We are passionate about preparing our learners for the real world of work; careers advice is so embedded in our culture that it forms part of our lesson plans.

Why do students go to college: to learn or to have fun? Here at Waltham Forest College we do our best to ensure that you do both. We recognise that students achieve beer when they enjoy what they are learning. This is why we consider it so important that the course you choose is the right one for you. Right from the start, one of our trained Advisors will discuss with you what your interests are and where you want to go in life. They will find out if you are the hands-on practical type of learner or if you prefer to research your subject in depth.

As part of our commitment to improving the College experience of our students we have invested over £3.3m in the first phase of the ‘Heart of The College’ initiative. This project involved the creation of exciting multifunctional study and leisure areas. A further £4.9m will be used for the second improvement phase, which will be progressed over the next year in readiness for September 2013, bringing further benefits to our students. Your learning experience will be enhanced by the wide choice of extra leisure and recreational activities on offer. Whether you are interested in sport, music, dance, drama or volunteering, there is an activity here for you. We recognise how important these activities are, not just in adding to the fun of coming to College but also in building confidence, self-respect and respect for others. They likewise help to develop the teamwork and leadership skills that are so important in life.

BODY REPAIR SPECIALIST AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEER MECHANICAL ENGINEER CAR DEALERSHIP MANAGER

TOMAS MURRAY Diploma in Motorcycle Maintenance and Repair Level 3 I chose this course because I want to work with motorbikes and heard that this was one of the best courses in motor vehicle engineering; I haven’t been disappointed. I’ve picked up lots of new skills such as wiring, using the right tools and engine mechanics. My favourite part of the course has definitely been able to work in the workshops. I eventually want to work as a pit stop mechanic for Formula 1.

I now have my first full-time Job working at a really nice local day-care nursery.

CHRISTIAN VULPE ESOL I have improved my language with the help of my teachers and am now able to study further in the subject I want, which is Business Studies. The reason I chose this college was because they achieve great results on their ESOL courses and this I can see in the level of help we get while on the course.

HAIRDRESSING BEAUTY THERAPY

If you enjoy being creative and like working with people then you’ll enjoy a career in the hairdressing or the beauty therapy industry. We offer a range of courses with the staff and facilities to equip you with the skills to get one of the many jobs available in these fields. Our brand new industry standard Elite Hair and Beauty Salons will ensure that you gain commercial experience, as they provide an in-demand service to the general public.

BEAUTY THERAPIST IMAGE CONSULTANT MAKE-UP ARTIST

Our students regularly take part in hair and beauty exhibitions and events such as the annual Total Look Hair and Beauty Competition.

NAIL TECHNICIAN HAIR STYLIST

zAREE MOHAMMED Hairdressing and Beauty Employer: Inner Beauty Ltd I was at Waltham Forest College for 3 years, and worked my way up from a Level 2 course in Hair and Beauty, to Level 3 in Photographic Make-Up and Level 3 Beauty. The skills I learnt at College, gave me the skills I needed for employment, such as waxing, facials and body massages among others. I am now working at Inner Beauty, a beauty salon in Ilford, where my manager has actually set up a small hair studio, so I can work on client’s hair – this is new to the salon. Before I started the salon only offered beauty treatments. The College has excellent links with hair and beauty salons, which definitely helped secure my employment.

MAMADU DJALO Public Services BTEC National Extended Diploma Level 3 I chose this course so that I could learn about the government and its different sectors. Waltham Forest College looked like a good college when I visited it, so decided this was the best place for my course. The course has offered me a variety of opportunities to enjoy sports, study visits and learn the discipline and knowledge required for a career in Public Services. The Public Services department and teachers are really exciting and have provided me with all the support and guidance needed to get qualified and now go onto university.

64

There has perhaps never been a more exciting time to pursue a career in the sports and leisure industry. Waltham Forest College offers courses that enable our students to make the most of this exciting opportunity. You will learn about different aspects of the sports industry, from fitness training and performance programmes to the organisation and development of sport.

FITNESS INSTRUCTOR SPORTS COACH PHYSIOTHERAPY

JADE JEFFRIES BTEC Sport and Community Sports Coaching Level 2 The course has been fantastic. I’ve learnt about the rules and regulations of different sporting events, including football and basketball, as well as learning about the human anatomy and how different injuries occur. I’ve also now completed a FA Level 1 course, which means I can coach a football team – this is a great achievement, especially as I didn’t initially like football! As well as this I’ve also completed training in First Aid and Child Protection. I eventually hope to join the Army or the Police Force.

THAMILARASI KETHEESWARAN BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Travel and Tourism I have always wanted to study Travel and Tourism and find it fun! The College offered a good choice of courses, especially as I had no GCSEs. I was able to start at a basic level and work my way up into Airport Management. My teachers have helped alleviate any doubts and provide workshops on the weekends to help with any problem areas. The facilities offered by the College are great, especially since the development of the LRC, including the new cafeteria, the various enrichment activities.

HIGHER EDUCATION

Waltham Forest College has a range of HE-level courses to suit your needs. All of our courses will help you to progress and give you opportunities for beer jobs and more pay.

72

Many people choose not to go to university either because of the high fees involved or perhaps because they haven't studied for many years or have family commitments which prevent them leaving their communities. We offer highly supportive programmes at competitive prices, which considerably reduces the cost of gaining a full Bachelor’s Degree. Our teaching groups are oen smaller than universities so we are able to give you more individual aention if you should need it and, more importantly, we try to provide a timetable to suit your needs. We offer a range of vocationally based HNCs and HNDs; keeping your options open to either progress on to university to complete an Honours Degree programme or to go directly into employment. Students can apply for a student loan from the Student Loan LINDA ESSANDOH Company. HNC Business Management I would definitely recommend this course to other people, as it has opened many doors for me. The modules have ranged from law to marketing and HR. The teachers have all been very supportive and helped me to achieve to the best of my ability. There are many amenities for students, which definitely made working here much easier. I will be going on to study Law at university.
