Cooking legend and cultural icon Julia Child introduced French cuisine to American kitchens in 1963 with WGBH’s pioneering series, The French Chef. She was passionate, capable and approachable…and she changed the way Americans cook, eat and think about food. This month would have been Julia’s 100th birthday, and we’re celebrating in a big way: with a special collection of three episodes of The French Chef that we’re airing for the first time since 1963…with a PBS retrospective featuring iconic moments from the series along with reflections by some of the many chefs whose careers Julia helped shape…and with some of our own favorite recollections (page 10). By now, most people are familiar with the story of Julia’s apprenticeship at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and her 10-year collaboration with Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle to write a cookbook aimed at an American audience. Mastering the Art of French Cooking was published in 1961. That might have been the end of the story if not for our invitation to this tall and talented Cambridge neighbor to appear on a local WGBH book review program called I’ve Been Reading. Julia arrived with a hot plate, a giant whisk and eggs. She made an omelet and a lasting impression on everyone who tuned in. Soon after, WGBH tapped a talented young producer, Russ Morash, to create three pilot shows. The French Chef was an instant hit and Julia became public television’s first and most enduring star, with multiple, award-winning series over the course of nearly 40 years. Above all, Julia was an inspiring teacher. Never afraid to make mistakes on camera, she used them to her advantage to show her viewers how to adapt with confidence. And adapt she did. In a tribute to Julia, Russ recalled the time a freight elevator bell went off in the middle of a taping session. “Back in those days, we had to continue recording and Julia knew this,” he says. “She calmly apologized to the viewers for the interruption— ‘Oh, that must be the plumber…it’s about time he got here!’” Our celebration of Julia will continue next month with The Taste of WGBH Food & Wine Festival at our WGBH studios, Thursday through Saturday, 9/13 to 9/15. This ticketed festival includes an opening gala, chef demonstrations, educational seminars, artisanal tastings, a wine auction and more (page 2). Classical Cartoon Festival
WGBH Food & Wine Festival
Work up an appetite for WGBH’s first food and wine festival, coming to our Brighton Studios Thu, 9/13 to Sat, 9/15. The Taste of WGBH: Food & Wine Festival will feature over 100 wines, local chefs, restaurants, and local artisanal foods and produce. The festivities open Thursday night with The Gala Reception featuring 20 of Boston’s top chefs perfectly paired with a selected winery. Chefs include Ming Tsai from Blue Ginger, Robert Sisca from Bistro du Midi, Barbara Lynch from No. 9 Park, Jody Adams from Rialto, Lydia Shire from Scampo, Jasper White from Summer Shack and more. The Friday night wine auction offers guests the chance to bid on rare and unique wines, with Christie’s Wine Specialist, Charles Antin, while enjoying Moët Hennessy Champagne and wines, and specialty dishes. On Saturday, guests can experience The Artisan Taste, featuring hundreds of wines, local artisanal food, and chef demonstrations. Great Performances/Jackie Evancho: Music of the Movies
Jackie Evancho first knew she wanted to perform when she saw The Phantom of the Opera. Three years later, undeterred by two failed tryouts, she landed a spot on America’s Got Talent after viewers voted her into an audience-nominated spot based on her YouTube audition. She went on to finish second. She was 10 years old. Life hasn’t been the same since. The year she appeared on America’s Got Talent, her major label debut album, O Holy Night, became the year’s number one best-selling debut recording. Less than a year later, she dazzled viewers with her first Great Performances solo concert from the spectacular Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida. Now she’s back on PBS in a new Great Performances special showcasing great songs from the silver screen, recorded in the movie palace splendor of the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles. Evancho puts her own unique stamp on such audience favorites as “My Heart Will Go On” (Titanic), “Some Enchanted Evening” (South Pacific), “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” (The Lion King), “Pure Imagination” (Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory), “When She Loved Me” (Toy Story 2) and many more. Evancho’s voice has been described as angelic and heavenly, and she’s been praised for her technical precision and range. “Her remarkable sense of pitch is one of the many things that makes Evancho’s talent so exciting to audiences,” The Los Angeles Times observes. From the team of comedians who brought you ADD & Loving It!?! comes a sequel that makes clear there is much that can be done not just to manage adult ADD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), but to turn it into an advantage. Experts explain the neurology and psychology of the disorder and provide 36 practical tips for managing the condition in the areas where adults struggle most: organization, time management, prioritizing, motivation and handling big projects.
Peg & Neil Young’s Concert for the Bridge School For 25 years, musician Neil Young and his wife, Pegi, have organized the annual Bridge School Benefit Concert, an all-acoustic event featuring some of the greatest names in music. This PBS special features rousing performances from past concerts by artists including Bruce Springsteen (“Born in the USA”), Pearl Jam (“Better Man”), David Bowie (“Heroes”), Emmylou Harris (“Love Hurts”), Simon & Garfunkel (“America”) and Neil Young (“Crime in the City”).

Celebrating the Music of Johnny Cash: We Walk the Line! Johnny Cash helped define country music with his songs like “Walk the Line,” “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Long Black Veil” that gave voice to the poor and downtrodden. Nearly 60 years after his booming notes first hit the airwaves, and almost 10 years since his death, this PBS special honors Cash’s legacy like never before with a concert of his hits sung by Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Sheryl Crow, Shooter Jennings and Shelby Lynne.
Doo Wop Love Songs (My Music)
Doo Wop’s biggest and best hits are back, assembled into an all-new collection featuring the most romantic teenage love songs. In honor of what would have been Julia Child’s 100th birthday, we offer you a special collection of three original black-and-white episodes of WGBH’s The French Chef from the 1960s that bring quintessential Julia back into your home. One of Julia’s earliest episodes, French Onion Soup, teaches us how to make the classic soup from scratch (including the French version with a poached egg) as well as how to disguise the flavor of a store-bought version. In Quiche Lorraine, Julia extols the virtues of using your hands during cooking, explains the differences among kinds of flour, and demonstrates the fine art of making the perfect pie crust. In Chocolate Mousse, Julia presents us with the no-nonsense cooking secrets behind “mousseline au chocolat” served two ways: in individual glasses chilled in an “icebox” or frozen in a ring mold with homemade whipped cream spooned into the center. We also re-enter Julia’s kitchen this month with a retrospective that includes some of the most memorable episodes from her classic cooking series and Saturday afternoon marathons of some of our favorite shows. Two weeks after the Olympics, in the same stadiums and on the same tracks, a new set of athletes will take center stage in London. The Paralympic Games will feature more than 4,200 athletes with physical disabilities from 165 countries, competing in archery, rowing, cycling, wheelchair fencing, sitting volleyball, wheelchair tennis and more. WGBH’s new Web series, Medal Quest: American Athletes and the Paralympic Games, explores what it takes to be a champion, with exclusive online videos, profiles and blogs featuring top US athletes, including “wounded warrior” athletes from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Follow them on Medal Quest now as they train and, beginning August 29, as they compete in the 2012 Games. Radio Spotlight On Air with Alan McLellan Classical New England’s Alan McLellan’s first job in radio was as an engineer for the Canadian Broadcasting Company in 1980. He spent the majority of the next three-plus decades behind the scenes, arriving at WGBH in 2000 to help produce our radio station broadcasts of live performances. But this past fall, he stepped into the weekday spotlight, debuting on Classical New England as host of Classical Music with Alan McLellan, which includes the popular noontime Café Europa segment. WGBH’s Matt Roy spoke with McLellan about his background and the recent turn his career has taken.

Can you provide an example of this approach? I recently presented a string quartet of Beethoven and I introduced it with a story about him and the year he produced this particular piece. He was sick with an intestinal ailment and got better by following his doctor’s advice and going off to a spa not far from Vienna. He recuperated and it must have been a wonderful recovery for him, because he wrote this amazing portion of the string quartet called the “Holy Song of Thanksgiving.” It’s this beautiful, slow movement that is an outpouring of thanks for his recovery.

I sing with the Cantata Singers. It’s a really fun musical outlet. I also sing in a church choir. Both let me dip back into the experience of making music, which I think is vital for people. Forget about August being a quiet, sleepy month: with 14 broadcasts and a brand-new audio channel on the agenda, we intend for Classical New England’s coverage of the 75th-anniversary season of Tanglewood concerts to live up to the adjectival definition of the word august: “grand, majestic and awe-inspiring.” Certainly some august figures from the world of music will be prowling the Tanglewood grounds this month, including conductors Lorin Maazel, Christoph von Dohnányi, Leonard Slatkin and Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos, not to mention such soloists as Gil Shaham, Pinchas Zukerman, Yo-Yo Ma and Jean-Yves Thibaudet. Tue, 8/7: Tanglewood on Parade The annual open house day on the festival grounds translates into an evening with three orchestras (the Boston Symphony, the Boston Pops and the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra) and a parade of five—count ’em, five—conductors showing their stuff. Sat, 8/11: Yo-Yo Ma Plays Elgar The world’s greatest cellist is the soloist in Edward Elgar’s magnificent Cello Concerto, led by French conductor Stephan Deneve. Deneve also leads the BSO in the Symphony No. 5 by Dmitri Shostakovich and the world premiere of André Previn’s Music for Boston. Sat, 8/18: John Williams 80th-Birthday Concert Renowned musical guests, including Jessye Norman and Yo-Yo Ma, join the Pops in a spectacular evening of some of Williams’ most popular works for film and the concert stage, with some very special surprises in store. Sun, 8/26: Harbison and Beethoven In addition to the now-traditional season-ending performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with soloists and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, you’ll also hear the world premiere of another BSO commission for the 75th-anniversary season: Koussevitzky said, for chorus and orchestra, by John Harbison.

Impressions of Debussy

By Cheryl Willoughby Classical New England Music Director Claude Debussy once said, “Music is the expression of the movement of the waters, the play of curves described by changing breezes.” This wasn’t merely an offhand musing by the composer, born 150 years ago this month in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France. Rather it describes the very essence of Debussy’s creative approach. You can actually hear dapples of sunlight bouncing about on the surface of rippling waves in his Jeux de Vagues (Dance of the Waves) from his masterpiece La Mer (The Sea). And there simply is no other music that so effectively illuminates the shifting, eerily muted soundscape of an underwater scene that Debussy captured in La Cathédral Englutie (The Sunken Cathedral). Small wonder that Debussy was called an Impressionist composer, as much as he may have disliked the label. The latter piece is for solo piano; La Mer, of course, is one of the towering works of orchestral music of the 20th century. Which points to the completeness of Debussy’s unique voice as a composer: No matter the instrumentation, in each composition Debussy creates a fully formed sound world with its own internal laws of physics, structure and harmonics. And the results are invariably ear-catching. As Classical New England joins the rest of the world in celebrating Claude Debussy’s 150th birthday this month, we wanted to give you a chance to hear his music in a way that he never did: on a selection of marvelous recordings, in many different interpretations from a top selection of performers and ensembles. As Debussy had his own interpretation of the Mediterranean Sea for La Mer, so too will you have your own personal experience of which Debussy works move you. We’ve assembled some of our favorite Debussy recordings at right, which we hope will be a springboard for you to explore the recorded output of the masterful French composer.

With creative conversation in a now seamless two-hour block, and a new partnership with the award-winning Marketplace, we’re providing a greater choice of high-quality programs from morning through night. At a time when all things economic are central to our daily lives, we are proud to be offering more of Marketplace, public radio’s premier business program, with its intelligent and in-depth approach to economic issues and trends. Marketplace’s reporting now appears throughout the day: Marketplace Morning Report, a look at business and economic news with a glance ahead at the day’s headlines, airs throughout WGBH’s Morning Edition; WCAI alumnus Jeremy Hobson hosts. Marketplace, Kai Ryssdal’s iconic 30-minute business news program, makes its mark at 6pm. Marketplace Tech Report, an exploration of technology’s influence on our world with host John Moe, airs during All Things Considered.

With these shifts, WGBH jazz programming moves to the weekend. Legendary host Eric Jackson, the dean of Boston jazz, presides Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings from 9pm–midnight. Eric in the Evening will continue to showcase local jazz artists and Kai Ryssdal venues and provide a wider stage for this important musical genre that has been a part of WGBH’s lineup for four decades. As part of these changes, Steve Schwartz is leaving WGBH after 27 years. Steve is a jazz radio legend in his own right—and along with his many fans, all of us at WGBH thank him for his many contributions.

This young singer/songwriter from Glasgow has been raising eyebrows for many years. In addition to traditional Scottish material, Polwart has written some hard-hitting songs with themes that range from child abuse to the massacre at Srebrenica. historic boats, welding giant, fantasy video-game style swords or taking an invention from dream to reality.” Morris says it has been interesting to discover how many unique ways people are funneling their creative energies. “My favorite interview so far was with pianist Jacqueline Schwab, mainly because I’ve been a fan of hers for so long. It was wonderful to get so many insights on how her creative process works, and the path she took to get where she is today,” he says. “I also enjoyed talking to Robert Rindler from Wellfleet, who makes art out of plastic scraps that most people discard at the dump.” Living at lands’ end inspires the imagination, according to WCAI founder Jay Allison, who edits the series. He says it’s not just about the arts, but the creative ways people live their lives on the Cape, Islands and South Coast. “For most of us, it takes a certain amount of creativity to stitch together a living down here,” Allison says. “Our series looks at the remarkable things people do, not only to enhance their lives, but to survive.”
