Weyburn Comp athletes compete at SE regional meet

Weyburn football player named to Team Canada for Women’s World Championship Football player Chantal Vogel of Weyburn has been named to Football Canada’s national team to compete in Finland at the IFAF Women’s World Championship this summer. “I made Team Canada! I will be representing my country at the highest level of women’s football in Finland this summer,” she announced on her Facebook page. Chantal is in her first year with the Calgary Rage, and said in an interview, “I am so beyond excited to be going. This is an opportunity that I’m lucky to have, and shows just how much the sport of women’s foot-

ball has grown. Regardless of the outcome, I am using this as an opportunity to play against the best women in football from around the world, and to experience some of the best coaching in Canada.” National Team Identification Camps began on May 6, with 136 athletes fighting for a spot on the Team Canada roster. The 136-woman roster was then reduced to 81 as each athlete fought for their position on Team Canada’s final roster. These 81 athletes then competed in the Red White Game to close out the weekend in Ottawa. The final top 45 play-

ers were chosen for Team in Vantaa, Finland from Canada, with Vogel to play July 28 to August 8. on the defensive line. She has been playing for the Calgary Rage, and has been playing football now for 12 years. Team Canada will compete in the tournament along with defending champions Team USA, as well as teams from Finl a n d , M ex i c o , Sweden, Australia, Germany and Great Britain. The Weyburn Comprehensive School hosted the southeast regional track and field meet on Wednesday at the WCS track field. The following are the aggregate winners who will advance on to the district track meet, to be hosted at the Weyburn Comp track field on Wednesday, May 25. Markus Paquet, 40 points; Assiya Benabdallah, 32 points; Amryn King, 40 points; Conner Kerr, 36 points; and Jyler Goebel, 36 Points. Assiniboia Park had two aggregate winners, Sophie Pollock, with 34 points, and Matthew Nimegeers with 38 points. These were the athletes from Grades 9-12 who competed from the Weyburn Comp and placed top four in their category to advance to Districts. There were athletes in Grades 6-8 who also competed, but they will not advance to districts. U18 AA Beavers undefeated at tournament The Weyburn U18 AA Beavers had a perfect 4-0 record on Saturday and Sunday, recording decisive wins against four different teams. On Saturday, they won 10-0 over the Saskatoon Athletics, and 14-3 over the Saskatoon Blue Jays. They went on to defeat the Muenster Red Sox 163 on Sunday, followed by a win over the Prince Albert Royals by a score of 16-2. In the win over the Ath-

letics, Keaton Husband was on the mound for six innings, garnering eight strike-outs and throwing 16 first-pitch strikes. Dallen Oxelgren and Noah Kopec each had two hits, with Oxelgren getting two RBIs along with Wyatt Godlonton, and Sam Mallory had one RBI. In the evening game versus the Blue Jays, Ryker Watt was on the mound for five innings and he notched 13 strike-outs and nine

first-pitch strikes, and Vlad Szczecinski was on for relief for one inning. Watt also had two hits along with Szczecinski and Godlonton, while Mallory and Watt both had four RBIs, and Seth Deis had two. Karston Geiger was on the mound for five innings in the win over the Red Sox on Sunday, and he recorded seven strike-outs and threw 13 first-pitch strikes. Watt and Deis both had

three hits, and Mallory, Godlonton and Kopec all had two RBIs each. For the game against the Royals on Sunday afternoon, Mallory was on the mound for five innings and he recorded seven strikeouts and 15 first-pitch strikes. He also had three hits, along with Godlonton, and Watt had two, with Mallory getting four RBIs, and Watt and Oxelgren each had two.

Iron Pigs players had fist bumps for Will Morris, centre, after he rounded the bases for a two-run home run early in their game versus the Regina Rockies on Wednesday evening at Tom Laing Park. This was their season opener, and the Iron Pigs earned the win by the score of 11-1.

The Weyburn Iron Pigs began their 2022 season with a home game against the Regina Rockies, winning 11-1 on 14 hits and 11 runs over five innings. The game was held at Tom Laing Park in Weyburn, and had a late start as the players waited for the umpire to arrive. The Iron Pigs opened with three runs in the first inning, and four runs in the second and in the third innings. The offence included a two-run home run by Will Morris in the first inning over the centre field fence. Ethan Orsted was on the mound for four of the five innings, allowing six hits, one run and getting two

strike-outs. Eric Evans came on in relief for the last inning, getting one strike-out. The next home game for the Iron Pigs will be on Thursday, May 26 versus the Regina Ghosts, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Tom Laing Park. This will be followed by a game on Friday, June 3 versus the Regina Dodgers, also at 7:30 p.m., before a series of road games. Weyburn will visit the Moose Jaw Padres on June 7, with the first pitch at 7 p.m., followed a game on June 10 versus the Ghosts at 8:45 p.m. at Currie Field, and on June 17 at Currie Field versus the Rockies, again at 8:45 p.m.
