Making a save on a former team-mate

Red Wings drop two games, hold successful fundraiser shootout The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings lost a pair of home games over the weekend, losing to Notre Dame 8-3 on Friday and then to Flin Flon Bombers 6-0 on Saturday night. Following the game against Flin Flon, the Red Wings held a successful fundraiser Calcutta shootout event, raising money for the Red Wings Education Fund, a total of $4,600. Half of the money raised went to the fund to help players who pursue post-secondary education after their junior hockey career, and the other half was split between the top three winners. The top winners were goaltender Jackson Fellner in first place, Matthew Reidy in second and Ethan Clements in third. In the game held before the shootout, the Red Wings ran into penalty trouble, with four of the six goals scored on the powerplay, including the first goal while Weyburn was down two men. Fellner was in net until

after the fourth goal was scored in the second period, making 16 saves on 20 shots. Dazza Mitchell was in net for the balance of the game, and made 16 saves on 18 shots. In the game against the Hounds, Weyburn’s Davis Chorney got the Red Wings on the scoreboard first, with an assist from Austyn Hansen. Kirk Mullen of the Red Wings scored in the second to give the Wings a 2-0 lead, assisted by Mitch Wilkie and Mi-Kwan Tallman. The Hounds then score four unanswered goals that period, and added four more in the third period before the Red Wings scored one more, Ty Mason from Simon Pollock and Ethan Whillans. Weyburn will host the Melville Millionaires on Tuesday night at Crescent Point Place at 7:30 p.m., then will travel for the return game in Melville on Friday, Feb. 11. The Red Wings will then host the Kindersley Klippers on Saturday, Feb. 12.

Weyburn product Bailee Bourassa honoured by Huskies Weyburn product and former Weyburn Gold Wings player Bailee Bourassa was honoured at the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s hockey game on Saturday night in Saskatoon. In what was the final home game of the regularseason, Bourassa — the team’s lone fifth-year player — was honoured for her contributions to the program. Bourassa stands at fivefoot-eight and has been a part of the program since 2016. She sits sixth in goals and 11th in points in the Huskies all-time history books. In her final year of eligibility, she’s completing her Masters in Nursing and working full-time, all while wearing the ‘C’. She was honoured before Saturday night’s game.

Red Wings player Jackson Ferry put the puck in the top shelf as he shot on goalie Ryan Hicks, during the Red Wings’ Calcutta shootout fundraiser on Saturday night. The shootout was held to raise money for the Red Wings Education Fund, to help players moving on to post-secondary education.

Wheat Kings split weekend games in Big 6 action The Yellow Grass Wheat Kings posted a win and a loss over the weekend and are currently in third place in the Big Six Hockey League standings. Midale did not play in this past week. They lost 7-3 to Moosomin on Friday, and won 106 over Wawota on Saturday. In the loss, the Wheat Kings goals were by Rhett Nikolejsin from Luke Niemegeers; Tucker Neuber-

ger from Mike Onstad; and Burke Johnstone from Zak Hicks and Neuberger. In the win, Hicks notched a hattrick, and Mike Onstad posted five assists and a goal. Hicks was first on the board from Rhett Labbie and Kyle Crozier, followed by Zach Douglas from Onstad. In the second period, Hicks got his second goal from Douglas and Onstad.

Kyle Mryglod scored from Reid Paterson, and Niemegeers scored on an assist by Mryglod. Mryglod got his second goal with assists to Paterson and Douglas, and Hicks reached his hattrick with assists to Onstad and Douglas. Nikolejsin scored from Onstad and Hicks, and scored again from Onstad and Johnstone. The final goal was by Onstad from Nikolejsin and Johnstone.

The Wheat Kings goalie, Nate Ferris, is second in the league with a record of 5-20 and a 3.11 goals-against average. The final games of the regular season will go this weekend, with Oxbow at Yellow Grass on Friday, Feb. 11 at 8 p.m., and Midale is at Redvers at 8 p.m. Redvers will then be at Midale on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 8:30 p.m.

Huskies head coach Steve Kook offered this comment on the significance of Bourassa to the team. “She’s a full-time working nurse, she’s taking her master’s, and she’s an elite athlete. A lot of people can’t even handle one of those things. The fact that she’s doing three of them at the same time, while being our captain and leading all this sort on and taken on what she did with the cancer game — I think that she deserves that night.” She was named the Huskies Rookie of the Year in 2017, and was an all-academic award recipient the same year. As a Gold Wing, she was on the national champion Esso Cup team in 2014, and was named to the league allstar team in 2016.

Jumping for the rebound

WCS Eagles player Thomas Olson jumped high as he grabbed the rebound from a scoring attempt by Oxbow, during a tournament game on Saturday afternoon in the Eagle gym.The intermediate boys were able to pull together a mini-tournament at the last moment, and played Oxbow twice, beating them by scores of 83-38 and 72-35.

Weyburn int. boys sweep basketball games The Weyburn Comp Eagles intermediate boys held a small home basketball tournament on Friday and Saturday. The tournament was held on short notice at the WCS Eagle gym, and included a couple of games

with the Comp Eagles senior girls basketball team as well. The intermediate boys played twice on Friday and twice on Saturday, winning all four matches handily. On Friday, the Eagles beat Oxbow by the score

of 83-38, and then defeated Stoughton 88-53. On Saturday, Weyburn beat Radville by 68-45, and played Oxbow a second time, defeating them 72-35. The historic McLeod Series, which pits the senior boys

and girls basketball teams from Weyburn and Estevan in a home-and-home series, began on Tuesday evening, past press deadlines for the Review, and the Estevan portion of the games will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 16.
