8 | HEART OF THE FINGER LAKES

Watkins Glen is synonymous with autoracing, earning a place in the history books in October 1948 when the first post-World War II road race in America ran through the village streets, around the spectacular gorge in Watkins Glen State Park, and over surrounding farmland.

Conceived by Cameron R. Argetsinger (1921-2008), a racing enthusiast from Youngstown, Ohio who summered on Seneca Lake, the event attempted to bring the excitement and prestige of European road racing from across the Atlantic. It marked the dawn of American sports car racing and featured an eclectic mix of race cars. Watkins Glen continued to host the Grand Prix on village streets

and country roads from 1948 to 1955, until the first permanent circuit, now known as Watkins Glen International, was constructed in 1956.

Located just 4 miles from downtown Watkins Glen, racing enthusiasts can experience NASCAR, IMSA (International Motor Sports Association), and SVRA (Sportscar Vintage Racing Association) racing, along with many more events, at the famed Watkins Glen International. Thanks to the Drive the Glen experience, fans can test the power under their own vehicle’s hood when they take on the track themselves! For adrenalinepumping fun available anytime, visitors

can recreate Watkins Glen’s historic road race by following the village streets and country roads of the historic Grand Prix Race Course.

For the full story behind racing in Watkins Glen and the vast field of motorsports, stop by the International Motor Racing Research Center in downtown Watkins Glen. (610 S. Decatur St., Watkins Glen)

GREEN FLAG

Race has started! Or a hazard has been cleared up and cars are returned to racing after Yellow flag.

RED FLAG

Means the race must immediately come to a halt. Cars must either stop where they are at on the track, or are brought to pit road due either to extensive on-track debris that must be cleaned up following a crash, or when weather forces racing to stop.

1952 Start/Finish

BLACK FLAG

Typically is directed toward a particular driver who NASCAR officials or scorers have determined has committed an on-track offense and must leave the racing surface and return to the pit area immediately.

WHITE FLAG

Indicates there is just one lap remaining in the race. If a caution period occurs on the final lap while the white flag is displayed, the field is frozen and the event ends immediately.

YELLOW FLAG

Indicates danger ahead and passing is prohibited. A “standing” yellow flag equals 70% of race speed; a “waving” yellow flag means equals 40% of race speed.

CHECKERED FLAG

The race is over when this flag flies. Each car remaining on the track must cross the start-finish line and pass under the checkered flag to have its finishing position officially scored. The checkered flag is also used at the end of each driver’s qualifying attempt.

Seneca Lake is the largest of the glacial Finger Lakes and is also the deepest lake that is contained entirely within the state. It is this vast volume of water that contributes to our terroir which is ideal for growing grapes, given the lake helps blunt extreme low and high, temperatures year-round. In 1866, the western shores of Seneca Lake became home to its first winery, the Seneca Lake Grape Wine Company, The winery planted 100 acres of grapes. By 1869, they were producing 14,000 gallons of Seneca Lake’s first commercial wine. Our wineries pride themselves on both the diversity of wines, as well as the many different styles of tasting rooms positioned all around Seneca Lake. Today, the Seneca Lake Wine Trail is one of the largest cohesive wine trails in North America. Our wines are grown here. Made here.
