it!” Robert Sparks Westboro, MA Retired engineer

Passions: Nature, music, museums, swimming, hiking, outdoor activities.

WGBH favorites: All of the classical programs on 89.7, All Things Considered, Marketplace Morning Report, Says You!, Jazz Decades, A Prairie Home Companion.

Why make a Life Income Gift to WGBH? I just appreciate the music on 89.7 that I can’t get anywhere else. I think it’s important to support WGBH Radio and public broadcasting, and a Life Income Gift is a great way to do it!

Current Gift Annuity Rates Effective July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009 Age Rate 60 5.5% 65 5.7% 70 6.1% 75 6.7% 80 7.6% 85 8.9% 90 10.5%

A wonderful source of permanent support for WGBH’s future endeavors, a charitable gift annuity also can be a way for you to overcome low interest rates and an unstable financial market. In exchange for your gift of $10,000 or more, you and/or another named beneficiary will receive dependable fixed payments for life, a portion of which are tax-free, and a charitable deduction in the year you make your gift. The gift annuity rate, set at the time you make your gift, is based on your age and is guaranteed not to change for your lifetime. Our staff will be happy to answer any questions you may have about planned giving options. To learn more, please contact Pamela Moodie, Director of Planned Giving and Endowment, at 617.300.3860 or pamela_moodie@wgbh.org. Your inquiry will be confidential and places you under no obligation.
