He’s brought us some of the most memorable films in PBs history: The Civil War, Jazz, Baseball. He’s also regularly turned his lens on the smaller, yet important stories that help us expand and redefine our understanding of who we are as Americans—from The Shakers to Huey Long. this month, filmmaker extraordinaire Ken Burns and co-producer Lynn Novick have teamed up to bring us Prohibition a new three-part series that explores the rise, rule and fall of the 18th Amendment (see page 8). “Prohibition is a story of single-issue political campaigns that metastasize with horrible, unintended consequences,” Ken says. the film raises vital questions that are as relevant today as they were 100 years ago: about means and ends, individual rights and responsibilities and the proper role of government.” Longtime friends and supporters of WGBH, Ken and Lynn visited our studios last month to talk about the film and Ken’s partnership with PBs and the national Constitution Center to foster a national conversation about civility and democracy. “there have been many other times in our history when civility failed, and there were consequences—the Civil War being the most powerful example,” Ken says. “Prohibition is a less pernicious example, but it’s an important one nevertheless. the failure of people to talk with each other and the absolutism of the various sides contributed to the problem.” Carving out a place for civil discourse, pushing past the myths to explore the important, often untold stories and helping us connect the dots between our past and present are part of WGBH and public broadcasting’s core mission. so, too, is providing a showcase for some of the best documentary films in the world today. For more thought-provoking conversation with Ken, check out our exclusive interview with him on page 23, and then tune in Prohibition. Original research. Fresh perspectives. Powerful stories. All made possible by your generous annual support.

Advocates of the US Constitution’s 18th Amendment that banned the manufacture, sale or transportation of “intoxicating liquors” had high hopes that ridding the nation of alcohol would improve society’s ills. But after 13 years, America’s “Great Experiment” failed. Filmmaker Ken Burns joins with co-producer Lynn Novick to reveal the story behind Prohibition, going far beyond the oft-told tales of gangsters, rum runners, flappers and speakeasies to reveal a complicated and divided nation in the throes of momentous transformation. The series’ first installment, A Nation of Drunkards, traces alcohol’s integration into the fabric of American culture. A Nation of Scofflaws examines the problems of enforcing the 18th Amendment. In the final episode, A Nation of Hypocrites, Prohibition’s high social cost begins to override its promise, and efforts to repeal the amendment ensue. Read more about the making of Prohibition in an exclusive interview with Ken Burns on page 23. Prohibition Sun, Mon & Tue, 10/2, 10/3 & 10/4 at 8pm on WGBH 2

Women’s World?

A new three-part series on the role of women in war and peace challenges the conventional wisdom that those terrains are men’s domain. Women, War & Peace reveals how the post-Cold War proliferation of small arms has changed the landscape of war, creating a time when women are both suffering unparalleled casualties while simultaneously emerging as necessary partners in brokering lasting peace. Follow stories in conflict zones from Bosnia to Afghanistan and Colombia to Liberia, where women are found at the center of an urgent dialogue about conflict and security. in the fall of 2001, envelopes carrying deadly anthrax were delivered to Us senate offices, network news divisions and a tabloid newspaper. Five people were killed and the nation was terrorized. seven years later, the most complex investigation ever undertaken by the FBi ended when the agency identified Army scientist dr. Bruce ivins as the sole perpetrator of the attacks—after ivins had taken his own life. now, new questions are being raised about the FBi’s investigative methods and whether ivins really was behind the attacks. WGBH’s Frontline, in a co-production with ProPublica and mcClatchy newspapers, takes a hard look at the FBi’s investigation of the country’s most notorious act of bioterrorism. scientists are on the verge of answering one of the greatest questions in history: Are we alone? Combining the latest telescope images with dazzling computer graphics, WGBH’s Nova brings audiences to the sights and sounds of alien worlds, while top astrobiologists explain how these places are changing how we think about the potential for life in our solar system. Powerful telescopes and unmanned space missions have revealed a wide range of dynamic environments—atmospheres thick with organic molecules, active volcanoes and vast saltwater oceans—forcing scientists to expand their ideas about what kinds of worlds could support life. Radio Spotlight A Conversation with Ken Burns For 35 years, documentary filmmaker Ken Burns has been an illuminating voice in our national conversation—on topics ranging from the Civil War to the Statue of Liberty to America’s national pastime. This month, Burns and co-producer Lynn Novick bring their signature substance and style to a painful and little-understood chapter in American history, detailing the rise, rule and fall of the 18th Amendment in Prohibition. Their threepart PBS series will be featured in an outreach partnership with the National Constitution Center to foster a national conversation about civility and democracy. WGBH’s Tina Vaz recently caught up with Burns to talk about Prohibition, public radio and the state of our public discourse.

Q A

What drew you to the subject of Prohibition? We’re always looking for good stories to tell, and Prohibition engages so many interesting aspects. It’s a story of single-issue political campaigns that metastasize with horrible, unintended consequences. Of smear campaigns against presidential politicians. Of unfunded Congressional mandates and the demonization of recent immigrants to the US. It’s about a group of people who felt they’d lost control of their country and wanted to take it back. And, of course, it’s about a colossal civic failure that resulted in the only repeal of a Constitutional amendment.

Q A

You’ve said that each of your films asks: Who are we? What does Prohibition tell you about who we are as Americans? Like all of our films, Prohibition doesn’t fully answer the question of who we are, but it deepens our understanding. Prohibition—if it’s taught at all—rarely gets past the familiar images of flappers, gangsters and gin joints. This film offers a closer look at how America’s “Great Experiment” was intricately intertwined with social factors such as women’s suffrage, Emancipation, industrialization and immigration.

Q A

Why did you get involved with the “Civility and Democracy” project? Like most Americans, Lynn and I are shocked at the way in which our political dialogue has degenerated in recent years. There have been many other times in our history when civility failed, and there were consequences—the Civil War being the most powerful example. Prohibition is a less pernicious example, but it’s an important one nevertheless. The failure of people to talk with

trumpet players and jazz composers on the planet today. He is the greatest teacher of jazz, this extraordinary American art form that has become a worldwide phenomenon. And he’s a very smart guy who continually surprises me with the depth and profundity of his thought. We’ve been friends for nearly 20 years, and I couldn’t imagine leaving home without him on a project like Prohibition.

Q A

Q A

You’ve said that you’re in the “memory business.” How is our national memory faring in the age of Twitter? We have presidential candidates who don’t know the correct state in which the first battle of the American Revolution took place, and who can’t distinguish our Founding Fathers from our Founding Sons. A recent study showed that only 9 percent of fourth graders could identify a photograph of Abraham Lincoln. That’s terrifying. What we’re trying to do in public media is to be a bulwark against the chaos and entropy that such a lack of knowledge fosters.

Q A

You’re a longtime friend of WGBH. What do you think WGBH adds to the media landscape? Public media produces the best children’s, science, nature, drama, public affairs and, I’m told, history programming out there today. WGBH is the big muscle car coming down the street. It has had an enormous influence on the history of public media and continues to set the gold standard.

each other and the absolutism of the various sides contributed to the problem. The film seemed a logical place to go public with a discussion of civility and democracy in our political discourse. What role does public radio play in advancing civility and democracy? Public radio has long been a beacon of reasoned discourse in an otherwise relatively cacophonous world. That’s one of the reasons it’s still so influential despite the primacy of television and other visual media. Public radio consistently delivers news in a completely nonpartisan way and provides an intelligent and in-depth look at the issues. That alone earns it my utmost respect. What are some of your public radio favorites? Morning Edition and All Things Considered are the two best programs on radio, followed closely by Weekend Edition. Once you start there, everything else is gravy, from A Prairie Home Companion to Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! to the myriad local programs, many produced by WGBH, that I listen to all the time.

Q

Prohibition continues your longtime collaboration with jazz musician Wynton Marsalis. Why is music important to your storytelling, and what does Marsalis bring to this project? Music is important because it delivers com plex thoughts and emotions in an immediate and extraordinarily precise way. It’s a major element of filmmaking and too often added at the end rather than being an organic part. We record our music early in our editing process—sometimes even before editing begins—so that the music can inform it. We don’t have enough time to talk about Wynton Marsalis’s genius! He’s one of the greatest

A

Q A Q A

What’s next for you?

We just finished editing a film on the history of the Dust Bowl, which will be out in 2012. We’re beginning editing of a film on the Central Park jogger case, focusing on the five black and Hispanic boys who went to jail for a crime they didn’t commit. We’re about halfway through editing a first-ever series on Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. And we’re beginning a biography of Jackie Robinson and a major history of the Vietnam War.

Q A

Any predictions for the Red Sox?

We’re going to win the World Series. I say it every spring!

Sam’s Story

In a Hispanic Heritage Month special, Arts & Ideas tells the story of a talented young jazz musician named Sam, brought to the US at age 5 by his Mexican parents. He stays out of trouble, falls in love with playing jazz on the tenor sax and gets his diploma with honors—only to discover that for an “illegal,” graduation marks a dead end. Though Sam dreams of attending college to study jazz, he hides his status from even his closest friends, and can’t legally work, drive, get financial aid or even gain admission to some colleges. Arts & Ideas follows him from his high school graduation through the following summer, as he struggles to raise money to continue his education and weighs the risks of working and driving illegally against his own desire to achieve his American dream. All Classical WGBH and the BSO: 60 Years of Making Music Together “The field is wide open, and I can’t think of an area better equipped than Boston to the carrying out of an adventurous project of this kind.” – Aaron Copland, WGBH Radio, October 6, 1951 By Ben Roe WGBH Managing Director of Classical Services

A mere three days after the late broadcaster Russ (“The Giants win the pennant!”) Hodges uttered one of the most famous lines in radio history, Aaron Copland made a pretty audacious “call” of his own. The American composer was part of what truly was WGBH’s “Opening Day:” October 6, 1951, when WGBH Radio signed on the air with a live broadcast of the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s first program of the season. Thus was born one of the nation’s pioneering public-media organizations, thanks to strong community support and the persistence of a group of Boston’s educational and cultural leaders, led by the extraordinary vision and indefatigable spirit of Ralph Lowell. Lowell, who led the founding of WGBH, himself uttered the first words listeners heard on this fledgling station: “WGBH is truly the outgrowth of a community effort…nationwide, in fact. Finally, those who have listened to our programs in the past, and encouraged us to go forward, are responsible for WGBH. WGBH, we hope, will be a station which you will invite into your home as a welcome guest. We plan to be on the air every day, from 3 o’clock until 10; a carrier of the cultural heritage of the world in which our own New England shares so abundantly.” Sixty years on, the “adventurous project” by, in Copland’s words, the “bright new hope of radio stations” has flowered into one of the world’s most-recognized public media providers. WGBH is stronger than it ever has been before, working tirelessly to fulfill Lowell’s vision of public broadcasting: bringing you thoughtful and inspiring programming—everything from the in-depth news on 89.7 WGBH, to programs that celebrate creativity and the human spirit, on the radio, on television and online.

Through all of the changes that have transformed Boston, the media landscape and the world, there has been one constant on the radio: live concert broadcasts of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, creating the longest continuous relationship between an orchestra and a broadcaster in the nation. Now, we’re thrilled to announce that the partnership between WGBH and the BSO is about to get even stronger, with more opportunities than ever before to hear the Boston Symphony, the Boston Pops and Tanglewood concerts on the radio, online and all over New England. Beginning this month, 99.5, Boston’s All Classical station, will be airing Boston Symphony Orchestra concerts live on Saturday nights, and repeating the program on Sunday afternoons. Each broadcast will be available for on-demand listening via the new BSO Tanglewood Channel from WGBH at bsotanglewood.org. In addition, our broadcast concerts from both Symphony Hall and Tanglewood will be available for the first time ever to stations throughout the six-state New England region. To celebrate this new level of partnership, join us for a special broadcast on Thursday night, October 6, for a 60th-anniversary commemorative concert from Symphony Hall. At 7pm, 99.5 presents a documentary on our 60 years of BSO broadcasts that will include excerpts from the inaugural BSO broadcast. Then, live at 8pm, Assistant Conductor Sean Newhouse leads the BSO in the Four Sea Interludes from Benjamin Britten’s opera Peter Grimes, the Symphony No. 2 by Jean Sibelius and the Piano Concerto No. 3 by Sergei Prokofiev, with French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet as the soloist. Ron Della Chiesa will be back in the host’s chair, with the support of WGBH producer Brian Bell and an engineering crew led by Jim Donahue.

WCAI, WGBH’s public radio station serving Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, is renovating its dilapidated but historic home: the 1840s “Captain Davis” house at 3 Water Street in Woods Hole, across from the Steamship Authority. Built in 1845 for Civil War veteran Captain Thomas G. Davis, the Greek Revival is undergoing historically accurate restoration or repair of windows, siding and roof and an addition of a front deck that has been absent for decades. Funded by the Falmouth Community Preservation Committee and the generous support of donors, work is slated to be finished by next year. The station still needs to raise $100,000 to complete the renovation. Visit wgbh.org/wcai/buildingfund to contribute or learn more.
