He’s brought us some of the most memorable films in PBS history: The Civil War, Jazz, Baseball and Prohibition. This month, Ken Burns and longtime collaborator Dayton Duncan have teamed up to bring us The Dust Bowl (see page 13), a two-part documentary chronicling the worst man-made environmental catastrophe in American history. It destroyed the farmlands of the Great Plains, turned prairies into deserts, and unleashed a pattern of massive, deadly dust storms that for many seemed to herald the end of the world. Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl was a heartbreaking tragedy for millions of Americans. “But perhaps the biggest tragedy,” says Ken, “is that it was preventable. This was an ecosystem— a grassland—that had evolved over millions of years to adjust to the droughts, high winds and violent weather extremes so common to that part of the country.” But in the early 20th century, a combination of factors—a stretch of unusually wet weather, a spike in wheat prices and advances in agricultural equipment—spurred a farming boom that uprooted millions of acres of grassland. “When the drought returned, all that exposed soil took to the skies.” The Dust Bowl is Ken Burns at his best: chronicling a critical moment in American history in all its complexities and profound drama—including rare interviews with 26 survivors of those hard times—while raising crucial questions about humans’ impact on the environment that are more relevant than ever. “It was as if nature itself had turned against the farmers,” says Dayton. “But in fact it was the other way around: we had tried to impose our will on nature and the results were catastrophic.” The film is accompanied by an in-depth website (pbs.org/dustbowl) that offers interview transcripts, archival footage, photographs and music as well as educational outreach materials and lesson plans that will enable teachers to use The Dust Bowl as a historical lens to explore changes affecting the environment today. William Faulkner once said, “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” Thanks to your generous annual support, WGBH is the place for original, in-depth history documentaries that help us all connect the dots.

A series of bold and provocative films tackles some of the issues surrounding this question, including food security, education, gender equality, the effectiveness of global aid, the effects of disease, and wars. Solar Mamas explores India’s Barefoot College, which gives impoverished women skills to change their communities. On US shores, Park Avenue: Money, Power & the American Dream tells the story of the economic disparities faced by New Yorkers only minutes from one another as the crow flies. Poor Kids USA, produced by WGBH’s Frontline, looks at the world from the point of view of a handful of emotionally intelligent and articulate children, exploring what life is like for some of the youngest victims of the economic decline. And Give Us the Money delves into the age-old question of how to do good by examining the successes and setbacks of end-poverty global campaigns. WGBH’s World channel will present two films on poverty each night the week of November 26, airing from 7 to 9pm (see page 7 for program titles and page 1 for ways to tune in World). A remote, bleak speck of rock in the middle of the Pacific, Easter Island has mystified the world ever since the first Europeans arrived in 1722. How and why did the ancient islanders build and move nearly 900 giant statues, or moai, weighing up to 86 tons? And how did they transform a presumed paradise into a treeless wasteland, bringing ruin upon their island and themselves? Nova explores controversial recent claims that challenge decades of previous thinking about the islanders, who have been accused of everything from ecocide to cannibalism. Among the radical new theories is that the islanders used ropes to “walk” the statues upright, like moving a refrigerator. With the help of an accurate 15-ton replica statue, a Nova team sets out to test this high-risk, seemingly unlikely theory—serving up plenty of action and surprises in this fresh investigation of one of the ancient world’s most intriguing enigmas. Despite the odds, there are countless stories of the most unlikely cross-species relationships imaginable: a goat guiding a blind horse, a doe who regularly visits her Great Dane surrogate mother, a juvenile gibbon choosing to live with a family of capuchins. Aberrations of nature? Instincts gone awry? Animal Odd Couples looks at these remarkable relationships firsthand, and through caregivers, biologists and animal behaviorists, explores what they suggest about the nature of animal emotions. Exploring Assisted Suicide

No decision is more personal than the choice to end one’s life. For those with fatal and incurable diseases, seeking help to hasten death means navigating ethical questions as well as legal risks for those left behind. Doctor-assisted suicide is currently legal in two states: Washington and Oregon. Across the country, the boundaries of what is culturally acceptable are broadening, and the lines between what is legal and illegal, merciful and cruel, and what seems right and wrong are blurred as never before. In stunning portraits of individuals grappling with the end of life—along with the doctors, family members, activists and legal experts with stakes in their decisions—WGBH’s Frontline explores America’s ambivalence about assisted suicide. A Duck’s Life

Ducks fly through the air on short stubby wings—traveling in large, energy-efficient formations over thousands of miles. There are some 150 species of them, representing a wide variety of shapes, sizes and behaviors. Some are noisy and gregarious, others shy and elusive. They are familiar animals, but most of us don’t really know these phenomenal, sophisticated creatures at all. An Original DUCKumentary follows a wood duck family as a male and female create a bond, migrate together across thousands of miles, nurture and protect a brood of chicks, then come full circle as they head to their wintering grounds. In August, a rover named Curiosity touched down inside Mars’s Gale Crater, carrying instruments designed to test for signs that Mars might once have been suitable for life. But landing on the Red Planet was no small task. While the “sky crane” that lowered the rover to the planet’s surface was rigorously tested on Earth, there was no guarantee it would work on Mars. With inside access to the scientists and engineers responsible for Curiosity’s on-the-ground experiments, WGBH’s Nova brings you the exhilarating moments after Curiosity’s landing—and the spectacular discoveries that followed. The Dust Bowl

Ken Burns’s latest film chronicles the worst man-made ecological disaster in American history, in which the frenzied wheat boom of the “Great Plow-Up,” followed by a decade-long drought during the 1930s, destroyed the farmlands of the Great Plains, turned prairies into deserts and unleashed a pattern of deadly dust storms. Each year of the calamity, storms grew more ferocious and more frequent, sweeping up millions of tons of earth, covering farms and homes across the Plains with sand and spreading the dust across the country. Children developed often-fatal “dust pneumonia,” business owners unable to cope with the financial ruin committed suicide, and thousands of desperate Americans were torn from their homes and forced on the road in an exodus unlike anything the US had ever seen. But with tragedy also came heroic perseverance against enormous odds: families finding ways to survive and hold onto their land, New Deal programs that kept hungry families afloat, and a partnership between government agencies and farmers to develop new farming and conservation methods. The Dust Bowl tells this story through vivid interviews with 26 survivors of those hard times— perhaps the last recorded testimony of the generation that lived through the disaster. Seldom-seen movie footage and previously unpublished photographs bring to life the stories of incredible human suffering and equally incredible human resilience that mark this epic period in America’s history. Whether you’re brining the turkey, slicing the ham, preparing a vegetarian feast or doing something else to get ready for Thanksgiving, tune in these programs to learn facts about turkey life and the science of taste. You’ll be the hit of the dinner party!

Nature/My Life As a Turkey Based on the true story of writer and naturalist Joe Hutto, portrayed by wildlife photographer Jeff Palmer, this film chronicles Hutto’s remarkable experience of imprinting wild turkey eggs and raising the hatchlings to adulthood. Deep in the wilds of Florida, Hutto spent each day out and about as a “wild turkey” with his family of chicks—until the day came when he had to let his turkey kids grow up and go off on their own. As it turned out, this was harder than he ever imagined. Hutto’s story also became a book, Illumination in the Flatlands. Wed, 11/21 at 8pm on WGBH 2

Nova ScienceNow/Can I Eat That?

What are the secrets behind your favorite foods? Why are some treats—like chocolate chip cookies—delectable, while others—like cookies made with mealworms—disgusting? You may think you understand what makes something sweet, salty or bitter, but Nova ScienceNow host David Pogue gets a taste of a much more complicated truth as he ventures into labs and kitchens where everything from apple pie to Thanksgiving turkey to juicy grasshoppers is diced, sliced, dissected and put under the microscope. If scientists can uncover exactly what’s behind the mouth-watering flavors and textures we take for granted every day, could they help us enjoy our food more— without packing on the pounds? Notoriously press- and camera-shy, David Geffen reveals himself for the first time in this unflinching portrait of a complex and compelling man. His far-reaching influence—as an agent and manager, record industry mogul, Hollywood and Broadway producer and billionaire philanthropist—has helped shape American popular culture for the past four decades. Geffen and others—including Yoko Ono, Cher, Maureen Dowd, Stephen Spielberg, David Crosby and Elton John—illuminate his riveting story. David Geffen: American Masters Tue, 11/20 at 8pm on WGBH 2

Radio Spotlight Celebrating 10 years of A Christmas Celtic Sojourn 89.7 WGBH’s Brian O’Donovan has created a local holiday tradition. Now in its 10th year, A Christmas Celtic Sojourn plays to sold-out theaters in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. More than 10,000 people in all will turn out next month to enjoy the seasonal mix of traditional Celtic music, Irish dancing and storytelling hosted by O’Donovan. WGBH’s Matt Roy recently spoke with him about the anniversary and what audiences can expect to see and hear this year.

Q A

How was A Christmas Celtic Sojourn born? It was an extension of the annual Christmas edition of my radio show, A Celtic Sojourn. I always liked the idea of “collage” radio, and the Christmas show was a blend of music, spoken-word poetry and storytelling. And instead of a host in the traditional sense, I became a dramatic character who tied together this pastiche for listeners. In 2003, I decided to do something similar on stage at the Somerville Theatre. It was a snowy Saturday, and we look back at it with fond memories because we pulled it off—and the crowd loved it.

Q A

What role do you play in the stage production? There’s an Irish expression, Fear an Tí, which means “the man of the house,” or master of ceremonies. And that’s what I am. I strive to create an atmosphere that feels to the audience as if we’re welcoming them into our home, or as if we’re together at a neighborhood pub. We sing and tell stories about times past. The great thing about the time of year is that it gives people permission to be sentimental. Outside the holiday season, sentimentality is often regarded as sappy, a little teary or schmaltzy. But at Christmastime, we can acknowledge the emotions attached to the season and allow ourselves to go with them.

Q A

How do you choose the performers?

As host of A Celtic Sojourn, I’ve been immer sed in traditional Celtic music for more than 25 years and have a deep well of knowledge upon

and a singer—but in the background as well, helping to create a family atmosphere backstage.

Q A

Where does your love of music come from? I grew up in a musical household…and in a musical culture. My family’s social activities were all based on music. It’s the same now when I go back to Ireland. My father is 90 years old and when we get together, he will sing. I’m a jack-ofall-trades, master of none. I sing and whistle, and play guitar and keyboard—just not at a very high level. But I enjoy sitting in and participating.

which to draw. I also travel a lot—here in this country and internationally—to see artists perform at various festivals and in other settings. I never hire anybody who I haven’t seen live— that’s an absolute rule. I’m convinced that not all recordings or YouTube videos reflect the ability of an artist to communicate with an audience.

Q A

What’s it like to see the show evolve into such a success? It’s very gratifying for me and for WGBH. The real gratification comes less from the show’s success, than from our creating this yearly tradition, this platform on which we can display the richness of this world. The artists that we’ve been able to get are spectacular, and the audience can trust that they’ll see top-notch, professional musicians. For my family, it’s become part of who we are on a yearly basis. It’s something we love doing.

Q A

How is your family involved?

My oldest daughter, Aoife, is a professional musician and she’s twice sung in the show. My youngest, Fionnuala, was in every show up to last year when she went off to college. She was a little nine-year-old who surprised the audience by coming out and singing a solo on that memorable night in 2003. My wife, Lindsay, is very much involved, not just on stage—she is a musician

Q A

How do you account for the current vitality of Celtic music? Young musicians the world over are playing Celtic music, including right here in Boston. Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory have amazing players going through. Creativity is soaring, because young artists are open to experimentation and less concerned about preserving a style of music.

Q A

Who is featured in this year’s A Christmas Celtic Sojourn? We’ve brought back some of our star performers. Solas plays at the contemporary edge of traditional music and they’re back with us. We consider them our house band; they’re absolutely terrific. We’ve got harpist Catriona McKay and fiddler Chris Stout from Scotland, a duo that’s blown the audience away in years past. Navan, who was there for our first show a decade ago, will be showcasing its unique four-part harmonies. We’ve got the amazing Alyth McCormack of Scotland, who frequently sings with The Chieftains. And brothers Jon and Nathan Pilatzke, along with Cara Butler, will be bringing Irish dance with a hint of Canada, picked up in the Ottawa Valley where they’re from. We can’t wait…it’s going to be a blast! To purchase tickets or to learn more about A Christmas Celtic Sojourn, visit wgbh.org/celtic. O’Donovan hosts A Celtic Sojourn Saturdays at 3pm on 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio.

89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio Your Take on Takeout

Sample some of Planet Takeout’s stories on the Menu section of its website, like those shown at left.

By Phil Redo, Managing Director 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio

Documentary producer Val Wang chose WGBH as her base of operations to tell the story of Chinese takeouts— those seemingly ubiquitous storefront restaurants that represent a cultural crossroads, bringing together Chinese immigrants and the local population, which in Boston includes many communities of color. I introduced her storytelling project Planet Takeout a few months ago in this space, and I wanted to update you on its progress. Since Planet Takeout launched, Val has presented the results to a live audience in WGBH’s One Guest Street studios, and contributed a half-dozen feature stories to 89.7. Her stories, which have been heard on both Morning Edition and All Things Considered, explored the economic, historical and social aspects of Chinese takeouts, the causes of tension that can exist within the staff, and the experiences from both sides of the counter. Recently, Val appeared on our midday talk program Boston Public Radio to discuss how her project has progressed and to share the stories she has collected from customers, including listeners of the show. Her reporting contemplates the following question: What is the ideal relationship between a small business and its surrounding neighborhood? Val told the story of a takeout that has a friendly but distant relationship to the community, and of another whose owner has become so involved he now coaches a local football team. We’ve learned that for some Chinese immigrant families, running a takeout is a way into American society. But it is grueling work with very long hours, and often the next generation wants no part of it. The project has been supported by online and social media components. The accompanying website (PlanetTakeout.org) is filled with interactive

maps, fortune cookie content, fascinating videos, all the radio stories and additional audio sound clips of takeout staff and customers. It has been a very interesting project that officially comes to a close in another month. But thanks to the Web and Val’s interest in continuing to document these neighborhood assets, we anticipate it will continue and that you will be able to hear updates on the radio.

The World’s Geo Quiz

Where in the World Is…

Test your grasp of geography with The World’s Geo Quiz: Situated in the Phillippines between the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea, this 300-mile island has a bio-diverse environment with several hundred species of butterflies. (But only one endemic species of bearded pig…) The main attraction: an underground river that flows through more than five miles of bat-filled limestone caves and subterranean lagoons, a spectacular formation that recently gained entry to what some are calling the new seven wonders of nature. The island was once known for its malaria and prison camps. Now a growing numbers of tourists who flock to see the river have brought the island pride and a little prosperity— and incentive to protect an ancient ecosystem. Where is this geological wonder? Find the answer on the bottom of page 25 or online where you can listen to a story about the river and view a slideshow at http://bit.ly/geo-river.

Classical New England A New Era of BSO Broadcasts

There may not yet be a new music director in place, but the Boston Symphony Orchestra and its six-decade-long broadcast partner Classical New England are rolling into a new season with a decidedly forward-looking sound in Symphony Hall, both on stage and in the broadcast booth “high above courtside.” Onstage, the BSO is welcoming five new musicians to its ranks for the 2012–2013 season, including Wesley Collins, viola; Michael Winter, third horn; James Markey, bass trombone; and percussionists Kyle Brightwell and Matthew McKay. And this month, the orchestra will feature two highly anticipated Symphony Hall debuts. Pianist Daniil Trifonov, fresh off his Chopin and Tchaikovsky competition victories, will perform Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the BSO on our November 10 broadcast. The following week, pianist (and Berklee College of Music alum) Kirill Gerstein makes his subscription debut with the BSO, performing both the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 1, as well as In Seven Days for piano and orchestra, by English composer/conductor Thomas Adès, who will be on the podium.

There are some exciting changes occurring in the broadcast booth as well! Afternoon host Cathy Fuller has teamed up with longtime host Ron Della Chiesa to provide a fresh sound to our live Saturday night broadcasts, as well as our new Thursday afternoon BSO Previews. “The rapport and good humor between Cathy and Ron during our Tanglewood Turnpike segments last summer was instant and impressive,” notes Classical New England managing director Benjamin Roe. “Cathy’s warm and companionable insights into the music world, combined with Ron’s six decades of experience as a veteran BSO (and Boston) observer, makes for a broadcast tandem second to none.” The new broadcast duo can be heard live every Saturday night starting at 7pm from Symphony Hall, with encore broadcasts on Sundays at 1pm that can also be heard on stations in Maine, Vermont, Connecticut and upstate New York. It’s the latest in a string of initiatives between WGBH and the BSO, which includes the BSO Concert Channel, a new, high-bitrate online audio channel, featuring a 24/7 stream of Boston Symphony Orchestra concert broadcasts. The channel is the first in the nation to offer a continuous, high-quality audio stream of live concerts by one of the world’s great orchestras.

Weekend Schedule Update

The new BSO duo of Cathy Fuller and Ron Della Chiesa is just one of many recent changes Classical New England has made to its weekend schedule. Since late September, Ray Brown has been your Saturday morning alarm clock, waking up Greater Boston with his blend of great music and fascinating stories it as only he can do. Saturday afternoons now belong to Music Director Cheryl Willoughby, who says of her new job, “Sharing great music with other people is a pure pleasure, not work.” Cheryl’s 12noon–5pm shift is now followed by Live from Fraser, Classical New England’s signature program of the region’s—and occasionally, the world’s!—finest classical artists performing in WGBH’s studios at Guest Street in Brighton. In addition, From the Top (produced just down the road at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall), now can be heard on Sunday mornings at 11am. Tune in to hear the energy of America’s next great classical musicians, with the ever-engaging host and pianist Christopher O’Riley.

WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station Combatting the Cape’s ‘Tiny Predators’ By Mindy Todd WCAI’s Managing Director for Editorial and Host

This summer WCAI senior reporter Sean Corcoran looked at the ecology of the tick— how it survives, travels and gets under our skin—in his five-part series, “Tiny Predators: Facing Cape Cod’s Tick Problem.” Sean’s reporting was so compelling that we decided to present the series in its entirety in a special edition of our public affairs program The Point on Tuesday, November 13. WCAI reporter Sean Corcoran suits up “It’s easy with topics like this one to play for his story on tick ecology. on people’s fears and generate interest that way. But that’s not what I wanted to do,” Sean says. “My goal was to provide solid, science-based information about the ecology behind how ticks live, so we can take steps to protect ourselves.” There is growing awareness about the dangers of Lyme disease, and fall is the time of year we need to be particularly vigilant in checking for the tiny black-legged tick (commonly called the deer tick) because, as Sean points out, the adult tick is it twice as likely to carry Lyme disease because it has already fed twice.

“This is not a Lyme disease series, per se, it’s a fact-based tick series,” he says. “We’re trying to cut through some of the myth and hyperbole that surround ticks and really get to the ecology and the interactions in nature that lead to disease.” The series highlights the most-recent innovations in the fight against ticks, both chemical and biological control methods. We learn that the number of acorns in the woods has more impact on disease-carrying ticks than the number of deer. And a researcher in Saskatchewan, Canada, talks about the sudden arrival of tick-borne disease there—a region that never before had black-legged ticks. “Because of the great sources who assisted me, the series goes in surprising directions,” Sean says. “We learn about guinea hens, horses and migrating birds. We talk to researchers, both in the field and in the lab. And the result is a series of stories that really give people new information.” Rick Ostfeld, a senior scientist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in New York who was interviewed for the series, was delighted with the end result. “It’s excellent,” he writes, “and refreshingly different from the personal, anecdotal, and often non-scientific coverage that dominates so much of the Lyme disease world.”
